How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Move the dock to a new location and see if the robot can locate it. The dock should be placed against a wall, have at least 0.5m of clearance either side and 1.5m in front. Then, clean the front signal transmission area of the dock and the robot`s front sensor, both of which are used for the robot to locate the dock.
If the Side Brush is not spinning after cleaning, you may need a replacement Side Brush Module. Please visit the iRobot Store – Parts and Accessories, contact iRobot Customer Care, or use an authorized retailer or partner.
Clean the dock`s charing contacts

If the contacts get too dirty, the vacuum will have a tough time getting a solid charging connection, and it may be unable to dock as a result. The best way to clean the Roomba`s charging contacts is with a damp melamine foam, like Mr. Clean`s Magic Eraser.

If your Roomba® i Series Robot Vacuum is not turning on or is not able to charge, rebooting your robot tends to solve most related issues. To reboot your Roomba: Press and hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds. After you release the button, the light ring will show a white clockwise swirl while it reboots.
Try to disconnect and reconnect the docking station to the laptop. Disconnect both ends of the video cable and check for damaged or bent pins. Securely reconnect the cable to the monitor and docking station. Ensure the video cable (HDMI, or DisplayPort) is connected properly to the monitor and the docking station.
Whenever a robot vacuum follows the route, they eventually will have to dock to recharge, but how do robot vacuums find their base? After cleaning or when the robot has run out of charge, infrared signals show where the base is. The robot vacuum navigates to the base. After recharging, it continues to clean the home.
Wi-Fi Connected 600 & 800 Series Robots: Press and Hold the Dock and Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until the robot makes a beep tone, then release. Roomba Combo: Open the lid and locate the recessed Reset button to the left of the On/Off switch. Press and hold the Reset button for ten seconds.
At the end of a cleaning cycle or when the battery is running low, your robot returns to the Home Base® to charge. Your robot needs to find the infrared signal of the Home Base® to return.
Roomba finds the dock using an infrared sensor located in its front bumper. Once the battery level drops, the vacuum starts looking for an infrared signal emitted by the charging station. Once located, your roomba follows the signals and docks itself easily.
You can easily check the status of the battery in the iRobot® HOME App. A battery icon will be displayed in the top-right corner, indicating the current status of the battery.
If you get a more affordable model, like Roomba 675 you can expect a lifespan of up to two years. Go to the higher-end, like the iRobot j7+, and our research and testing suggest you can get five years plus of cleaning with proper maintenance.
Usually disconnecting the laptop from the docking station and holding the power button to turn off the docking station will allow it to restart properly.
If your dock is equipped with dock mode it will have a switch on the back and will also have an audio out option. Here are the instructions for dock mode and audio out. To place your phone into dock mode turn the switch on the back towards the speaker, this will automatically cause the Samsung clock widget will pop up.
Why can`t my robot find the dock? Make sure your dock is placed in a location free of any obstructions and has the appropriate amount of clearance (3 ft on each side and 5 ft in front of base). For best results place the dock on bare floor surfaces with strong Wi-Fi signal.
Check that the robot vacuum and charging dock are clean and undamaged: Wipe the charging dock and connection points clean with a dry cloth. Inspect the charging dock and cable for any signs of damage. Check that the power LED is illuminated when the charging dock is plugged in.
How do I tell my Roomba to go to its Home Base? Press the dock button on your Roomba. Look for the “Home” button along the top of your device—this is a small, circular button to the left of the larger “Clean” button. Press this button once to send your Roomba back to its Home Base.

I have a Bissell Pro Heat 2X carpet cleaner and the brushes spin, then stop. I turn it off and when I re-start, the brushes do not spin until I push foreward. The it spins and stops again. Both belts are tight. The brushes spin if held above the carpet, but upon contact with carpet it stops. Same thing on a hard surface.
ANSWER : The reason for the brushes to stop when it is above any surface is there is a switch in the handle that stops the brushes so it dont burn your motor up it may have a faulty switch.

My roomba backs away from docking station then starts to go then stops and spin left then stops and spins right after a few times stops and beeps many beeps. What is the problem

The brush bar on my brand new DC 28 has stopped spinning – it is not clogged with hair, it just stops spinning almost immediately. Is there a reset button?
ANSWER : If there is nothing dragging it down like clogged hair ect then usually this just means the rubber drive belt has either stretched or is too smooth to grip and properlly drive the beater bar brushes. When those happen the belt cannot get a grip and slips and the brushes aren’t driven. On a new vacuum it usually isn’t from wear it is from a loose belt or one that has moved out of line. If the brushes are a bit draggy or you went over something that slowed them down that can quickly cause the belt to get polished even on a new one.

You will probably want to take the bottom plate off and look at the bar. It may have fibers or hair at the edges out of sight. Also look at the drive belt it should be dull not shiney. The belts are inexpensive and just take a few minutes to replace. If you can find a vacuum store and buy the belt there they may change it for free or a nominal fee. Most stores that have a larger selection of vaccums will also have spare belts. You can change it yourself and the procedure should be in the owners manual of most vacuums.

My Eureka Maxima isn’t working right. The belt is spinning fine until I lower the handle to start to vacuum and then the belt stops spinning. As soon as I put the handle back in the upright position the belt spins again.
ANSWER : Sounds like belt is worn try changing belt.

I have a Eureka 5902AVZ and the brushroll does not work. when i remove the belt, which is not torn nor worn out, the motor spins perfectly fine. Though when i put the brushroll back into place, it shows that the motor is trying to spin, but with resistance. it seems the brushroll will not spin if locked into place, because there is no attachment on the left side of the brushroll that will allow it to spin freely with the belt. am I missing some parts or is there something else wrong?
ANSWER : Hi and welcome to Fixya. I am Kelly.
.
.You have correctly identified the problem as the brush roll itself.
.
.There is a bearing under each end cap of the brush roll. You can gain access to the bearings usually by gripping the browah roll end caps and rotate the caps in opposing but loosening (ccw rt / cw left) directions.
.
.Many times I have found that there is just a mass of hair under the end cap that functions like a brake. Clean it up really well on under BOTH end caps.
.
.Do a spin test by putting the end caps back on (Hold it horizontal) and rotating the brush roll with your thumbs. It should spin freely.
.
.If it feels like there is still friction then your probably going to have to take the brush roll with you down to the nearest vacuum cleaner repair / supply shop and get 2 new bearings. Most shops will install the NEW bearings for you if you have the brush roll in hand. It is a much cheaper fix than the brush roll itself.
.
.(buy a new belt too!)
.
. Take care
