How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Carpet cleaners use a combination of clean solution, powerful scrubbing brushes and vacuum suction. Carpet cleaners inject a mixture of cleaning solution and water deep into your carpet fibres. Brushes then agitate, scrub and loosen the dirt and/or stain and then the powerful vacuum suction lifts it away.
Extraction carpet cleaning, also called hot water extraction, involves spraying the carpet with hot water using a spraying machine while simultaneously vacuuming the dislodged dirt and debris using a vacuum cleaner.
Carpet extractors are battery-powered or cord-electric. They remove the manual labor from carpet cleaning by applying water and chemical to the carpet, and then scrubbing and removing the dirty solution from the carpet.
The Comet™ self-contained carpet extractor is a compact machine with powerful brush agitation to clean carpets and quickly remove unwanted spots.
Yes, you should keep cleaning the carpet until the water is clear. This will ensure that your carpets are clean and free of dirt, dust, and other allergens. However, you should be careful not to scrub too hard or use too much water. Doing so can damage the carpet and lead to more stains in the future.
Although there is no definite answer, we estimate that professional carpet cleaning takes around 30 minutes for a room. Just keep in mind that it may take longer than this if your floors are stained or there is furniture you would like to be moved.
A carpet cleaner is best for short-term cleaning, and a carpet extractor is best for long-term cleaning. Carpet extractors are also the most useful choice if you haven`t cleaned your carpets in a long time, or use them very frequently. Carpet cleaners are best when the carpet is not used very much.
Deep cleaning is a great way to preserve your carpets for a long time, to prevent them from having to be replaced so soon. Carpet cleaning machines can cost the same as hiring in a professional but allow mums and dads to keep their carpets in tip top shape as often as they feel the need.
A carpet cleaner, also known as a carpet extractor or carpet shampooer, is designed to remove deeply embedded dirt and stains in carpets. For optimal results, the machines work as follows: Users pretreat the carpet by spraying it with a cleaning solution and letting it soak in, or dwell, for about 15 minutes.
Hot water extraction is better for carpets that are made out of natural fibers. Steam cleaning can cause the carpet fibers to shrink. However, this is less likely to happen if hot water is used. Many carpet manufacturers recommend that hot water extraction be used if the carpet is made out of natural fibers.
There are two types of vacuum motors available: two stage and three stage vacuum motors. Three stage vacuum motors are more powerful and require 2 cords, when carpet extractors equipped with two stage motors have less power and usually come with one cord. You can do a great job with either one.
Encapsulation carpet cleaning is the process of removing contaminants from carpeting using a chemical solution that contains acrylic polymers. These polymers attach themselves to soil particles in the carpet. Once attached, they break down the soil`s bond to the carpet fibers.
Clean your carpet with baking soda and vinegar

Simple and inexpensive, this old-fashioned trick works wonders to revive dilapidated carpet pile. First work in the baking soda with a stiff brush (rub it in deeply, working in all directions), then let it sit overnight so that it can fully absorb odours and bacteria.

Carpets that still look dirty or have stains reappear after cleaning is a result of something called wicking. This is due to over wetting the carpet, the backing, and pad which causes them to return back to the surface once dry.
In reality, carpets should dry in somewhere between 4-6 hours; however, and here`s the caveat – it`s vital that a carpet is dry within 24 hours. This is because after this time your carpet is in danger of attracting mould spores which will not only ruin your carpet, but be harmful to your health.
It is recommended that you try to stay off the freshly cleaned carpets until they are dry – about 6 hours. If you MUST walk over your damp carpet before it is dry use EXTREME caution. Where you transition from carpet to another hard surface, like tile or hardwood, can be very slippery.
The best method of cleaning carpets is usually steam cleaning, which removes over 90% of dirt and bacteria from carpeting. Dry cleaning carpeting is also effective for ensuring carpets are ready for foot traffic as quickly as possible.
In conclusion, when it comes to cleaning carpets, there are several methods available. Hot water extraction, dry cleaning, and bonnet cleaning are three of the most common methods used by professionals.
In that sense, should you need to perform a deep cleaning of upholstery, carpeting or other surfaces within a vehicle, a heated carpet extractor is the better option. For exterior work, you`ll want to invest in a machine with a high steam output volume. Smaller, less-powerful units are better suited for interior jobs.
A dust extractor is similar to a shop vac, but can move a larger volume of air. Dust extractors also have better filters, typically HEPA grade that traps airborne dust down to 0.3 microns. Consider it a portable dust collector that you can take with you to the job site!
Cut Pile– Cut pile carpeting is mostly found in residential homes. The fuzzy layer that cut pile provides, leaves a soft layer of cushion around your house that is hard to beat. One of its only downsides is, it can be difficult to clean.
Carpets with a longer pile length are the hardest to clean due to the dirt and stains being harder to reach than carpets with a shorter pile length. Different cleaning methods work better on some carpet fibers than others, so knowing what`s best for your carpet is the key to keeping it clean and looking its best.
Mix 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup borax, and 1/4 cup vinegar, then apply this paste to deep stains or heavily soiled sections of carpet. Allow the paste to sit on the carpet for several hours until it dries completely, then vacuum it away.
A typical “steam cleaning” carpet cleaner consumes over a gallon of water per minute. To clean 1,000 square feet of carpet, a typical steam cleaner will use approximately 60 to 120 gallons of water. This means that for every minute of cleaning, a gallon of water will be removed from the municipal water supply.

My carpet cleaner (bissell proheat plus) is not steaming, dispensing cleaner. Seems like there’s a little thingy that should be spinning or turning….. When I work a small area of carpet, it just leaves behind dry blobs of carpet gunk like pet hair. I had to use a carpet sweeper to clean up. FYI – I filled the cleaning fluid container and after trying to clean the carpet, it did empty out but the carpet isn’t wet. Any tips? The manual doesn’t help.
ANSWER : You need to replace the pump belt. Here is the belt you need:

I have a DC07 and the brush wasn’t rotating and I had no suction at the brush but perfect suction through the hose. I noticed a large build up of dog hair around the brush so I took off the cover plate and removed all the hair, cleaned inside the floor/brush housing and cleaned out the hose. I also cleaned the filter and removed the other air access cover and made sure that they were clear. I put everything back and the brush still doesn’t turn and there is still no suction through the bottom

Carpet stained recently cleaned my cream coloured carpet in my entrance hall with a carpet cleaning product, wet foamy spray type, ran out of this and found a part bottle of a different brand in my cupboard, used this to finish off however must be some sort of reaction and carpet gone a greenish colour i think (colour blind sorry ) any idea’s of any product that might restore my carpet, will try anything, nothing to loose. thank you Peter McGurk Goole East Yorks
ANSWER : Ok in the future try to have carpet cleaned only by a pro. For spot cleaning use white paper towels or dish towels and warm water. (ONLY WHITE) 99% of fabric is white and then dyed to color and if you use a color cloth you might pull the dye from the cloth into the carpet. Now what you can try is your basic dishwashing detergent like electrosal with warm water and a dishtowel. little at a time try to blot not rub. try AFTA if that doesnt work. wet the rag first with warm water. pour the afta on the wet rag not on the carpet.

Bissell ProHeat Clearview Steam Cleaner – need steps to clean the clear input area. I have removed the four screws and need to know how to finish the removal of the clear plastic input area.
ANSWER : For the clear outer nozzle, there are 2 screws holding it in place. Remove those, then from the bottom lift it up. Sometimes the seal holds it really tight and you may have to carefully pry on the sides until it loosens up. Then when you put it back on, at the top are 2 tabs, make sure they snap into place then lower the nozzle and put the 2 screws back in.

IRobot rumba 4000 seems to run ok and then starts making a kinda hi pitched growling noise and slows way down. it is very clean(blown clean with air compressor)sensors are clear ,newly installed well lubricated on ends of brush and beater bar, new battery. it seems like the wheel tracks may be dragging . i have cleaned and lubricated where i could on them but can’t find a way to totally remove and inspect wheel tracks.
ANSWER : It sounds like your Roomba’s brush gears are not working. Run the robot without the dust bin to see if the brushes are turning. If they are not, the robot will need to be replaced. Contact iRobot CS for support at (877) 855-8593.

Roomba keeps saying clean brushes yet are clean!
ANSWER : Make sure you take off the little cap at the end (the one that spins — just grab it and pull it straight off) and clean under it too. The rest of the brush may look perfectly clean but what happens is that hair gets stuck under spinning cap and, like a slowly growing washer, it pushes the whole brush toward the gear box. When it gets pushed over enough, the large yellow ring starts to rub against the side of the brush deck making it harder for the motor to turn the brush and you get that “remove and clean brushes” message.

I cleaned out my brush in the bottom front, cleaned out the small tubing going into the canister, and the canister itself. I also changed the filter.I snapped everything back into place, but Since then, it doesn’t seem to have any suction and there seems to be a space between the canister and the bottom of the vacumm where the canister sits. At that area, you can feel air coming out when trying to vacumm and it just doesn’t pick up, it seems to be just blowing stuff around.
ANSWER : You need to really look at it some thing is out of line you shooed not have
.any spaces in the top or bottom
.pull the canister back out and look at the pins that you lined up with the
.top and the canister you might have missed arrows that need to be lined

Carpet cleaning brush noise. When put in carpet cleaning mode, a loud noise comes from the brush bar area. We see no visible obstructions and have cleared threads and hair.
ANSWER : It’s likely that one of the brush roll bearings has worn out. This is not uncommon. I think you’ll find that you have to replace both the brush roll and the sole plate at the same time. Dyson sell them together as a kit.
