How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Vacuum cleaners use an electric motor that spins a fan, sucking in air – and any small particles caught up in it – and pushing it out the other side, into a bag or a canister, to create the negative pressure.
Loose connections will cause your vacuum cleaner to lose suction. Make sure that the dust container, the hose, the tube and the brush are all attached properly. If the problem continues, your vacuum cleaner might have a technical problem. If you suspect this to be the case, contact an authorised service agent.
Clog located in the vacuum hose

Turn the unit on and feel the suction at the end of the hose handle. If there is no or low suction, then the clog is in the hose. You can remove the clog by running a long, stiff object through the hose, such as a butter knife, starting at the wall end.

Capture pumps, also referred to as entrapment pumps, have no moving parts and are used for applications that require extremely high vacuum pressures. Without moving parts, capture pumps can create a vacuum environment using two different methods.
Suction is the measure of pressure created by a vacuum motor measured in inches of water lift. Air flow is the measure of air volume flowing through a system measured in CFM or cubic feet per minute.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
Empty the vacuum cleaner, discard the contents in the outside trash and use an anti-bacterial wipe to clean the vacuum. Let it dry thoroughly. If your manufacturer says your vacuum cannister is washable, wash it out with warm, soapy water and then rinse it and let it dry.
the vacuum system may be dirty, the pumping line may be restricted or too small in diameter, the pump may be dirty or with too little capacity, the pumping speed may be restricted due to other causes.
The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle). Some manufacturers show the results from measurements made at the suction of the actual vacuum cleaner.
Motion of electrons in a space freed sufficiently from matter so that collisions with other particles play a negligible role. The motion of electrons in vacuum is controlled by electric and magnetic fields whose force on the electrons is proportional to their magnitude.
Perfect vacuum has a pressure of 0.0000 mbar absolute. In vacuum technology, the absolute pressure is always indicated, so that, in general, the index “abs” can be dropped.
Passive vacuum, also referred to as a `one-way valve`, provides a high level of socket comfort when a vacuum is created between the suspension sleeve and the liner/skin. When the amputee begins to walk the air is driven out of the socket to form a solid connection.
The term “pressure” is used to describe either negative (below atmospheric) or positive (above atmospheric) pressure. Positive pressure is called “gauge pressure”. The term “vacuum” is used to describe the region of pressure below one atmosphere of pressure, also referred to as negative pressure.
The more air flowing through a vacuum, the better, which therefore means that the higher the airflow rate, the higher the cleaning power. An average airflow rating for a vacuum cleaner sits between 50 – 100 CFM.
The level you set your vacuum depends on the height of your carpet. For bare floors, use the lowest or bare floor setting, for short and medium pile carpets use a medium setting and finally, for plush carpets use the highest setting.
A force that changes the direction of an object towards you, would be a pull. On the other hand, if it moves away, it is a push.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
When you use a vacuum cleaner without a HEPA filter, these particles are stirred up and put back out into the air through your vacuum`s exhaust. Regular filters can`t remove these harmful particulates and this puts the people in your home at risk.
Vacuum the Filter

If your central air filter shows no signs of grime buildup, you can use the hose attachment from your vacuum cleaner or use a handheld vacuum to remove any debris. If the vacuum hose doesn`t remove the buildup, you will need to wash it.

Place the removed vacuum parts in a sink or tub filled with warm, soapy water. Soak and rinse everything well with hot water. Use a faucet sprayer to quickly remove tough dirt and sticky residue. If needed, scrub with a sponge or microfiber cloth.

Problem: Vacuum motor won’t turn on. The power head operates, but nothing from the vacuum. Have checked all areas of airflow: hose, bag, motor filter and hepa filter. All are fine. Have checked and rechecked all electrical connections, all seem to be in working order. Vacuum hasn’t run for a week or so, so it’s not the thermal protector, unless it’s defective. Vacuum was running fine last week. Didn’t stop operating when using. Went to v
ANSWER : Hello! The culprit is the PCB Assembly;
Part # KC86WBZR3000…Cost is $6.99. I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Miele Champagne Vacuum Cleaner Model S548 I was using the vacuum as normal, moved locations so I plugged into another outlet & suddenly there was no power to the vacuum! I tried it in several other outlets, tried the reset button… & still no power to the vacuum. Any ideas what could be causing this? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
ANSWER : Greetings from ,
.

.This definitely sound like a cord reel issue to me. This is really the only problem that I ever see on a Miele vacuum cleaner. 9 times out of 10 the cord reel needs to be changed. If you purchase the cord from us, and it’s not the problem you may return it up to 60 days later for a full refund, that’s how confident I am that is what’s wrong with your machine.
.
Ok, so you need to replace the cord reel on a Miele , no problem! I’ll attempt to try and walk you through this repair with a detailed explanation of it, and along with some pictures to help you. You’ll first want to buy the new Miele S500 series cord reel

So once you have the cord reel, you’ll need either a Phillips head screw driver for the older S514 models, or a T20 Torx Screwdriver for the newer S514 model vacuums. The picture below is actually of the Miele S518 Cat & Dog series, but for this repair the procedure and parts are identical to your Miele Champagne. You’ll need to remove the hose, wand, and power nozzle from the vacuum cleaner before you begin.

1cd8104.jpg
The first thing you’ll wand to do is open up the bag housing, and remove the vacuum bag, as well as the exhaust filter which may be either the Cloth Super Air Clean Filter, or the HEPA Filter catridge which is blue in color. If you’re using the Super Air Clean filter, remove the filter, and then remove the bracket that secures the filter in place as well. Simply pull straight up on the bracket and it will come out.

Once the bag and the filter have been removed, you’ll need to take off the entire tool lid. While the vacuum cleaner is open so that you can see into the compartment where the bag just was, you need to pry two arms from the tool lid off of the main body housing. Simply put a screwdriver behind one of the blue arms, and pry inwards. Here’s a picture of what this looks like;

ea76cca.jpg
Once you have removed both of these clasps, the tool lid will pull straight upwards and off, leaving you with only the bottom part of the canister. This is how the vacuum cleaner should look now;

4e90a53.jpg
Now you’ll need to remove the black speed control box from the canister. There is one screw in the front of the black speed control box that needs to be removed. After the screw has been removed, turn the vacuum cleaner around so that the back of the machine where the cord reel goes into the vacuum is now facing you. If you look where the black speed control box meets the bottom part of the canister, you can see two clips that you’ll need to release before the variable speed control box can be removed. Simply put a screw driver and push in on the clip while lifting the black speed control box at the same time. Here’s where the clips are located on the vacuum;

c4f57b8.jpg
Ok, now that the speed control box has been removed, it’s time to separate the colored plastic from the base of the vacuum cleaner. There are 7 screws that need to be removed in order to get these housings separated. I have circled the location of each screw in the picture below;

d7e09aa.jpg
After removing all 7 screws, you can then simply pull upwards on the colored plastic housing, and remove the housing from the base of the vacuum cleaner so that the motor and cord reel are exposed. Once you have exposed the cord reel, you’ll need to remove the internal wires (white wire is in the higher posistion, and to the left of the lower right side black wire), as well as the rubber hose part. The rubber hose part simply pulls off, just like the wire terminals do. After removing these parts, you’ll need to remove one more screw with your screw driver. Here’s the picture of which screw needs to be removed;

707ba1e.jpg
After the final screw has been removed, you’ll have to remove the rectangular shaped wire harness that sits at the top of the cord reel. Pay close attention to how this wire harness is correctly seated which will save some aggravation when putting the vacuum back together. Here’s a picture of the wire harness that needs to be removed from the old cord reel;

9dd734e.jpg
Once the wire harness has been completely removed from the old cord reel, you may simply pull up on the cord reel and remove it. The new cord reel will come completely assembled, with all the parts and compontents that your faulty cord reel had. You simply need to line up the screw hole on the new cord reel with the hole in the bottom of the base of the vacuum. When installing the new cord reel be very careful that you don’t pinch any of the wires down by putting the cord reel on top of them. The wires have a specific place they go, and you’ll be able to see the correct path for these wires when paying close attention. Also remember to install the rubber tube back onto the new cord reel as well. Once the new cord reel has been installed, and screwed down, pull the plug out a little ways, and guide the plug through the colored top housing first, then screw the 7 screws that hold the upper housing to the lower housing back into to secure these housings together.

That’s about all there is to that repair! Please feel free to request a repair clarification if you have any questions about the repair that I can help you with, I’m always more then happy to help.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.

Power head attachment works great when plugged into the hose part of the vacuum. The problem is when I attach it to the tube for normal use there is no power. I have checked all the connections and switched the power switch on and off still no power from tube to power head.
Is there anything else I can try? Model Callisto
ANSWER : Try having someone turn the machine on and off while you pull the cord in and out with the cord more angled towards the on/off switch. Sometimes these models have a break in the cord rewind and will not put the power through to the motor.

Keep in mind this is repairable, and if the unit is less than 5 years old it should still be under warranty.

Good luck .

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.
