How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

They work on a pair of rotatable wheels inside a storage space that houses the entire length of the cord. When a user pulls the cord, extending it, the ratchets lock automatically, preventing the cord from rolling back up into its original storage position.
Possible Causes: The brush roll is blocked. The cleaner might be overheated. The battery is empty (last LED blinks)
Retractable Cord Reels

They use a spring mechanism to provide the retraction force. As the cord is uncoiled and pulled out for use, tension builds up on the steel torsion spring. Once the electrical power is no longer needed, the stored energy in the torsion spring is released, retracting the cord back to the reel.

Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
It`s also important to pay attention to the vacuum cords. Tishko recommends checking them daily. Replacing a cord might cost $85 in labor and up to $130 for the new part.
Regardless if a cord is damaged by age, heavy use, pinching, or bearing too much weight (when an appliance is hung by its cord), a damaged cord increases the risk of electrical shock, fire, or electrocution, and should NOT be used. “The electric cord on your appliance contains a live wire that is securely insulated.
It occurs most often in motion applications, where constant flexing and repetitive motions can cause stress and deform the cable, often destroying the core. As a cable moves within a cable carrier or on a robot arm, for example, its conductors also move, shifting from the original stranding design.
Extension cords, curl up when the user wraps the cord improperly. Many operators use their arm to wrap the cord.
Using extension leads safely

This is all too easy if you add extra adaptors/extensions, or appliances that use lots of power like kettles, tumble dryers or heaters. It`s also important to fully unwind drum extensions leads. If you leave them coiled, they can overheat and cause a fire.

Hang Your Cords High

Use that loop to support the weight of the heavy part of the cord that dangles down to the ground. You can hang it over a nail, on a scaffolding peg, or anything else that it can hook onto.

There are some hazards in using extension cords that you can control. No extension cord can stand rough usage. If you kink it, knot it, or crush it and even bend it, you can break the insulation, which may cause a short circuit and a fire or even an electric shock. Most cords used carry regular 110-volt electricity.
Cord Rewind: 25FT cord automatically retracts with the touch of a button. Multi-Floor Performance: 5-level height adjustment for various hard floors and carpet types. Multipurpose Attachments: Tools for corners, crevices, stairs, furniture and more. WindTunnel Suction Technology: Enjoy powerful, long-lasting suction.
Replace the Brush Belt

If the vacuum is still hard to push, tilt it back far enough that you can inspect the moving brush while the vacuum is running. Be careful to avoid getting too close to the moving parts. If you see that the brush is not turning, that means you will need to replace the brush belt.

If there is a clog in the vacuum, you won`t have good suction and the vacuum won`t work. The clog can be in the vacuum head, the hose or where the hose meets the actual vacuum.
Overheated Motor

If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

Gravity and friction are the two main forces that make vacuum suction work. While gravity pulls molecules in the air toward the earth, creating an atmospheric pressure, the suction cup and vacuum pump cause a pressure difference, attaching both surfaces.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
Answer: Extension cords used in construction may be repaired, so long as the repair returns the cord to the “approved” state required by §1926.403(a).
When a power cord is damaged, the appliance should be removed from service and the cord replaced as soon as possible to reduce the risk of electrical shock, electrocution or fire. Cord damage can also result when the cord is pinched, caught between or punctured by heavy objects such as legs on a desk.
Extension cords can overheat and cause fires when used improperly. Overheating is usually caused by overloading or connecting appliances that consume more watts than the cord can handle. Damaged extension cords can also cause fires.
A flexible cord may be damaged by door or window edges, by staples and fastenings, by abrasion from adjacent materials, or simply by aging. If the electrical conductors become exposed, there is a danger of shocks, burns, or fire.
In general, extension cords should not exceed 100 feet in length. However, by plugging one extension cord into another, the maximum cord length can be easily exceeded. If the job requires more than a 100-foot distance, a temporary power distribution box is required.
An improperly sized extension cord can cause a tool or appliance motor to burn out if allowed to run for too long. It can also cause a dangerous situation if it overheats.

The cord on my electrolux Epic 6500 has been pulled too far out and will not rewind. How can I access the cord reel to rewind?
ANSWER : There are two keys holding the body together, underneath the bumpers on the side of the vac. With the bag door open these keys when gripped with pliers will slide forward to release the body panels.

Before opening the vac, gently push the cord back inside the housing.
2 possibilities:
If the spool rotates and allows the cord to push in , the body must be disassembled, and the cord winder removed and the spring reloaded. This is tricky work. you will need to wind the entire cord onto the spool, then load 3.5 rotations onto the coil spring for tensioning, then reassemble. It’s a bit like working on a land mine of you’re new at it. Wear safety glasses.

BUT if the spool is locked from the outside and the cord wont push in or pull out, a fine , long blade screwdriver can be inserted diagonal to the body through the cord slot and with luck you can lift a cog of the spool releasing tension and the rewind will work. try that first , but be gentle . You must release the cord spool allowing a a dog ear catch cog to release inside by gently lifting upwards.

Bosch canister vac BSG81313. Took cover off to remove lots of hair, dirt etc from running without bag in place. Everything went back together OK, but cord reel spring went zip when cover was removed. How do I rewind the spring so there is tension when the cord is pulled out ? Wound cord back onto reel, but reel just clicks ever revolution etc…no tension when cord is pulled out of vac.

Bob

ANSWER : The spring inside the hub of the cord wheel has escaped from the locking tab. You must completely dismantle the vacuum to access the cord wheel – take it out, reattach the spring and reassemble the unit. All you need is a phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers and some patience.

Cord rewinder on a Electrolux model C102J vacum cleaner
ANSWER : Hi there Johnd, SmartAlec from Nelsonvacuums.com.au here. I fix vacuums full time for a living and the first time i had this problem with the australian version of this vacuum it tok me an hour to pull it apart and back together. now i have done a dozen or so it is about a 30minute operation. I dont know what you rate your technical skill level at but i give this machine a 8/10 for hardness. It is most likely that the cord has jumped off the reel and is wedged so it shouldn’t require parts but it cant be done without nearly stripping it down. There is no reset or similar for the reel. My advice unless your very confident take it to a repairer. It would be 1/2 – 1hr of labour charge only i would think.
.Hope this helps.

Hoover UH70120 WindTunnel TSeries problems with the cord. im a tech savy guy and have been trying to fix a cord after it was pulled to far out and now wont auto retract, but just cant find a way to pull the cord rewind mechanism out to work on it. Any advice
ANSWER : You will probably have to replace the cord winding mechanism. I have never had any luck trying to repair one. Cord retracters are great when they work but it seems like they always go bad before too long. On many units you can’t even replace the cord if you get a bad spot in it, you have to buy a new cord reel which can get expensive.

.
.Hello,
.I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
.The question I have is it the Electrolux or the Royal cordwinder, if the cordwinder is sprung you may have to get a new one or a good used one, it’s been a while since I have done a cordwinder and I have seen it done, but I know when you remove the cordwinder you need to lock in the spring so that it does not loose it tension and re-coil ability. You may want to ask your local vac dealer to see if you need to repair or replace. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Miele Red Star model S314. Cord reel is stuck. About three feet of cord is out. The rest of cord is jammed inside machine? How do I get to where the cord reel is?
ANSWER : It is actually simple when I tell you, Here we go…
.
.First, open the lid and take the bag, and hepa filter out of the machine.
.
.With a slot screwdriver, pry the hinges of the bag door out a little and take the bag door off.
.
.You should see one screw holding the black black panel, remove that. When that is out, you can pull the black panel off. It will give a little resistance to you, do not be afraid of breaking it, it will come off.
.
.Next you will see 4 or 5 screws down the holes there, remove all of them and the final remaining red piece will come off. When you pull this off, it will have both the cord rewinder and the motor assembly attached to it. It will be heavy becasue of the motor. Before you pull out the cord rewinder, just have a look at it closely and you may be able to just fix it without removing anything else.
.
.good luck with it.
