Kenmore Vacuums\015 My Kenmore canister vacuum is about 6 years old. Today when I was using it, smoke suddenly started coming out from the canister motor area. The motor was also making a funny, dying sound. We unplugged it and let it sit an hour, but the same problem persists. We’ve changed the bag and filters and made sure that there are no blockages. The vacuum has never been serviced before. I am wondering if it is worth looking into getting it repaired or is it better to replace it.(Kenmore canister Vacuum: Model 22550300C)\015

How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

In many cases, the smoke you see is actually mechanical pump oil vapor. Many people tend to think that whenever there is smoke emitting from the pump, it means there is something wrong with the machine. But, oil vapor or oil mist is a natural by-product of creating vacuum in an oil sealed mechanical pump.
How long do Kenmore vacuums last? A. It`s suggested that the typical vacuum can last up to an average of eight years. With proper maintenance, a Kenmore vacuum could last that long or longer.
If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
Burning smell can indicate motor damage

If you suspect that the motor is damaged, you should not continue to use the vacuum cleaner! The cause of motor damage is usually wear and tear or damage caused by prolonged improper use (e.g. overheating). In most cases, it is not worth repairing.

Product Details: Made of premium materials, with H12 filtering effect, it can improve the working efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. PLEASE NOTE: Our filters are not washable and cannot be squeezed.
HEPA, or high efficiency particulate air filters filter out particles as small as 0.3 microns and keep them from being released back into air by your vacuum cleaner`s exhaust. It`s good practice to change your vacuum cleaner`s HEPA filter every 6 months.
Several things cause a burning smell, such as a motor part is that broken or worn out, the motor is running too hot, you suck up a burning cigarette, or the rubber belt has snapped. The belt helps turn the brush roller that helps guide dirt and debris into the vacuum.
One caveat: Handling this vacuum`s 23 pounds takes some muscle. In our member survey, Kenmore canisters earned a very good score for predicted reliability and an average rating for owner satisfaction.
Canister vacuums generally have more suction power than upright models. This power makes them particularly well suited for cleaning bare floors. And while they`re also efficient at cleaning carpets, upright vacuums, especially models that use collection bags, tend to be more effective carpet cleaners.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
Even though you may be diligent about keeping the air inside your home clean when the air is smoky outside, particles from smoke can still enter your home. When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust.
Overheating usually occurs because the dust bag has not been emptied, filter has not been cleaned or there is a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bent hand piece. If your vacuum shuts down unexpectedly, make sure you turn the vacuum off and unplug it from the wall socket.
How do I know if my HEPA filter is dirty? Open up the air purifier and remove the pre-filter. Your HEPA filter will have heavy clumps of dirt and dust and it`ll look black if it`s dirty. That`s an indication that your filter needs cleaning or replacement.
Because they force air through their filters to clean it, leaving an air purifier on consistently is the only way to maintain the highest possible level of air quality in a room or home. When your air purifier is turned off, it will stop filtering the air in that space.
Can you clean a HEPA filter? If your HEPA filter is not specifically labeled as washable or “permanent,” then the answer is no – while it may still filter the air it will have reduced effectiveness after washing.
Cleaning the air filter not only does not improve, but also deteriorates its filtration properties. Only periodical replacement of the filter with a new one can provide efficient filtration of the air entering directly into the combustion chamber of the engine.
After each new filter cartridge is installed, run cold water for 5 minutes to flush it.
Filters are for one use only. After three months or so, you`ll have to change it out for a fresh one. The only exception is reusable air filters. These washable filters are made out of more durable materials and can be cleaned.
The most common cause of a burning smell coming from your dryer is when the lint filter gets clogged. This not only causes a burning smell, but it`s also extremely dangerous, as it can start a fire. Most manufacturers recommend that you clean the filter out after every use to avoid this from happening.
Plastic Burning Smell in House

Faulty wiring or an overheated appliance can have an odor that smells like burning plastic. If it`s coming from your HVAC system, it could be from an overheated blower motor — possibly due to heavy dust buildup or a clogged air filter.

Ovens, Cooktops, and Ranges: Nearly all Kenmore cooking products are now made by Frigidaire. A small number of ranges come from LG.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
A canister vacuum will last you eight or more years. Most vacuums in this category are a bit like upright models but feature a larger, more robust body at the lower portion of the machine.
They`re mighty – canister vacuums often have stronger suction power than most uprights, so you`ll get a deeper clean. They`re typically quiet, so you don`t have to worry about scaring the baby or the dog! They often come with tool attachments that help clean things like stairs, blinds, and upholstery.

ANSWER : Sounds like a motor err. Could be repaired by a professional but it never be as good as a new one. Also they you might not find anyone to repair it because the replacement motor might cost more than a new vacuum /considering it’s age the motor will be hard to find and that makes it more expensive to repair./

I suggest you to buy a new vacuum.

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.
.
.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

Problem: Vacuum motor won’t turn on. The power head operates, but nothing from the vacuum. Have checked all areas of airflow: hose, bag, motor filter and hepa filter. All are fine. Have checked and rechecked all electrical connections, all seem to be in working order. Vacuum hasn’t run for a week or so, so it’s not the thermal protector, unless it’s defective. Vacuum was running fine last week. Didn’t stop operating when using. Went to v
ANSWER : Hello! The culprit is the PCB Assembly;
Part # KC86WBZR3000…Cost is $6.99. I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.

When we turn on the vacuum, the canister falls open. The clips holding the canister in place do not seem to hold the canister tightly which I’m sure that it did in the past. The clips do not look bent, but every time we turn on the vacuum the intense pressure blows the canister open only remaining attached the the rest of the vacuum by one clip
ANSWER : Check filter and make sure it is kept clean at regular intervals. Possibly worn out clip retainers on cannister side due to excessive pressure build up. Do not force closure unless pressure is back to normal. May crack cannister or damage unit beyond repair.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)
