How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Should the brush not rotate freely there may be debris tangled around the ends of the brush, carefully remove any obstructions or replace the brush with a new one. We recommend that you fit a new belt and brush once per year to keep your Reactive vacuum working efficiently.
To rectify the problem, you will need to disconnect the head of the Vax carpet cleaner from the wand section. You`ll then need to clean out any obvious dirt from the head and reattach the head to the wand again. When this is done, you`ll need to set the brush bar to `on` and you can carry on cleaning.
The roller brush is the combination of a belt, a roller, and sometimes a small vacuum head motor. The roller spins, and the bristles attached to it sweep up debris that then gets sucked into the dirt container of the vacuum. The brush head also helps to pull dirt and debris out of carpets of various pile heights.
After a year or so, you may need to replace your vacuum`s beater brush. If the bristles seem to be squished, broken or are varying heights, it`s time to replace the brush. These can be found online with the vacuum`s brand and model of your vacuum cleaner.
Almost every time that the brush stops turning, it is because of hair wrapped around the brush roller. You will burn out the belt if you use it too long in this mode. Your only fix is to take it apart and and clean it (and cut any hair stuck in it in the process).
You may have stalled the brush motor. To reset, turn off and unplug, then plug back in and turn on. The brush roll may have lodged debris or other entanglements keeping the brush from rotating.
Clear the brush roll of any hair and debris and inspect by placing it on its end and spin. The brush should spin freely. If it doesn`t spin; it may be time to replace.
This brush head rotates and pulsates. The main thing to remember is that the brush is 10 times more effective at cleansing, compared to just washing your face with your hands. It`s also said to be gentle enough for all skin types to use as often as twice a day.
Unless you have very dry or sensitive skin, you can use your facial cleansing brush twice a day– once in the morning and once at night. 6. Once you`re finished cleansing, follow up with the rest of your routine (toner, serum, moisturizer, and eye cream.)
If your brush is not turning it could be due to a broken Belt or a seized Brush Roll, follow these steps to resolve: Turn off and unplug machine. Use a Phllips-head screwdriver to remove 3 screws, 2 in the belt cover and 1 on the brush roll mount. Remove belt cover.
Upholstery Tool

This is a small, flat and rectangular brush around 4 to 5 inches in length, with a removable row of short bristles. As the name suggests, it`s perfect for dislodging crumbs, dirt and debris from furniture so that the vacuum itself can then suck it up.

The replacement process is easy – pinch the sides of the brush head to pull it off of the handle and then replace it using the same process. I love that my bottle brush looks fresh and renewed!
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Brushes in an electric motor are mainly used to transfer power between the rotating armature coils and stationary wires to the rotor. It also helps to make a contact with the rotating rings so that current can be supplied to the coil.
A carbon brush, also known as a motor brush, is the small part of the motor that conducts electrical current between the stationary wires (stator) and the rotating wires (rotor) of a motor or generator. The brush is typically made up of one or more carbon blocks and can come with one or more shunts or terminals.
Discovering the advantages of the on/off brush roll

When vacuuming hard surfaces, the brush roll can often push dust and debris away from the vacuum before it can be suctioned. Turning off the brush roll switches the vacuum to “suction-only” for quick and easy cleaning of hard floors.

Remove the brushroll and clean all hair, string, and lint from the brushroll bearings. If the vacuum cleaner brush still doesn`t spin after you clean the brushroll, consider replacing the brushroll.
There may be debris wrapped around the roller that is preventing it from turning. This is often due to hair, string, or other larger items that may be suck in the roller. Open the brushroll garage by sliding both of the release buttons away from you and then lift off the garage door.
Brushes. According to iRobot, brushes should be replaced every 6-12 months. Robot vacuums like the iRobot Roomba j7+ have multiple brushes that allow it to clean.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

Lastly, throw the dust brush vacuum attachment into a bucket of warm sudsy water. You just need a small bucket with warm water and a squirt of mild detergent like dish soap. This should loosen up and completely remove any caked on grime or dirt left on the bristles as well as inside the tool.
A review of studies showed that, in general, electric toothbrushes do decrease more plaque and gingivitis than manual toothbrushes. After three months of use, plaque was reduced by 21 percent and gingivitis by 11 percent. Oscillating (rotating) toothbrushes seem to work better than just vibrating toothbrushes.
Wheel brushes provide straight line brushing action, for surface finishing, cleaning and polishing, weld blending, deburring, and removal of paint, rust, scale, or other contamination.

The brushes on my Hoover Steamvac Widepath LS SpinScrub model # F6040 900 are not spinning. What should I do to get the brushes spinning again?
ANSWER : On those models the brushes are turned by suction.
1. Check the lower tank to be sure its completely closed and sealed.
2. Check the lower tank to be sure the tools filler plate is in place (if you used the tools recently)
3. If both 1&2 ok, manually turn the brushes, if they do not turn freely you may have a stuck turbine or bad brush block.
4. Take the brush block out by releasing the tabs on each corner being careful not to break them.
5. Place a large flat blade screwdriver in the square drive hole that drives the brushes under the machine. Gently turn. It should turn slowly with some resistance. If it turns slowly it is ok. If it turns with no resistance it may be bad as well. If it will not you may be able to break it loose with some even pressure being careful not to strip the hole. If it will not turn or makes a lot of noise replace the Turbine assembly.
6. If the brush block has a broken drive shaft or will not turn replace the brush block.

Here is what that brush block should look like.
