How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The motor filter is located behind the Electrolux S Bag. To reach it, simply push the bag to the side. To open up the motor filter compartment, press downward to release the locking mechanism and pull forward to access the motor filter.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

To remove the tight hose sock you need a 3ft long card board tube that you can slide the hose through. As you slide it through you lift the sock up on to the tube. Put it back on the same way. Put it on the tube and slide it off as you pull the hose through the tube.
Drain Pump Guard Filter

Some Electrolux models feature a drain pump filter. It is usually located behind a small panel at the bottom right of the machine. You should be able to open the panel with your fingers or a flathead screwdriver. Before unscrewing the filter, make sure to put a towel down.

Remove the filter and clear any fluff or objects and clean the filter under a running tap. Put the filter back and turn clockwise. Make sure you tighten the filter correctly to prevent leakages. Close the drain cover.
It`s important to fully remove the hose before you clean it. It`s not possible to give the hose a deep clean when it`s still attached to the vacuum, as water should never be near the vacuum body. One of the things we love about Shark vacuum cleaners is how easy they are to disassemble.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

I have an electrolux epic 6500 sr. The change bag light came on, I changed the bag, now it won’t run properly. If the bag is out and the hose attached it will run or if the bag is in and the hose is off it will run, but not if the bag is in and the hose is attached. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : First, if it runs without a bag, there’s a problem with the bag lock-out switch or wiring. This needs to be replaced/repaired by an authorized Aerus Electrolux technician.
.
.First, turn dial on top of vacuum counter-clockwise so the smallest dot lines up with the arrow. See if it stays on. If not, detach hose and turn vacuum on. Place palm of hand over intake. If it turns off, it’s possible that the tubes connecting to the CVA are clogged and simply need cleaned. This is most often caused by using “made to fit” Electrolux bags. Dust is sucked through the bags and into the motor compartment of the machine. All interior parts get covered in dust and need to be cleaned. If this is the cause, the vacuum is best cleaned and repaired at an authorized Aerus Electrolux store. If the vacuum shuts off, or won’t turn on before placing hand over the intake, it’s probable the control valve assembly is bad and needs replaced.

Another cause is an overheated motor due to clogged screen at back of bag well, full or clogged bag, dirty afterfilter, bad wiring/connections, clogged hose, clogged power head, or bad motor. It depends largely on the type and model of cleaner. Clogged wands are also a possibility, but unlikely.

Check and clean screen at back of bag well.

Replace bag. Make sure it’s a genuine Electrolux bag made by Home Solutions.

Check and replace afterfilter if necessary. These should be replaced after every six bags.

Broken and worn wiring connections are often found in the hose ends due to abuse and normal wear and tear. You can check the continuity of the hose using a continuity tester or multi-tester. If a multi-tester, turn dial to one of the Ohm settings. Place one probe into one of the terminals on the end of the hose. This will be referred to as T1. Touch the other probe to each of the terminals/connections on the other end of the hose. These will be T3 and T4. One of them should read zero, the other should read infinity. Repeat this with the other terminal, which will be T2.

Drop a marble in one end of hose and let it roll through. If it doesn’t roll through, the hose is clogged and needs to be cleared. Plug hose into the exhaust port of the vacuum, place other end in the in port. Turn vacuum on. This provides a blowing and sucking action which should clear the hose.
Detach hose from power nozzle (PN). Drop a marble into the wand end of PN. If it rolls through, it’s clear. If not, there’s probably a clog behind the brush where the intake opening is. You may be able to reach this through wand end with needle nose pliers, or either end with a knitting/crochet needle or a bent coat hanger.

If none of these “fixes” provide the answer to the problem, it should be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for diagnosis. Repairs or checks involving disassembly of the vacuum should always be done by an authorized Aerus Electrolux service technician.

The store nearest you can be found by following the instructions at the below listed link:

My vac has lost suction. When I vacuum it picks up very little, but when I remove the wand hose it has good suction. We have cleaned both filters, checked for blockage in all hoses & cleaned the beater bar brush. All to no avail. Is it the motor? Or is there a blockage deep in the vac somewhere? We’re debating repair versus buying a new one. Hope you can help. Thanks.

How to remove duct hose on model U1550 Lux Classic upright vac.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

When I flip the switch on my sebo x1 upright, a red light comes to the brush and bag icons. However, I cleaned out the hose and checked to make sure there is no obstruction from the brush to the hose also, or from the hose to the bag. It is clear that juice is coming to the vacuum, but there is no sign of life except the two red lights.
ANSWER : Thanks for contacting fixya. You should pull out the bag and reset the machine. You should take all the user replaceable items. And turn it on. You will get lot of errors. Then turn the machine off. Put back all the accessories and the bag. Turn you machine on. This will solve your problem.
