How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your dyson vacuum isn`t turning on, don`t panic – there are a couple possible causes. It could simply be that the vacuum overheated and shut itself off. If that is the case, wait 24 hours and turn it back on. However, another problem with dysons are failed power switches.
Fix your Dyson brush bar

Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.

Lack of power, a bad power cord, failed drive motor or broken wires in the vacuum hose can prevent the vacuum cleaner from starting. Make sure the electrical outlet that you`re using for the vacuum cleaner works. Try using a different outlet if you suspect that the outlet you`re using is dead.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine off and back on.
When your Dyson no longer powers on even after charging the most likely cause is a damaged battery. This means the battery will no longer hold a charge and will need to be replaced. Once a new battery is purchased you can learn how to replace it by visiting our battery replacement page here.
The brush roll or its bearings may be clogged with hair, threads or dirt. Make sure they are clean and the roll spins. The belt may also have slipped because it was loose. Check the fit of the new belt when it is installed.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
Common signs include poor fuel efficiency, difficulty pressing the brake pedal, oil leaking under the engine, and the AC not working.

To reset the machine, turn the power off (using either the power button on the remote or the Main body), wait 60 seconds and then turn back on.
Over time, all batteries are subject to degradation. So if your run time has declined when the machine is not in Max / Boost mode, it might be time to buy a new battery. All our machines come with a 2-year initial warranty that includes the battery.

Chain saw starts runs, bur saw won’t start next time it is needed, craftsman chain saw
ANSWER : Steam vacuum? no clue but on your chain saw make sure you check the choke. it would explain why it wouldn’t start again.

Won’t start. My son was using the vacuum & Didn’t change the bag. The vacuum was making the full bag smell, but the light was’t on & it didn’t stop. I stopped him, changed the bag, checked the filter, closed the compartments & turned on the vacuum. Nothing happened. I checked to be sure that it was plugged in, that wasn’t the problem. I’ve let the vacuum “rest” for several days, It still won’t start. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : There is a reset button at the back of the powerhead. The user manual can be downloaded from the electrolux website, although I didn’t find it very useful. There was some info on how to change the powerhead drive belt.

Problem starting Sometimes will not start at all. Sometimes will do a quick start and stop. Other times it starts and runs fine????
ANSWER : This can happen if you have an intermittent short in your cord. Try plugging it in and then wiggling the cord around where it goes into the body of the vacuum with the switch set to “on.” (If you’re not sure whether it’s on or off, just click it back and forth occasionally.)
.If the motor kicks on there’s a short, which usually requires a cord replacement. If that’s the case, it’s a relatively simple fix for most dyson models.
.If not, you could have a short in your switch or somewhere else in the electrical system of the machine.

I checked the belt and it has not broken, but when I start to vaccum the spinning head stops, and I start to smell a rubber smell…Do you think I need to replace the belt, I did get some string caught in it the last time I vaccummed, and it did stink like rubber then also…
ANSWER : Yes you do need to replace the belt they stretch out. Think of a belt like a big rubber band if you were to stretch it out and hold a lighter to it the rubber band would stay stretched out. That is the same thing that happens when you get it caught on string or an area rug the brush stops but the little metal shaft keeps spinning creating heat and stretching the belt. Keep in mind that the filters in these machine do need to be replaced regularly to keep the vacuum working correctly. Any good vacuum shop should be able to fix your problem. Reguardless of what they might tell you there these really are one of the best machines on the market and definatly worth having repaired.

ANSWER : Did you verify that the switch did not get moved to BARE FLOOR rather than CARPET. If it is not on CARPET the brush will not spin.

Won’t start I have a miele, model # s2481 red vacuum. It will not start. When the button is pressed it feels normal, but nothing happens, it will not start. Is this a problem my handy husband can tackle?
ANSWER : It is most likely your cord winder. They are a little tricky to fix yourself. A repair shop will probably charge about $50. To fix it. The contacts where the cord winder plugs into the motor need to be cleaned and adjusted. Just don’t let your repairman tell you that you need a new cord winder.
