How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

To open the bag, you simply pull the zip apart. You don`t let the air in via the valve. All vacuum storage bags will leak in air over time – Neusu vacuum bags have been tested to keep out most of the air, with only minimal leakage, after over four months.
The question is simple, but the answer is not. Obviously, there are different sizes of vacuum storage bags, but the real problem is that there isn`t a standard acceptance of what constitutes a particular size, so a Neusu Large might have the same dimensions as another manufacturer`s `Extra Large`.
I used drawstring kitchen bags, but large black garbage bags would work very well, as they are less prone to tearing.
Step 1 : Folding

That is the most efficient way to use vacuum bag! This flattens the bag, allowing it to take up much less space in your suitcase. While folding your clothes a certain way can be helpful to save space, our vacuum bag for travel is an even better solution to fit everything you need for your trip.

Neglect your vacuum filter bags, and you`ll swiftly lose suction power. This, in turn, places unnecessary strain on your vacuum`s motor. Eventually, your vacuum will become a lot more difficult to maneuver, not to mention less effective at cleaning your rugs, carpeting, or other surfaces.
So how do you reuse vacuum sealer bags and rolls? You simply need to cut the old seal line and wipe the new one clean. Ensure no grease, oil, or food has affected the new seal line. There should also be enough space at the top of the bag to still get a strong seal.
The Full Dust Bag Indicator in On

It is often recommended, however, that dust bags are replaced when they`re around two thirds full or once a month. Daily and extensive use of vacuum cleaners will create a need to replace dust bags more frequently.

Locate the model number. This will often appear on the box or the back of the vacuum cleaner, hidden by cords and hoses. Once you have this information, contact a local store that carries vacuum cleaner bags and provide the associate with the make, model and model number of your vacuum cleaner.
Many vacuum brands recommend changing the bag before it becomes full, at least every three months. The purpose of changing the vacuum bag when you need to is so that your vacuum cleaner is working at an optimal level.
– Fold or roll each item into the bag

Thoroughly dry your laundry, then fold or roll each piece of clothing into the bag. Be wary of how you fold your clothes. Most prefer to roll their clothes when packing them in a vacuum storage bag because of fewer creases when taken out.

Can vacuum storage bags be reused? Yes. Vacuum storage bags can be used again and again.
Other brands of vacuum seal bags are incompatible with other brands of vacuum sealers. FoodSaver bags, for example, are designed exclusively for use with FoodSaver units. OutOfAir bags, on the other hand, are 100% compatible with all heat-seal vacuum sealer machines.
A vacuum sealer removes the air from the space around your food and then uses a heated seal bar to fuse the sides of the bag, preventing the air from leaking back into the bag. Exposure to air will spoil food or allow it to stale over time, so this process eliminates that threat.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
Without the bag the fine dust will go through the filter and blow back into your room. Vac with a HEPA cartridge filter: You do not need a collection bag. Vac with a foam sleeve: Some of our smaller vacs come with a foam sleeve and a collection bag. For these vacs, you must use the collection bag with the foam sleeve.
A senior test project leader stated that one of his top tips for lengthening a vacuum`s lifespan is “Don`t let the bag or bin get filled to the brim, which can clog the machine.” In addition to the extra work, dust escaping from a reused bag tends to go right back into the motor, causing damage.
There are different types of vacuum bags. The most common ones are made from nylon or polyethylene. They are transparent, and they are not reusable.
A full vacuum bag can also cause the motor to overheat and eventually fail, resulting in costly repair expenses or the replacement of a new vacuum. If you are using an upright vac with a belt-driven system, a full bag will increase the amount of force required to spin the brushroll, which can damage the belt.
Unplug the vacuum, remove the vacuum bag, and place a piece of duct tape over the suction opening. For dirt and residue, gently wash the vacuum cleaner bag with soapy water, rinse, and let air dry. If the bag is machine washable, throw it in the washer instead.
On average, a vacuum-sealed product under freezing conditions can last up to 5-6 months or even 1-2 years, depending on your freezer capacity. On the other hand, refrigerated vacuum-sealed products can last up to 1 to 2 weeks.
If you don`t need to treat a large amount of water at once, bag filters may be the more economical option – and you can also expect to reduce waste and disposal costs, since many bag filters can be cleaned and reused rather than discarded altogether.
They are not universal. There are two types of vacuum bags: channeled and non channeled. The channeled bags are more expensive and work with sealers which are more affordable such as seal-a-meal and foodsaver type sealers which are generally meant for home use.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
Most cleaning experts will tell you to vacuum your floors once or twice a week depending on how much foot traffic those floors are getting. Cotter says that high-traffic areas should be vacuumed twice weekly, as these areas have a higher level of dirt, and vacuuming this frequently will prevent matting.

Vaccum Bag How do I change the vaccum bag? I no longer have the booklet. I keep hearing about a zipper. I can’t find a zipper. There is sliding piece of plastic at the top. My bag is full, and I need to change it…Help!
ANSWER : Slide the plastic piece off the cloth bag and open the top. Looking down into the cloth bag, you will see the old bag. It is secured to the machine near the top. You will find the cardboard collar about a third of the way down. Remove it carefull. Now, stand BEHIND the machine and put your knee against the back of the handle and taking the new bag, open the hole in the cardboard collar and insert the bag into the cloth bag and put the cardboard collar onto the handle fitting. It helps to put the lower part of the hole on first and then press the top of the collar onto the handle fitting. The idea of standing behind with your knee against the handle is so that as you attach the bag, you will be pushing against your knee which will steady the machine and allow you to use the required force to complete the action. Once completed, fold the top of the paper bag down, so that when you replace the top slider, the paper bag is NOT clamped between the cloth bag and the slider.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

Bag was full, changed it, the unit now turns off
ANSWER : Try dialing the control valve to the mid way position. If the unit still shuts down with the bag full light on you have a damaged control valve under the dial on the top of the vac.
This valve failure is common in this model and can only be repaired by someone with original AERUS Electrolux repair parts, generally at an AERUS repair shop.

While vacuuming the red light for the bag of the vacuum came on and the vacuum stopped. The bag was no where near full so I replaced it with a new bag – same problem. It vaccumes for a minute or then stops with bag light on. It is the correct bag for the machine – so what’s the problem?
ANSWER : I’m assuming this is the Epic 6500 or similar model.
.Detach the hose, turn vacuum on. If it runs, place palm of hand against inport hole. If it shuts off the problem is with either the control valve setting or the control valve assembly itself.
.For cvs, turn dial on top of vacuum all the way to the largest dot, and try above test again. If that doesn’t work, then it’s the CVA. It needs to be cleaned or replaced, which is an in shop job. Fro repair, take it to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store. I recommend a full clean and service to remove any dust/dirt from the motor, fan assembly, and other internal parts.
.
.Another problem, which relates to the dial setting, is that fine dust will quickly clog the pores of the bag, resulting in the machine “thinking” the bag is full. Turning the dial to the proper setting helps get the bag fuller. The middle setting is the normal setting, and is for areas without fine dust and sand.

I have an electrolux epic 6500 sr. The change bag light came on, I changed the bag, now it won’t run properly. If the bag is out and the hose attached it will run or if the bag is in and the hose is off it will run, but not if the bag is in and the hose is attached. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : First, if it runs without a bag, there’s a problem with the bag lock-out switch or wiring. This needs to be replaced/repaired by an authorized Aerus Electrolux technician.
.
.First, turn dial on top of vacuum counter-clockwise so the smallest dot lines up with the arrow. See if it stays on. If not, detach hose and turn vacuum on. Place palm of hand over intake. If it turns off, it’s possible that the tubes connecting to the CVA are clogged and simply need cleaned. This is most often caused by using “made to fit” Electrolux bags. Dust is sucked through the bags and into the motor compartment of the machine. All interior parts get covered in dust and need to be cleaned. If this is the cause, the vacuum is best cleaned and repaired at an authorized Aerus Electrolux store. If the vacuum shuts off, or won’t turn on before placing hand over the intake, it’s probable the control valve assembly is bad and needs replaced.

Another cause is an overheated motor due to clogged screen at back of bag well, full or clogged bag, dirty afterfilter, bad wiring/connections, clogged hose, clogged power head, or bad motor. It depends largely on the type and model of cleaner. Clogged wands are also a possibility, but unlikely.

Check and clean screen at back of bag well.

Replace bag. Make sure it’s a genuine Electrolux bag made by Home Solutions.

Check and replace afterfilter if necessary. These should be replaced after every six bags.

Broken and worn wiring connections are often found in the hose ends due to abuse and normal wear and tear. You can check the continuity of the hose using a continuity tester or multi-tester. If a multi-tester, turn dial to one of the Ohm settings. Place one probe into one of the terminals on the end of the hose. This will be referred to as T1. Touch the other probe to each of the terminals/connections on the other end of the hose. These will be T3 and T4. One of them should read zero, the other should read infinity. Repeat this with the other terminal, which will be T2.

Drop a marble in one end of hose and let it roll through. If it doesn’t roll through, the hose is clogged and needs to be cleared. Plug hose into the exhaust port of the vacuum, place other end in the in port. Turn vacuum on. This provides a blowing and sucking action which should clear the hose.
Detach hose from power nozzle (PN). Drop a marble into the wand end of PN. If it rolls through, it’s clear. If not, there’s probably a clog behind the brush where the intake opening is. You may be able to reach this through wand end with needle nose pliers, or either end with a knitting/crochet needle or a bent coat hanger.

If none of these “fixes” provide the answer to the problem, it should be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for diagnosis. Repairs or checks involving disassembly of the vacuum should always be done by an authorized Aerus Electrolux service technician.

I have a new Kenmore magic bued and I am about to change bags for the first time. Trying to do this the clip that is supposed to hod the bag close to the whole keeps coming off when I replace it and close the lid, turn on the vac the sucction is very low and it keeps showing the bag is full which is not true / what is going wrong here ?

Thanks so much for supporting,

Beba

ANSWER : Sorry to hear that you are having problems with you Kenmore Magic Blue.

There is a so-called “bag full indicator”, which will only turn red if it got some major blockage. This is the reason why there is no power suction.

The “full bag sensor is just a spring mechanism that springs closed when there is a blockage. Remove the bag and look for clogs. When using it, check the bag and change it when full, not go by the “bag full indicator.”

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Hi, I have a pre-lit christimas tree and the top section the plastic end that inserts into the previous section is broke. the company that provided the tree I guess is no longer in business. any idea how you would fix this? The top tilts because a piece of the plastic of is missing on the piece that inserts into the previous section..
ANSWER : Find a piece of metal pipe with an interior diameter the size of the stem. Cut it long enough to cover the plastic fitting completely and press it over the old one. Put the upper section in position and fill the missing part with shards of wood – hammer them in place. Lastly just tape everything over.

Bag full indication comes on; changed bag; still wont run.
ANSWER : Turn the knob on the top of the vacuum all the way to the right and try it again
