How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
Low suction on Miele vacuum apparatuses is almost always caused by user error, with most being related to an inappropriately installed bag or a clog due to the powerful suction these machines have often making us think the pencil, measuring spoon, hairpin or other large obstructions are okay to suck up.
If the grease or active charcoal filter of your ventilation hood(s) is saturated, the red LED indicator will light up. Your filter should then be cleaned or replaced as soon as possible.
This means that the bag will lose the proper airflow required to let the incoming air escape. As the airflow is restricted, the suction dies down too. So check, change, and replace the vacuum cleaner bag often.
Suction power is low

A telltale sign that the bag is full is if your vacuum cleaner`s suction power is not as powerful. If you`re noticing dirt and debris left behind despite running the vacuum over a few times, it`s time to switch out your bag.

Miele`s vacuum bags should last you between two and three months. Combining the powerful suction of Miele`s bagged vacuum cleaners and a host of effective attachments, you`ll notice a huge difference in your cleaning abilities.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
Before we go any further, let`s remember that all Miele Vacuum Cleaners share some basic features: All Miele Vacuums come with a Quiet 1200 W motor. That means They all have the same suction power. They are all made of ABS Plastic, which makes them extremely durable but very lightweight.
The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle). Some manufacturers show the results from measurements made at the suction of the actual vacuum cleaner.
It should be changed once every three months, or every four bags. The exhaust filter, which could be either the Miele Active AirClean SF-AA50 Filter or the Miele HEPA AirClean SF-HA50 Filter, should be changed once every 50 hours of use.
Low intermittent suction is usually ordered. Low range on the suction device is from 0 to 80 mmHg. Starting between 40-60 mmHg is recommended. The suction level should not exceed 80 mmHg.
Suction lift in a pump refers to the pressure (negative pressure) on the suction side of the pump. The pressure can be measured from the centre line of the hydraulic part of the pump down to the water surface on the suction side of the pump.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
What is a Good Suction Power for a Vacuum Cleaner? An upright cordless vacuum cleaner should have at least 100 air watts to effectively clean a variety of floor surfaces, with the best Samsung vacuum cleaner reaching up to 210W*.
The level you set your vacuum depends on the height of your carpet. For bare floors, use the lowest or bare floor setting, for short and medium pile carpets use a medium setting and finally, for plush carpets use the highest setting.
see less The amount of time it takes to fill a bag greatly varies. A bag typically lasts about a quarter of a year but you may have to change your bag more frequently if you have pets or have high traffic through your house (i.e. people wearing shoes in the house, etc.). But, a good estimate is about 3 months per bag.
The bag is reusable. It needs better instructions though. For instance, it`s washable but if you put it in the machine you`ll ruin it as the plastic part is fragile. It clogs with dust so every other use or so you do need to wash it to keep your suction and other filters from clogging.
Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
Miele Washing Machines are vigorously tested to last the equivalent of 20 years use. Miele Washing Machines are ecological and consume only the amount of water and electricity needed for excellent cleaning and rinsing results.
Excellent Longevity

Most dishwashers will have an average lifespan of around 5 – 10 years but a Miele could last up to 20 years.

Max(4000 PA): It can deeply clean the place that needs cleaning, dust cleaning is up 80%, garbage collection is up 30%, and the cleaning times are up to 80 minutes.
The suction is 22Kpa which is very powerful, easily to pick up the hair, dust and sand in a short time.
When compared with Miele C1 series vacuums, C2 series are slightly smaller and easier to store and transport across multi-level homes. They also offer operate at a slightly lower volume, with an average noise output of 55 to 67 decibels.
The Miele Complete C3 is a better overall canister vacuum than the Miele Classic C1. The Complete C3 has a better performance on all surface types, it`s more maneuverable, and it comes with a HEPA filter.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

While vacuuming the red light for the bag of the vacuum came on and the vacuum stopped. The bag was no where near full so I replaced it with a new bag – same problem. It vaccumes for a minute or then stops with bag light on. It is the correct bag for the machine – so what’s the problem?
ANSWER : I’m assuming this is the Epic 6500 or similar model.
.Detach the hose, turn vacuum on. If it runs, place palm of hand against inport hole. If it shuts off the problem is with either the control valve setting or the control valve assembly itself.
.For cvs, turn dial on top of vacuum all the way to the largest dot, and try above test again. If that doesn’t work, then it’s the CVA. It needs to be cleaned or replaced, which is an in shop job. Fro repair, take it to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store. I recommend a full clean and service to remove any dust/dirt from the motor, fan assembly, and other internal parts.
.
.Another problem, which relates to the dial setting, is that fine dust will quickly clog the pores of the bag, resulting in the machine “thinking” the bag is full. Turning the dial to the proper setting helps get the bag fuller. The middle setting is the normal setting, and is for areas without fine dust and sand.

Full Bag Shut-off Comes on With New Bag and No Hose
ANSWER : The control valve has gone bad. This is the dial that you move on the top of the vacuum that has little indents on it.
You cannot do anything to bypass this problem from outside the machine.
This is not a repair that you can make yourself. You should look in your local yellow pages for Aerus (new name for electrolux) under vacuum cleaners, or go to www.aerusonline.com and find your local dealer. It is not too expensive to have fixed, it is a common issue with later model electroux vacuums.

.
.You can try a test to see if it the valve. Remove the bag from the vacuum, look at the back of the bag holder near the motor, in the upper right or left depending on your model. You will see a very small hole 1/16 or an inch or so. Put a piece of tape of some sort to close off the hole. Replace the bag, turn on the vacuum, if it is a bad valve, the tape will override the bag full action, and the vacuum will run.
.
.It is not advisable to run the vacuum this way since it will overheat, damage the thermostat, and can destroy the motor. A motor will cost over $200.00, the valve can be replaced for a lot less….

Electrolux 2100 new bag placed full bag indicator appears
ANSWER : It appears you have a bad control valve. My suggestion is to take it to your nearest Aerus dealer and have them replace it for you. You can find them by going to aerusonline.com and use their dealer locater. It shouldn’t cost much to replace. You can disable it, but I don’t suggest it. It is in place to protect you motor, and assuming you bought this machine new, you are aware of how much they cost. If you can’t find a dealer locally, call the closest one and they may ship you the part. If you have to do it yourself, here is how. Open the front of the canister and remove the bag. As you are looking.at the front of the unit, there are two vinyl covered strips that run.the length of the unit. Pull forward on these strips and then pull out.so that the vinyl separates from the plastic underneath. Now grab the.plastic strip with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull towards the.front of the canister. These can be tough if the machine has never been.opened up before, but pull as hard as you need to, to slide the strip.out. Once both strips are out, turn the machine over, pull out on the.sides of the bottom of the unit, and lift up. The bottom should come off.relatively easily, and everything will be exposed. The control valve.rests under the bag housing, since the machine is now upside down. Pull the bag housing out, and the control valve will be right there. It’s circular with vacuum lines connected to it. Just pull it out and move the vacuum lines to the new one, but be sure you get them in the right position!. It won’t work if you don’t. I.hope this helps. Good Luck!!

I have a new Kenmore magic bued and I am about to change bags for the first time. Trying to do this the clip that is supposed to hod the bag close to the whole keeps coming off when I replace it and close the lid, turn on the vac the sucction is very low and it keeps showing the bag is full which is not true / what is going wrong here ?

Thanks so much for supporting,

Beba

ANSWER : Sorry to hear that you are having problems with you Kenmore Magic Blue.

There is a so-called “bag full indicator”, which will only turn red if it got some major blockage. This is the reason why there is no power suction.

The “full bag sensor is just a spring mechanism that springs closed when there is a blockage. Remove the bag and look for clogs. When using it, check the bag and change it when full, not go by the “bag full indicator.”

Good luck, I hope this helps.
