How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Next to the motor, the belt on your vacuum is just about the most important part of your vacuum. Without the belt to spin the brushroll, most vacuums won`t pick up on carpeting at all! If your vacuum uses a rubber belt, check it once a month for cracks, melting, and especially, slippage.
(All full-sized machines, upright vacuums and canister vacuums, typically have a belt.) A vacuum will still create suction with a bum belt, but without a rotating brush roller, it won`t collect much in the way of dirt and debris, especially on carpets.
With a bag, there`s little to no chance that your dust will wind up back on the floor or in your face. Better for allergy sufferers. Bags keep dust and allergens completely separate from the person who is doing the vacuuming. As a result, disposing of dust is much less likely to cause an allergic reaction.
Vacuum belts rotate the brush roller of a vacuum cleaner to lift embedded dirt and dust from carpet fibers. They connect the roller to the motor shaft to transfer power for spinning the roller. These vacuum cleaner belts are used as replacements for snapped or stretched belts that can no longer turn the roller.
Often, a belt breaks because the machine is running over the edge of a rug or other thick items, perhaps even the vacuum cord. This causes “snagging.” When this happens, the belt becomes stuck and usually overheats. Unfortunately, this results in immediate breakage.
The major types of vacuum belts are determined by their different shapes. As vacuum designs have improved over the years, new belt shapes have been developed to increase both their durability and their ability to transfer power from the vacuum`s motor.
In general, bagged models tend to work more efficiently than bagless vacuum cleaners because they have an extra layer of protection for their filtration system. If someone in your household lives with allergies or asthma, it`s in your best interest to choose a model that will filter out the air as best as possible.
All Kirby vacuums use the same size belt for the brush roller. This vac belt will fit every Kirby vacuum model roller brush, including: Avalir 2. Avalir.
If your vacuum runs but isn`t always picking up dirt, it might be time to change the belt. Consumer Reports` experts reveal how fast and simple it is to install a new belt which can save you a trip to the repair shop.
Full-grain leather is the best quality and most durable and is the best leather for belts. The material maintains its natural character and develops a beautiful leather patina as it ages. Corrected grain leathers also make good quality belts, but they are less unique.
Today, most serpentine belts are expected to last anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Some belts can last significantly longer than this, while others give out before 60,000 miles. Make sure to check your owner`s manual to find out the recommended belt replacement time frame.
Vacuum bagging is used broadly in the composites industry as well. Carbon fibre fabric and fibreglass, along with epoxies and resins are popular materials laminated together with a vacuum bag operation.
The bottom line. Many vacuum brands recommend changing the bag before it becomes full, at least every three months. The purpose of changing the vacuum bag when you need to is so that your vacuum cleaner is working at an optimal level.
If the belt isn`t too dirty, use a dry rag as too much water might damage it. Next, pour saddle soap or leather cleaner on the other clean rag to remove any tough dirt on your belt. Keep going until you`re satisfied with the way your belt looks. Don`t rub too hard and only wipe along the grain.
Broken belts in tires usually come from defects during the manufacturing process. However, they can occur from improper mounting, degraded and aged rubber, extreme heat, oversteering, and debris.
Rough Roads and High Speeds

Every hit and bump a tire experiences contributes to its degradation. Continued abuse will weaken the belts to the point that they begin to fail. Avoid gravel roads and hitting potholes at high speeds as much as possible.

There is no one-size-fits-all belt sizing formula. Belts fit differently depending on user sizes and gear combinations. For instance, gun belts measure different standards than a regular size guide due to the flexibility of various holsters. The intended use influences your choice of shapes and even material.
If too much hair, string, or lint is caught in the brushroll, the brushroll can get stuck. If the brushroll is stuck, it will put too much strain on the belt and may cause the belt to break. Remove the brushroll and clean out any debris from the bearings. After replacing the brushroll, make sure that it turns freely.
Bag vacuums, as the name suggests, places all the dirt and debris the vacuum collects into a bag made of paper or cloth. When the bag gets full, you remove it from the vacuum cleaner and just toss it into the trash. However, bagless vacuum cleaners dump debris into a cup or a tank that you then empty into the garbage.
When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust. Regular filters can`t remove these harmful particulates and this puts the people in your home at risk.
Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
Bagless vacuums can require additional filters. They are costly and most people don`t clean or change them. If you don`t clean or change these filters, the vacuum loses suction.
Belt repair can be complex, as each job is custom and completed by hand. Often, our craftsmen must sew through thick layers of leather to make a delicate repair.

Windtunnel belt I have a new Hoover Windtunnel canister. The belt keeps coming off. It happened a couple weeks ago (several times after putting the belt back on) so I assumed I might need a new belt as it might have dried out at the store. I ordered new belts and today I used it for about an hour and the belt came off again, twice. There doesn’t seem to be anything to hold the belt on the stem as it seems to slip off. I have tried it centered, to the left and to the right….can you help. I am v

Hoover bagless cannister 3765 – belt on power head slips off spindle. bought new belts – same problem. is this a design problem or can it be fixed? I don’t want to take it to a repair shop 100 miles away and have them just put on a new belt. saw idea of smaller belt – what number? couldn’t find suggested royal 104425001 belt.
ANSWER : I would not recommend a smaller belt. You will only wear the motor. This model series power nozzle needs to have a metal clip installed near the belt on the brush roller housing. I know that most of them left the factory without it. Remove the cover to see if one is ther. if not have your dealer send you a clip or a housing with one on it.

Hoover WindTunnel Self-Propelled V Belt
ANSWER : I had this same problem with the V belt on my Hoover Vaccuum..
.There are three (3) basic things that will cause the brush roll not to spin..
.1. When handle is upright, brush roll is OFF..2. When switch is set for HARD surface, brush roll is OFF..3. Broken/worn FLAT belt or V Belt, brush roll will not spin.
.
.I noticed that the brush roll was not spinning when my vacuum was set for CARPET. After removing the cover I noticed that the V belt was loose, I thought the belt was worn so I purchased a correct replacement belt and installed it, but the new belt was also loose and when I turned the large flat belt pulley it did not turn the V belt pulley at the same time..
.I double checked the surface setting and I had the vacuum switch set for carpet, but still when I released the handle out of the upright position the brush roll would still not spin..
.My aggravation finally led me to this posting on FixYa’s website..
.The first thing I did was checked the screw to the left of the V belt as suggested by ejmjr5 and this did nothing to solve the problem or create more tension on the V belt, even when the upright handle was not in the upright position..
.After playing around with the surface setting control switch/nob I notice that when I moved the switch out of the HARD surface setting and over to CARPET, I had thought that the switch was set for CARPET as it visually appeared, but I was not pushing the switch over hard enough to click it into the CARPET setting mode..
.VOILA, the brush roll now spins correctly even though the V belt seams to be too loose for the pulley..
.You really have to force the switch into the CARPET setting. Be sure that you hear the switch/nob click into place..
.Now you can effectively clean up after that hangover of a party!.
.Burp!

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

I’m using (or WAS using) a Eureka ”the boss” model 8803. The belt broke, no biggie, so I replaced it with a Eureka model U belt, the problem is when I put the new belt on and turn on the vaccuum, the belt breaks again. I am also having trouble getting the brush roller to fit right when the belt is in place. I can’t find any sharp edges that would cut the belt, nor can I find where any small bits may have broken. Anyone have a solution for me?
ANSWER : First, make sure you have the right belt, second, i am thinking that you are not lineing the roller up right, it will only fit one way. look at the ends of the roller and the grooves where it slides in, you should be able to see clearly how it goes.
