How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

For most models, the lowest setting is optimal for bare floors or thin carpeting. The middle setting offers the best suction for slightly fuller carpets. The highest setting is best for plush carpets or area rugs.
Suction Power

This is an indication of how good the vacuum cleaner is to clean – i.e. the work to be done. The suction power is measured in Watt (W) and is typically between 250 W and 450 W for machines with 1 motor.

The level you set your vacuum depends on the height of your carpet. For bare floors, use the lowest or bare floor setting, for short and medium pile carpets use a medium setting and finally, for plush carpets use the highest setting.
All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
Suction cups adhere best to smooth, non-porous surfaces such as tile, glass, fiberglass or metal. To ensure a firm bond, surfaces should be totally free of dirt and soap film before attaching the suction cup.
Next, you need to consider suction power. Typically expressed in Pa (pascals), this is a measurement of how powerful the motor is inside a robot vacuum. A good number to look for here is around 2,000Pa or above for an effective clean.
Most carpet cleaning pros say they use a range of 100-400 psi for regular carpeting, but some use a psi as high as 500 for standard jobs. For more delicate fabrics, such as thinning cotton or nylon, you may need to go as low as 50 psi.
While extreme suction power may offer peace of mind to homeowners who want to feel confident that their vacuums are effective at sucking up dirt and germs, it can be very damaging to your carpet and should be avoided! For high pile and premium soft carpet, be sure to avoid vacuums with concentrated or sealed suction.
Suction pressure should be kept at less than 200 mmHg in adults. It should be set at 80 mmHg to 120 mmHg in neonates.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Max(4000 PA): It can deeply clean the place that needs cleaning, dust cleaning is up 80%, garbage collection is up 30%, and the cleaning times are up to 80 minutes.
The basic formula F=PxA is used to calculate the force of the suction cup with: F is holding force (or the vacuum force of the suction cup) P is pressure.
The typical range of Pa for a regular robot vacuum cleaner is around 2500 to 3000 Pa. The higher the value of Pa, the greater the force lifting the debris off the floor.
The maximum suction height depends on the saturated vapor pressure of the fluid and therefore the temperature and ambient pressure. The maximum theoretical suction height of the water, at sea level, is about 10.33 meters.
Low intermittent suction is usually ordered. Low range on the suction device is from 0 to 80 mmHg. Starting between 40-60 mmHg is recommended. The suction level should not exceed 80 mmHg.
Suction pressure is used when a fluid is being drawn into a system, vacuum pressure is used when the pressure is measured with respect to the absolute vacuum, and negative gauge pressure is used when the pressure at a specific point needs to be measured relative to the atmospheric pressure.
If suction pressure changes, the discharge pressure will also change. Thus, if the suction vessel or tank level is high, the discharge pressure will be higher than if the vessel or tank is nearly empty. Fig.
Because the maximum theoretical vacuum at sea level is 29.92 in. -Hg, actual pump capabilities are based on and compared to this theoretical value. Depending on pump design, the vacuum limit ranges from 28 to 29.5 in. -Hg or about 93% or 98% of the maximum theoretical value.
Suction pressure should be kept at less than 200 mmHg in adults. It should be set at 80 mmHg to 120 mmHg in neonates. [3] The catheter size used for suction should be less than 50% of the internal diameter of the endotracheal tube.
The minimum suction power (12,000 Pa) is engineered for routine cleaning and removing small particles. The 5-layer HEPA filtration system captures up to 99.99% of ultrafine particles, be it pet fur/dander, long human hair, pollen, dust mites and other allergens.

Can you advise which setting should be used on different floors, ie hard floors and carpets, theres 2 different settings and I don’t know which setting should be used on the different floors
ANSWER : Turn the machine on and look at the bottom. Turn to the two settings. The setting that stops the platten wheel from moving is for hard wood floors. If you cant tell, then setting 1 is most likely for carpets and 2 is for hard wood floors. Your machine is primarily a carpet vacuum cleaner, so 1 should be for carpets.

Proteam Pro force 1500xp Upright vacuum… When I switch to the carpet setting I have no suction power but the beater bar is turning. If I switch back to the floors setting, the suction is excellent. Wondering if the problem is in the on/off switch?
ANSWER : Just undo the screws on the front part of the switch assembly, carefully check all the leads to the switch. Mine slide off all the time as the switch is poorly designed and subject to damage when the darn thing tips over (easily!!!) new switches are about 7.50 USD.

I have an electrolux renaisence vacuum. the brush in the floor attachment turns but I have no suction. When I change to bare floor option on the handle the brush stops turning (correct) but I still have no suction. The lights on the handle showing –floor, carpet, high and low all work.
ANSWER : Sounds like you have a clog, either in the hose or the inlet by the brush roll.

My eureka optima upright bagless vaccum has VERY low suction using the floor part. the hose has excellent suction. i removed the little translucent door underneath and there were no blockages, i cleaned the brushroll thoroughly and that hasnt helped either. i know this probably isnt recommended but i turned it on to the floor setting with the brushroll off and stuck my fingers up the intake as far as i could, the suction was good further up but it just seems to stop down at the base. because i s
ANSWER : I will try and help here. Is the sole plate on the bottom of the vacuum complety on and there are no visible cracks along the seam where it meets the body? This is the usual cause for this. Onc you take of the plate to access the roller and brushes, if this is not put on correctl you will lose suction. Look for any other openenings that can cause a air leak.

When i set it on carpet instead of bare floor it is hard to push when i vacume (when i turn nob it only has two settings floor and carpet no high pile or low pile)
ANSWER : Hi there,

Sorry to hear you’re having difficulties using your DC14 on this particular carpet. You may want to contact your carpet manufacturer to check it’s suitable for cleaning with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a revolving brush. Manufacturers sometimes recommend cleaning certain types of carpeting using suction only.

My Hoover Windtunnel does not clean carpet. The machine keeps grabbing the carpet. It appears that even with the switch set for carpet, the machine keeps acting as though it were set for a hard floor. How can I fix it?
ANSWER : Move the height adjustment up a little

On our new carpet (which is not that thick but thicker than the old) I can’t set the carpet thickness high enough. The suction really grabs the carpet and bogs down my self-propelled wind-tunnel Hoover. I then have to push down on the handle to tilt the front up. The thickness setting is as high as it will go. Is there some way that I can further adjust this. The machine is about eight years old.
ANSWER : I can help you out only if you will let me know the front width of the machine. Alongwith the height which you wan’t to give raise. KIndly give the width and elevation in cms.
