How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
The superficial causes for your VAX vacuum shutting off during use can be from blockages along the hose and body of the model. There can also be a blockage caused by a build-up of dust, dirt, hair and debris across the models` brush bar.
If the machine will no longer efficiently pick items up, the filter might be dirty. If after cleaning the filter your vacuum is still not sucking things up, turn your vacuum around and pull the red tab at the bottom of your Dyson out.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
Most cleaning experts will tell you to vacuum your floors once or twice a week depending on how much foot traffic those floors are getting. Cotter says that high-traffic areas should be vacuumed twice weekly, as these areas have a higher level of dirt, and vacuuming this frequently will prevent matting.
“We would recommend vacuuming at least once or twice a week—and more often if we have pets—with the right tools to remove dust quickly and effectively,” Patel advises.
To reset, remove the Powered Head from the reach wand/handheld and clear any obstruction. Wait 1 minute before refitting the Powered Head, switch the slim vac on and press the brushbar on/off button.
What should I do? If your vacuum cleaner whistles, this is usually a sign that your device can`t suck in sufficient air. Often, it`s the dust container or bag that`s full. Check these first and exchange them if necessary.
This trick fixed it perfectly:- Unplug the charger from the wall. Plug it in again. Attach your Dyson and press the trigger (on button) for around 20 seconds (nothing will happen, just keep it pressed). My Dyson worked perfectly again straight away after doing this.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
To reset switch the brushbar and stick vac off, remove the powered head from the reach wand/handheld and clear any obstruction. Wait 1 minute before refitting the powered head tool, switch the stick vac on and press the brushbar ON/OFF button.
Where will I find the ratings label on my machine? You can find the ratings label typically on the back or base of your machine on a white or silver label. Your model number will be a mix of numbers and letters and your serial number will 21 digits long.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
Putting in the incorrect amount of oil, putting in the wrong type of oil, and oil contamination can all cause the pump to not reach full vacuum. For this reason, you must check the oil regularly to ensure that it is not only clean, but also properly filled.
Generally speaking, between the hours of 9 am and 7 pm, you`re pretty safe to vacuum. This will vary from place to place, and you should always consider the needs of your neighbors. Generally speaking, between the hours of 9 am and 7 pm, you`re pretty safe to vacuum.
But as a rule of thumb, you should mop your floors at least once a week—especially in areas that are more likely to get stains from drips and spills, like the kitchen and bathroom. “Of course, you need to vacuum or sweep the floor before mopping,” explains Leiva.
Take your time. Vacuuming slowly will allow your machine to suck up more dirt and dust, and ultimately get your rugs and carpets much cleaner. Slow vacuuming allows the brush to agitate the carpet properly and suck up the unclean bits that emerge.
The general consensus is that you need to vacuum your floors about once a week in order to keep dust and other allergens at bay.
Vacuuming can remove dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens from your carpets and upholstery. In addition, it helps to create a clean environment in which these allergens are less likely to increase. As a result, regular vacuuming can significantly impact your allergies and overall health.
Daily: Flush your toilet every day (even if it`s not in use) to discourage the growth of bacteria. Weekly: Deep-clean your toilet once a week or biweekly—this includes the toilet bowl, exterior and toilet seat. Yearly: Clean your toilet tank twice a year.
How Often Should You Clean Your Shower? Koch advises cleaning your shower weekly, but don`t worry, it doesn`t have to be a serious deep clean every time. She says at the very least to clean the floor, any shelves, and glass doors (if you have them) as part of your weekly housekeeping line-up.

Vacume wont **** opened it up see nothing wrong HELP
ANSWER : If no suction usuallly means a clog, either in the hose and the dirt inlet by the brush roll. Sometimes if the belt is stretched, it won’t turn the brush roll under load and it would seem like there is no suction.

I have my vacume electrical cord tangled inside and disconnected (I can see the open end of the connection from the power cord collector wheel! I need to take the vacume apart so get access to the wire inside. I need to know if there is something else to open other than the 4 screws. Your help is highly appreciated in advance.
ANSWER : Since you did not provide a model number for your vacuum, it is difficult to provide any precise directions regarding disassembly.
.
.However, most vacuum cleaners are fairly straightforward machines, and as long as you unplug the unit before you attempt any maintenance, then you should not have any trouble with the repair.
.
.Just be sure to keep track of all the screws you remove, and if different sizes are used in different parts of the vacuum, keep them separated and labelled so you can reinstall them in the correct places later.
.
.If the unit has a cover over the collection bag compartment, be sure to remove the cover and the bag to check for additional screws in that compartment.
.
.Other than that, just remove the visible screws holding the cover in place and then carefully remove the cover. If you need to reconnect the power supply wires from the cord to the vacuum, you may need to use a soldering iron, depending on how they are connected.

Our kenmore progressive model #11634922 was working fine today. And then – it’s not. Plugged in – nothing is working on it. We let it cool down (though it didn’t seem hot). Still nothing – no light, no motor. Tried it in some other plugs that we know are functioning well – and still nothing. Any idea what might be wrong with it? It’s six years old but doesn’t get heavy use.

Thanks so much ~ Susan Golden

ANSWER : Hi, it could be a number of things, cord may be bad as well as a problem with the motor. There also is a fuse that could have blown. If you go to sears.com, click on parts, put in your model number, when the page loads, click on the first link and you will have a parts list, and scroll down there will be a parts break-down picture that you can look at. You can also order parts thru the Sears website.

I have a Dyson Animal upright (purple). I took it apart to clean the cyclone chambers. When re-assembling the bottom closed before the opening rod was inserted. I can’t get the opening rod installed with the bottom opening closed. How do I open it? Thanks.
ANSWER : I looked in our DC07. I would try removing the top again and getting a long dowel or the opening rod, insert it down into the unit and PUSH. The opening rod opens the latch by pushing it, not pulling it. Here are some pictures of the latch. Top pic is in the unlock position. Bottom is the normal position.

I hope this helps.

I have a raynor flight star garage opener. Had a lighting strike 4 days ago. All power is good. The opener even has a little green light on the switch that is attached to it. However the opener is not responding. Is there a way to reset on the motor by taking off the housing? I don’t see any reset button on the out side of the housing.thnx
w
ANSWER : You could always try unplugging the unit and plugging it back in. If that doesn’t work the logic board is probably fried and unfortunately there is no replacement available for it any longer. You would need to buy a new opener. I’d recommend Liftmaster.

The Neutral/drive pedal fell off our Kirby G5 vacuum cleaner. I opened up the area housing its connection to the transmission and a couple of the parts were just laying inside. Chatter We have a Kirby Ultimate G. Since we purchased it it bounces across the floor and the level of the sweeper has nothing to do with it. To get it to stop, it has to be at the highest level. The place we bought it, has done nothing to help us. We tried a new beater brush, no help. If I have to use it at it’s highest level to sweep my carpet, I might as well not waste my time. ANy suggestions?

.Hello,
.I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
.Kirby Ultimate G Bagged Upright Vacuum
.The only thing I can suggest is that the brushroll could be in backwards, as you look @ the bottom of the brushroll from the bottom plate, the head of the screws should be facing the floor on each side of the brushroll, so check the brushroll because I thing that is what is happening, what you can do is adjust the brushroll down using the screws doing a ¼ or ½ turn
.Until the brushroll stops bouncing across the floor, once you get it adjusted correctly then raise the height adjustment to the highest level and adjust downward to listen for the tone to change and then try it, it should work and if not go down one more adjustment – also change the belt every 4 to 6 months as recommended by the manufacturer. Feel free to contact a local vac dealer in your area for the brushroll height adjustment if you have problems. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

The removable filter at the front is cleaned regularly, and is not clogged. However, the machine appears to be suffering from being clogged by dust, as it has started to make a high pitched noise, and I fear it may burn out. I can see some dust inside the front panel but cannot see how to remove the front to clean it out. (NB. I have located two screws – one on either side – but cannot see how to proceed further.) Please help! Thank you.
