How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If brush will not turn by hand, or belt is broken, replace the damaged part by ordering online at BISSELL.com. Clean off any debris on the brush. If the brush is still not turning, please take the unit to an Authorized Service Center to have a Quality Technician inspect the unit. Great!
Check to make sure the Vacuum Suction Knob is turned towards “Floor Suction.” Or there could be large debris clogging the brush roll rotation. Your dirt container may not be seated properly or may be full. Press the Tank Release button and remove.
Unplug your machine to reset the brush. While unplugged, remove the brush window and brush roll from your machine, by pulling the tab. Take out the obstruction that was causing the machine to stop working. Once the obstruction is removed, you may reassemble the brush roll and brush window.
Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
Overall, Bissell is a popular vacuum brand for a reason – these vacuums are dependable and last up to two years without issue. However, some models are better than others when it comes to cleaning different surfaces.
A possible cause might be that the tank is not properly seated. To assure the tank is seated properly, pick it up and re-seat is so it sits snugly on the unit. If this doesn`t fix the problem, make sure the tank is assembled properly. To make sure they are both latched properly, pick the tank up by its handle.
Check both the brush roll and chamber for any large debris that may clog or stop the brush from spinning. If it is damaged or broken, you can buy a replacement on bissell.com. Replace your brush roll by re-inserting. Using the coin again, turn the groove counterclockwise to lock the brush in place.
Check to see if your clean water tank is empty. The clean water tank also may not be seated properly. The brush window could also not be latched into place. Turn off your machine and check to see if the brush window is secure.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

There are two filters in your vacuum. One is the Pre-Motor Filter, and the other is the Post Motor Filter.
These filters can be hand washed in warm water. A mild detergent may also be used. Close the lid and return the tank back to the vacuum. Press firmly until you hear a “click”.
If it doesn`t spin, replace the brush roll. Inspect the belt, replace if it appears damaged. Place the belt back on the motor gear, pull the belt over the brush roll and place back in. Position the brush roll end opposite of the belt to line up with the tab.

Clear the brush roll of any hair and debris and inspect by placing it on its end and spin. The brush should spin freely. If it doesn`t spin; it may be time to replace.

I have a DC07 and the brush wasn’t rotating and I had no suction at the brush but perfect suction through the hose. I noticed a large build up of dog hair around the brush so I took off the cover plate and removed all the hair, cleaned inside the floor/brush housing and cleaned out the hose. I also cleaned the filter and removed the other air access cover and made sure that they were clear. I put everything back and the brush still doesn’t turn and there is still no suction through the bottom

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

I have a Bissell Pro Heat 2X carpet cleaner and the brushes spin, then stop. I turn it off and when I re-start, the brushes do not spin until I push foreward. The it spins and stops again. Both belts are tight. The brushes spin if held above the carpet, but upon contact with carpet it stops. Same thing on a hard surface.
ANSWER : The reason for the brushes to stop when it is above any surface is there is a switch in the handle that stops the brushes so it dont burn your motor up it may have a faulty switch.

ANSWER : Ok, this is a “Brush Height Adjustment” issue. It will probably work great on a hard surface but on carpet the brushes bog. If you’ve taken the unit apart already…Sorry….do it again. When you do, you’ll see a String which allows the brushes to “Float” on different surface heights. Loosen the screw a little and pull a bit more string through. Re Tighten the screw and put it together enough for a test run. Now reset the roomba. To reset the Roomba, power the Roomba on, and press the Spot, and Dock.buttons together for at least 8 seconds. Until it plays a tune. The.clock, and any schedule is erased at this time. Try running the Roomba.with the dust bin removed to see the brushes spin easier..
.
Second method, is taking off the bottom cover, and removing the.battery. While it’s removed, and not plugged into the charger, press.the clean button for at least 20 seconds. This will erase the memory..Replace battery, and cover. Run the Roomba to see if the brushes start.to spin. You can also remove the brush housing by removing the 4 screws.and reseating it, to see if it was a bad connection, since you have the.bottom cover off.

No suction I have new belts. Everything is clean. No clogs. When I turn it on it smells like rubber , the brush doesnt spin. Everything seems to be free flowing.. Roller brush isnt stuck on the ends. Took off hose to make sure no clogs anywhere. There is not even suction thru the hose with the handle in upright position.
ANSWER : Generally, the problem is that the belt is not running the brushes.  This is caused by one of the following:..

    .

  • beater brush is jammed.  This is either an object stuck in the brush or immediately behind it in the housing or the bearings are gummed up with floor dirt
  • .

  • the belt is broken and rubbing against the motor shaft
  • .

  • the plate holding the beater brush has a part broken off which is causing the beater to jam

.Clogs are not the problem here.  Inspect and resolve the above.  Use a new belt.  Never reuse this one.
