How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Your dirty water tank may not be secured tightly. Check the rubber tab on the dirty water tank and press firmly on all edges to secure it tightly. The accessory hose door also needs to be closed securely. Check the door and make sure it is locked in place.
BISSELL® carpet cleaners are ready when you need them. From upright carpet cleaners to portable carpet cleaners, BISSELL makes spot and stain removal a cinch.
BISSELL Carpet Cleaners use powerful suction to remove most of the water from your carpets during the cleaning process, however the carpet will be damp afterwards. To reduce the time it takes for the carpet to dry, open as many windows and doors as possible to allow air to flow through the room.
First, check to make sure the clean tank has water and/or the water & formula mixture in the tank. If your tank is empty, this could be the reason your machine is not spraying. You will need to fill your clean tank again. Reseat the tank and ensure it sits snug on the machine.
If you don`t use the right detergent and clean water, residue can be left on your carpet after washing. The traditional method of cleaning and rinsing your carpet will leave soap and shampoo residue that will turn into mildew over time. As a consequence, it will quickly become covered in dust and dirt.
It`s the foam that brings the dirt out of the carpet. Dirt particles stick to it, and it is this that makes your water dirty when it is sucked up. If your carpet cleaning solution is too foamy, or you leave foam in the carpet, more dirt will be attracted to it.
How long does it take carpets and upholstery to dry after carpet cleaning? On the average, it will take approximately 2-4 hours for carpet and upholstery to dry after being carpet cleaned. To expedite the drying process, you will want to use a fan and increase your air circulation.
Vacuums are great at picking up surface dirt on carpets & upholstery along with the loose, dry, debris that floats in between carpet fibres.
Yes, you should keep cleaning the carpet until the water is clear. This will ensure that your carpets are clean and free of dirt, dust, and other allergens. However, you should be careful not to scrub too hard or use too much water. Doing so can damage the carpet and lead to more stains in the future.
Don`t let water linger on carpet, even if it`s just a little bit. Mold grows fast, and water can quickly soak through and damage the pad and subfloor.
Additionally, the ProHeat 2X® Revolution® Pet Pro Plus carpet cleaner comes with 3 different cleaning modes; MAX Clean Mode to remove embedded dirt, stains and allergens, Deep Clean Mode for tough stains and spills, and Express Clean Mode to dry your carpets in about 30 minutes.
The fibers should feel soft and smell fresh. A clean carpet will also not have any signs of stains, mud, or contaminants. Clean carpets feel lighter and fluffier in hand once completely dry. In other words, a professionally well-cleaned carpet will feel as good as new.
Most cleaning methods simply can`t remove all the old hair, dust mites, dirt, soapy residues and chemicals. After the cleaning crew leaves, the gunk remaining in your carpeting acts like a magnet for a whole new layer of grime.
Wicking is when the carpet gets wet from cleaning, and the deeper parts of the carpet fibers absorb all that excess moisture. The deeper parts of the fiber then push that moisture upward through evaporation to the surface of the carpet, and this causes the browning of your home`s carpet.
Therefore, to clean up those muddy messes or spilled Kool-Aid, you need to vacuum at least every few days, if not daily. Shampoo or steam clean your carpets at least every 6 months and consider having a professional cleaning service come in every 12-18 months to make sure your carpets stay fresh.
Cut Pile– Cut pile carpeting is mostly found in residential homes. The fuzzy layer that cut pile provides, leaves a soft layer of cushion around your house that is hard to beat. One of its only downsides is, it can be difficult to clean.
Carpets made of nylon fibers are some of the most durable and easiest to clean. Nylon is a strong fiber and stands up very well to abrasion. It is also resilient with good texture retention to maintain its original appearance. Plus, nylon carpeting responds very well to steam cleaning.
It is recommended that you try to stay off the freshly cleaned carpets until they are dry – about 6 hours. If you MUST walk over your damp carpet before it is dry use EXTREME caution. Where you transition from carpet to another hard surface, like tile or hardwood, can be very slippery.
Laundry Detergents aren`t Formulated for Carpet Cleaning

Of course not! Cleaning solutions are specifically formulated to clean and not damage the machines they`re used in and the material they`re treating. Laundry soap is designed to be used in washing machines to clean clothing.

Upright vacuums are also particularly well-suited for carpeting, because they`re typically more powerful than cordless stick vacuums and can more easily lift up hair, dirt, and debris that`s embedded in carpet fibers.
Vacuum regularly

Nothing breathes new life into thick pile carpet like a vacuum cleaner. As long as it delivers enough suction power, your vacuum should be able to pull up individual fibres before they become permanently flattened. Vacuuming also removes dirt and dust that can make flattening worse.

Step 3: Setup Your Carpet Cleaner

After you get out your carpet cleaner, fill the clean tank to the line with hot (not boiling) tap water. Hot water does a better job cleaning than cold but, if you boil it, you run the risk of melting parts of your carpet cleaner.

You shouldn`t need to make more than two passes with cleaning solution (especially if you pre-treated stains) when deep cleaning your carpet. Make additional passes without spray button pressed. The Rug Doctor deep cleaner has a powerful motor that will suck up and extract water from your carpet.
If the carpet or rug was wet for more than 48 hours, regardless of the source of the water, general EPA/FEMA/CDC guidelines recommend removal and replacement.

My carpet cleaner (bissell proheat plus) is not steaming, dispensing cleaner. Seems like there’s a little thingy that should be spinning or turning….. When I work a small area of carpet, it just leaves behind dry blobs of carpet gunk like pet hair. I had to use a carpet sweeper to clean up. FYI – I filled the cleaning fluid container and after trying to clean the carpet, it did empty out but the carpet isn’t wet. Any tips? The manual doesn’t help.

Carpet stained recently cleaned my cream coloured carpet in my entrance hall with a carpet cleaning product, wet foamy spray type, ran out of this and found a part bottle of a different brand in my cupboard, used this to finish off however must be some sort of reaction and carpet gone a greenish colour i think (colour blind sorry ) any idea’s of any product that might restore my carpet, will try anything, nothing to loose. thank you Peter McGurk Goole East Yorks
ANSWER : Ok in the future try to have carpet cleaned only by a pro. For spot cleaning use white paper towels or dish towels and warm water. (ONLY WHITE) 99% of fabric is white and then dyed to color and if you use a color cloth you might pull the dye from the cloth into the carpet. Now what you can try is your basic dishwashing detergent like electrosal with warm water and a dishtowel. little at a time try to blot not rub. try AFTA if that doesnt work. wet the rag first with warm water. pour the afta on the wet rag not on the carpet.

No idea how the belts should look onit and i cant find a picture or a video showing how belts look o
ANSWER : Hello,
.
.Here’s a link to a very helpful video that shows you step by step on how to access and replace the belt on your machine. When the brushes stop spinning, but the rest of the machine works fine, this is a tell-tale sign that your belt has gone bad.

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

How do I attach and use the shampooing attachment so I can clean my couch?

.How do I attach and use the shampooing attachment…
.Posted by rottylvr on May 08, 2008
.I have a Kirby Vacuum and Carpet Cleaner that I know how to use, all except the attachment that I am not sure about. I am not sure if it is a vacuuming attachment or can I attach it and use it to clean my couch, I do not have the user guide for my vacuum as I got it from my son’s ex girlfriend in lieu of money she owed me. It looks like it should be used for shampooing things like stairs and furniture, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out! Can you please help me? Tell me how to attach it if it is supposed to be used to clean stairs and furniture or tell me where I can find the user guide to look at and see how to use it……Oh by the way I have a 160 pound rottweiler that tries to live on my furniture and my couch is in desperate need of cleaning, this is my only day off and I have spent all day cleaning carpets due to my dog and would love to clean my couch before returning to work and putting my dog in the back yard now that it is warm enough for him to be outside all day.
Thanks,
Desperate to reclaim her couch

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. My suggestion is that you contact the Kirby Co in Cleveland listed below and they will instruct you either to down load a owner’s manual or they will mail one out to you, there might be a local Kirby dealer in your area that might have a manual as well. Also, there is a separate shampoo head that will be in the owner’s manual, you remove the vacuum head and bag assm and attach the shampoo head, make sure you use genuine Kirby shampoo for the carpet. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

I have the Dyson DC14 and its like it’s not brushing the carpet anymore, The brush is spinning, but its like it isn’t self adjusting to the carpet height? It still has suction, but doesn’t make the same sound it used to when you’d start vacuuming. Its like it never adjusts anymore???
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

It sounds as though the internal hose underneath the machine has twisted slightly. With the machine switched off, lay it on its side and look at the base. You should be able to see a small corrigated hose. Simply twist this a quarter turn clockwise which hopefully will allow the head to adjust again.

If you are still having problems, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards

How to take apart the Hoover U6437-900 to change the belt and clean it.
I have the belts and I have removed several screws. It looks like the knobs for the wheel carpet height and carpet to floor selection are the problems but I can not figure out how to remove the knobs. Besides, I am not certain if this is the problem. Do you have the instructions? Thanks
