How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Calcium and other minerals may build up in the nozzle, so you may need to clean the nozzle in order to produce steam. To do this, either use the nozzle cleaner provided with the Steam Pocket Mop, or use a straightened-out paper clip.
Heating Element. A common cause to your cleaner not producing steam can be a failed heating element. As the heater is used to heat up the water, if that has ruptured or burnt out your steam cleaner will not produce any steam. With the water tank filled and switched on the steamer should sound like a boiling kettle.
Yes, you can use this mop with water only. It comes with a spray bottle of cleaning solution that you can use optionally.
Hold down the steam trigger for about a minute to get the water circulating. You`ll be able to get the steam going in no time. If the garment steamer isn`t new, however, you may be out of water. Check the water reservoir inside of the machine and fill it up if it`s empty.
check the cap of the water tank to make sure it is correctly and securely attached to the water tank. check your water tank to make sure it is securely and correctly fitted in to the body of the garment steamer – incorrect placement of the water tank can block water from feeding in to the body and boiler of the steamer.
We have had some customers who have had their steam cleaners for 5-8 years and are still going strong. For less expensive models like the steam mops or handhelds, you should probably expect more like 3-6 years of consistent use.
What Should I Use? Good quality tap water. If you don`t have issues with hard water stains and buildup, your tap water is good.
Soap only lifts dirt and oil into water, making them suspend in water. Therefore, the more soap you use, the more your mop gets saturated with dirt. So, if you do not remove all the soapy water from the floor, the dirt remains, forming streaks on the floor.
Our testing has found that all steam mops remove stains fairly well, with marginal differences, and are likely slightly better than a regular mop and bucket due to the heat and vapour produced by the steam.
“Place the steamer at the top of the garment and gently work your way down,” recommends Sokolowski. For best results, pull down on the bottom of your garment when steaming, ensuring the fabric is taut. This way, as the fibers are steamed, they`re pulled straight and will dry into a smooth, wrinkle-free surface.
Mix your purchased descaler or mix 1 1/2 oz. of baking soda with one quart of clean water. Fill the empty tank with this mix. Seal the unit and turn the steam cleaner on so that it begins heating.
Not Plugged In

You will notice a blinking blue light on the front of the device when plugged in correctly. If the light fails to come on then try to plug into a different outlet.

If left unchecked, the steamer could overheat and stop working entirely.
But there`s no heat transfer taking place. So water can`t be boiled by passing steam through it.
A: No, not in the water tank. The only thing you should use IN the tank, according to Bissell, is distilled water. Not white vinegar, not detergents or cleaners of any kind, no essential oils, etc.
Tap water left in a steamer thickens due to calcium carbonate, resulting in a mineral buildup inside the steamer. That buildup eventually causes steamers to foam, which can potentially stain clothes and clog/break the steamer.
The manual recommends distilled water. Water contaminants will clog the steam nozzle, which is applicable to the question about additives.
Applicable on SC505, SC505a & SC505N — The Shark Professional Portable Steam Cleaner takes approximately 6 minutes to reach its working temperature and is ready for use when the red light on the side of the unit turns green.
Most steam cleaners are designed to be used without detergent, so stick to water only with these. Some models, on the other hand, can be used with detergent – follow the manufacturer`s instructions.
Don`t do it! Steam mops create too much moisture for laminate floors, which are often manufactured with a compressed fiber/particleboard layers. The steam can cause swelling and warping of the product.
Although it may be tempting to deep clean your hardwood floors with a steam mop, don`t. “Drastic temperature changes and moisture may warp the wood,” says Steve Stocki, manager of marketing and merchandising at Lumber Liquidators. That`s true whether you have solid or engineered wood floors, and for bamboo, too.
If you have hard floors and want a time-saving, deep cleaning solution, a vacuum mop may be worth the investment. If you prefer a more eco-friendly, versatile, and budget-friendly option, a steam mop may be the way to go. Always check customer reviews and warranty information before making a final decision.
How hot does it get? We used a hi-tech thermometer that registered the Shark`s steam at 217 degrees. We also tested on wood floors with no problems. “Does It Work?” We give the Shark Steam Mop a yes.

While using my mop yesterday, it stopped letting steam come out. Tonight I plugged it up again and you could hear it trying to steam. I push the button in to release the square frame and it pushed out a burst of steam and pushed the head off. Put it back together and it still will not let steam out. No matter how much water is in it.

ANSWER : HEATING ELEMENTS BURNT OUT. WILL COST OVER $100. TOFIX. SHARK NOW HAS A NEW MODEL “SHARK 3” MUCH BETTER

I have a bissell quickwash 1950-e. I bought it Jan. 2006, and have only used it 8-10 times, I live in a very hard water area, so I though if I put some vinegar in with the cleaning solution it would get rid of any hard water deposits, unfortunatly the solution went lumpy in the tank and stoped spraying out water, I have opened it, hose clean, sprayer not blocked, x at bottom of water container when depresed water trickles out, component that opens the x when water container placed, also ran wate
ANSWER : Hard to say what is causing your problem, replacing the cap and insert on the water tank may help, part #2041111, even tho it may trickle out water when depressed, they can still be bad. The other thing would be the rod not relesing the water like it should. The big draw back to this model is Bissell has obsoleted all of its parts and most are no longer available. Might be wiser to buy new.

Producing steam i just got the shark assembled the mv2010, then it is not doing anything, it vacuumed just fine, but when i put the steam pad on it wouldnt ever produce steam or do anything,it felt like the water was heating up but even after it sat for 20-30 minutes when i pull handle back towards me nothing happens, no lights no steam no nothing, so why wont it work

We have a Bissell Proheat 2X (model 8920). The problem we are having is when water/soap is initially released (all settings) it continues to leak out the front water spray nozzles unit the water containers are empty. The vacuum works but can’t keep up with the continuous water leaking out. Do you have any idea what is sticking open to allow the continued release of water when the machine is running? Thanks Rick
ANSWER : Return it. It is faulty and should not do that. Mine does not. Does require changing water about evrery 10 minutes but one can see the filth in the water. Also re-clean with plain water over areas that were cleaned to remove all cleaner. Old cleaner in carpet to dirt is like a bug attracted to a bug zapper. It can be time consuming, but it will pay for itself and can do a great job if you pay attention when water or cleaner runs out, otherwise it will not clean properly!
