How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Straight Stitch and Featherweight sewing machine tune-up service includes a thorough cleaning by removal of all thread, dust and debris, and lubrication of all bushings, gears, pullies and bearings. Additional Tune-up details: Your sewing machine is cleaned, with all debris, dust and threads removed.
Top thread tension is controlled by a dial on the machine`s thread path. So make sure the thread sits correctly between the tension discs when you`re threading your machine. If it doesn`t, then the machine won`t be able to sew properly.
A: Looping on the underside, or back of the fabric, means the top tension is too loose compared to the bobbin tension, so the bobbin thread is pulling too much top thread underneath. By tightening the top tension, the loops will stop, but the added tension may cause breakage, especially with sensitive threads.
You should see a small screw on the flat/closed side of the bobbin case. Turning the screw a tiny bit counterclockwise will loosen the bobbin tension; turning it clockwise will tighten the tension.
If you need to tighten the thread, turn the dial to a lower number, or make a clockwise turn with the knob. If you need to lower the tension in the thread, turn the dial to a higher number. If you still need to adjust the thread, use a very small screwdriver to turn the screw on the side of the bobbin case.
How often should I have my machine serviced? That depends on how much you use your machine and how well you take care of it. If you sew 2-3 hours every day you should probably have it looked at twice a year. If you sew 5-8 hours a week, your should have it serviced once a year.
Yes, oil is needed on a sewing machine to keep it running smoothly and quietly. It will last longer and stitch more evenly as internal parts move or rotate without friction, well far less friction.
There are two types of tension adjustments, a basic adjustment for everyday sewing (this is what your repair person does when adjusting tension, but you can do it, too) and a temporary adjustment, necessary when you change thread types or sizes, fabrics, and stitching operations.
Bobbin tensions should be 18 to 22 grams (up to 25 grams when embroidering caps). Proper tensions for satin stitches should reveal 1/3 bobbin and 2/3 top thread color on the underside of the embroidery as seen on the image above. A clean bobbin case is essential for proper tension settings.
A sewing machine, just like any other machine, needs some attention now and then to keep it functioning properly. Your vehicle needs an oil change and a tune-up every now and then; your sewing machine does too.

First, make sure the bobbin-winding spindle (located on top of your machine) has been pushed back to the left for sewing. If it is not in the correct position, the needle will not go down and pick-up your bobbin thread.

The last time I sewed with my Necchi the tension was fine. Today when I threaded my needle, the thread felt tight in the upper tension dial. I tried re-threading the machine several times, but it didn’t help. Now the parts of the tension dial are all loose and wobbbly and I have no upper tension. Doesn’t matter what the dial is set on. The tension dial appears to be broken, but I don’t know how that could have happend since I store it in a case.

Adjusting the knobs on the front of my Singer 9005
ANSWER : If the bottom thread is showing through, back off the tensioner, 1/2 number at a time.

Belt tension adjustment
ANSWER : If you are looking at the belt while the vacuum is in the upright and locked position, the belt will be loose. The idler removes tension so the brush doesn’t spin while you walk away and put heat marks in the carpet. Hit the lever that allows you to move the handle low, like you are vacuuming under the bed, and the belt gets tight.

I can see the height adjuster under my Bissell pet hair eraser vacuum, but it doesn’t adjust. The parts don’t look like they’re touching. It’s been iffy since I took it out of the box. Now it doesn’t adjust at all. Used only five times. Looks like I should be able to fix it myself. No local repair available. Could you help please?

.This is the pdf manual. If you look at page 12 you’ll see that the bottom of the machine has been pictured. Between the middle wheels near the brush (where arrows 4 and 2 are) you’ll find that the adjuster bar has a sprung mechanism. Now this is easy if you have time! If you take off the or just inspect the bar, check to see that nothing is clogged behind it. If it looks fine, check with your other hand by moving the rotary dial a couple of times and your other hand pressed down on the central bar between the wheels – if you can feel that the bar is moving whilst you turn the rotary dial then it should be working. Sometimes the spring that connects the dial to the bar can loosen and this may well have been the case. If you can unscrew the assembly do it gently as it will pop up to see if the spring has been put in place and then carefully put everything back together.
.
.Some uprights don’t allow the height adjuster to adjust whilst in the upright position though but if it doesn’t adjust at all then the spring has definately moved.

I just had this machine delivered yesterday (Janome Magnolia 7330). When I sew a straight seam (all I’ve tried so far) I get loops at the underside of the fabric. I adjusted the upper thread tension, but that did not help. In fact the loops got larger as I increased the tension. My thought is that I don’t have the machine threaded correctly. Thanks!
ANSWER : Your problem is in the tension adjustment. also check the stitch lengths.

Height adjustment not adjusting
ANSWER : The height adjustment wont engage unless the handle is in the down position. Not knowing this led me to overturn the hight adjustment knob.
.
.Step on the handle release, pull the handle back and lay the vac on its side. Then you can get the knob and the plate back together again.
.
.BTW, the reason I had this problem is because the front brush slows dramatically when using on carpet, I thought it was set too low, and turned the knob (in a manly fashion, putting it past its limit). Still working on that one. After inspecting the belt, looks like one worn and cracked spot gumming up the works.

How do you adjust the tension of the v-belt on the u6630-900
ANSWER : Hi! I’m not so familiar with this model, but I believe the V-belt is only under tension when the brush roll  control is in the “HARD” or “OFF” position. I’m not sure what the exact mechanism is, but I suspect that moving the control to the “ON” position is what places the belt under the correct tension and thus drives the roller.  Please let me know if I’m right!.As for your other point, not sure what you mean by the “hood assembly cover” or why you might want to take it off. If you can clarify, I’ll help if I can.
