How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

To choose the right lamp shade width, measure your lamp base and multiply by two. For a round base measure straight across; For a square base, measure diagonally. The widest part of your shade should be at least a half-inch wider than the widest part of your base on each side.
Although a lamp shade is usually seen as a decorative element, its main purpose is to diffuse or redirect the light from the bulb for maximum effectiveness and protect your eyes from the bulb`s glare. With no shade at all, a bare bulb`s light goes out equally in all directions.
1. Fitter Lampshades are not universal! Check your lamp base and any existing shade to determine what style of fitter your new lampshade should have.
Once you`ve picked the appropriate size of your lamp shade, you need to consider how it will attach to the base. The three most common types of lamp shade assemblies are: spider, uno and clip on.
For most people, the process of changing a lamp shade is simple: just measure the fitter size, order a corresponding shade, unscrew the thumb screws holding the original shade in place, switch out the shades, then replace the thumb screws. That`s it!
No Shade : Table Lamps.
There are three basic types of lamp shade fittings: spider fittings, uno fittings, and clip-on fittings: Spider Fittings: Spider fittings are the most common type of fitting for table and floor lamps and are used with harps.
If you intend to replace the cord as well, carefully remove the felt cover from the base of the lamp. Use a razor blade to help peel it off. This will expose a threaded tube with a nut on the end through which the lamp cord travels.
We recommend Bostick Fabric glue and Gutterman Creativ HT2 textile glue.
The most versatile of lamp shade styles, a drum lamp shade is symmetric and cylindrical, perfectly round and with identical top and bottom openings.
• Threaded UNO Fitter: This shade fitter looks like a ring with three spokes; the ring of the lamp shade threads directly onto the lamp`s socket. Many arc or bridge arm floor lamps with downward-pointing bulbs are UNO fitter compatible, but UNO fitter shades can work with lamps with sockets that point up or down.
Check For Makers` Marks

As with many types of antiques, vintage lamps are likely to have a date stamp or maker`s mark somewhere. Typically, these marks are on the base of the lamp, but sometimes there are also stickers on the light fixing itself that will include a name or date or manufacturer.

Dear Sir or Madam, I own a black 23 x 47 x 7 mm Rowenta lighter. It has a screw on bottom that I cannot remove. What is it hiding ? Is this lighter refillable ? Is there a flint to replace ?. I’ve found on your site the following : “By jbbiii on Apr 06, 2009 Father died and left me a Rowenta lighter purchased in Stutgart in 1952. It has a screw on bottom with spring to replace the flint, but I cannot figure out how to open the bottom to replace the cotton wadding which I can see through the hole
ANSWER : Hello
.The flint should be near the striker.Or the thumb roller, usually below it.
.As old as it is you may not see it beacause its worn down.
.
.Maybe taking it to an antique store or a smoke shop would be more helpfull.
.I know with zippos the cover slides off to the top when you hold the 2 nodules in.Which is how you get to the wick.
.The screw at the bottom which does not come out, may be a flame adjustment screw.

GE on/off timer for a bathroom fan – switch has four wires
Green – ground
White – neutral
Black – power
Blue – lead

My fan has two – white neutral and black lead

I have tried every configuration and cannot get the fan to work. Any suggestions?

ANSWER : I would guess that the black wire on the timer is the power in and blue is the power out to the fan (hook it to the black wire going to the fan) The other colors are right.

My older Dyson DC14 (the purple one) early model with a clutch on the beater bar belt needs a clutch replacement. The bar has been cleaned and there are no worn or damaged parts so I conclude that the clutch at the motor end of the belt needs to be replaced. I can find the part online but no instructions on how to disassemble the vacuum to get to and replace it. Dysons only advice is to give me the address and phone of the nearest service center. Can you help me?
ANSWER : Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com which has some very useful info on dismantling and repairing Dysons.

.Although this site doesnt actually cover the DC14 yet, the DC14 is very similar to the DC07 so as regards dissassembling the machine, and replacing the clutch, my experience is that the DC07 info will enable you to do the job.
