How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
Brush Head Bearings Are Clogged or Have Failed

These are symptoms of bad or dirty bearings. You should remove the brush roll or rolls from the vacuum. Check to see that the bearings at the end of the brush roll allow it to spin freely. Make sure that there is no hair trapped in the bearings.

To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on. Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns off when the machine is upright and automatically turns on when the machine is in the vacuuming position.
The brush roll or its bearings may be clogged with hair, threads or dirt. Make sure they are clean and the roll spins. The belt may also have slipped because it was loose. Check the fit of the new belt when it is installed.
If your vacuum`s brush bar is not turning, the bar may be clogged from hair and other debris. Ensure that the brushbar button, which is gray and located next to the power button, is turned on. If this is not the issue, then the brushbar itself may be damaged or stuck.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
It`s designed with an anti-tangle conical brush bar so that you can pick up long hair and pet hair – fast. Unlike other anti-tangle tools, Dyson`s doesn`t compromise on performance. An integrated motor in the brush bar spins at up to 3500rpm to remove ground-in dirt.
If your brush is scratching your floor, or not cleaning as well as it used to, then you may want to replace your brush bar.
Press the brush control button located next to the ON/OFF switch to turn the brushbar off for vacumming delicate rugs, looped carpets and hard floors. Press the button again to restart the brushbar for vacuuming carpets.
Inspecting the Vacuum Commutator for Motor Brush Problems

Test that by turning the motor off and pushing on the center shaft, the armature. If it has any play, besides spinning, then replace the motor. If solid then replace the brushes – motor brush replacement instructions.

Brushes. According to iRobot, brushes should be replaced every 6-12 months. Robot vacuums like the iRobot Roomba j7+ have multiple brushes that allow it to clean.
The DC14 was released in 2004. It is a revision of the DC07 upright vacuum cleaner with lower centre of gravity and `telescope reach`. It uses Dyson`s Root 8 Cyclone technology, which maintains constant suction.
In many cases, you probably can repair a Dyson yourself, especially when it comes to common issues (see below). However, even if your machine needs some extra TLC by a Dyson expert, it can be worth getting it repaired.
Most problems arise because of a blockage – if not a dirty filter or cyclone unit, then something could be caught in the wand or the brush bar. Once again, the lack of suction could be caused by a dirty filter or a blockage somewhere in the vacuum`s system.
How and when to clean/replace your Dyson filter. Your Dyson vacuum cleaner may include one or more filters that need to be cleaned to keep your machine operating at its best. Washing your Dyson filter is quick and easy.
If it keeps flashing after being washed, dried thoroughly and reattached, the filter needs to be replaced.
Beater Bars

Many vacuums feature a rotating brush, known as a beater bar, which is designed to agitate the carpet fibers to help loosen soil deep in the pile. This feature is helpful in many cut-pile carpets but can be damaging to certain styles.

Dyson invested £2.5 billion in research and development.

While you might feel that this is the reason their products are expensive, you`re highly mistaken. This investment was mainly to accommodate a centre for their 1,200 employees, 22 laboratories, prototyping space, and areas for collaborative work.

The Dyson 2023 vacuum lineup features a new cleaner head

Dyson also announced a fifth generation of cordless vacuums, the Dyson Gen5detect and Dyson Gen5outsize. The new Dyson cordless vacuums deliver more powerful suction than ever before.

The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is the most powerful vacuum we`ve ever tested. The most powerful upright we`ve ever tested, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 vacuumed 76.3% of our testing dirt in a single pass, far exceeding the upright average of about 33%.

The Dyson Airwrap™ styler harnesses an aerodynamic phenomenon called the Coanda effect, propelled by the Dyson digital motor V9. It attracts hair to the surface of the brush, propelling air along the hair strands. Styling with air, not extreme heat.

The brush bar on my Dyson DC17 stopped turning.
ANSWER : If this model has a brush control – i.e a roller at the side of the model which controls brush to spin or not, then its a protected brush model – therefore even if the drive belt is intact the Dyson would have to be repaired by a service personnel or professional. The brush protection isn’t able to be taken apart and sounds like it may well have slipped off due to tension.

The beater bar on my Dyson won’t turn. The vacuum runs and suctions but the bar won’t turn and the belt is not broke. The beater bar did get a carpet fiber caught and wrapped around it which stopped the bar and I removed the bar to cut the fiber loose and replaced it and now it won’t turn
ANSWER : The belt doesn’t have to be broken to make the vacuum not work correctly. If the belt is stretched the vacuum won’t operate the way it is supposed to. You can get replacement Dyson Belts here:

I’m trying to figure out which dyson vacuum is better, the DC14 or DC17. from what i read, the DC17 is the newer model of the DC14, the DC17 added an extra motor for the brush, but from the dyson site, the DC17 has less suction power. it went from 250AW (dc14) to 220AW (dc17). is that a significant difference that i should be worried about?
ANSWER : Hi,

DC17 is much better than DC14. I always believe User’s review are much better than what Features Company usually Displays.

Dyson DC14 Brush Bar won’t turn
ANSWER : You don’t need to take it for repairs, I just corrected the same problem on the phone with a tech. Have the head on your lap, make sure the end nearest the little belt has the rounded side of the bar facing you. The squared off end faces towards the machine. Place your left hand pointy finger under the bar (the 2 inch bar next to the little belt) and lift up, while finessing the loose end of the bar into place, with the rounded part still facing you. Then it sort of snaps into place. Now, replace the face plate. In the upright mode, starting at the carpet dial, switch the dial back and forth between carpet and bare floor, ten times. (the tech actually referred to this as re-setting the vac. LOL) Plug the vac in, incline the hand, and start. It should work. It didn’t for me the first time and made a horrible sound. That meant I had to go and repeat the process again, but lo and behold, IT WORKED! When in doubt, call the tech and don’t let them get away from you; have them stay on the line until the problem is resolved.

Brush bar does not turn & makes a loud noise
ANSWER : You need to clean your roller and replace the clutch assembly that drives the belts. poorly designed vacuum with many flaws.

Motorized brush bar not turning on Dyson Vacuum
ANSWER : Apparent common failure is that either the thin yellow and or blue motor drive wires that run from the LH side of the vacuum where the “control board” is located down into the hinge / ball area become stretched and then fray and eventually break. Happened to my Dyson twice. First repaired under warranty, second took about 20 minutes. You need a Torx screwdriver to remove the LH panel ( 4 screws) and also an access panel (2 screws) at the side of the ball which permits access to the blue / yellow wire connectors. I replaced with a new wire and connectors having fed the wires through the access hole making sure sure enough wire was available for the movement of the handle. Also ensure that when the covers are replaced they do not trap any wires underneath.

Rotating bruch My vaccum brush will not turn. This happened after sucking up a cord that wrapped arou8nd the brush. I was able to pull the cord back out but now the brush will not turn. The vaccum does turn on an sounds like it is working with no soinning brush.
