How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

There are three main causes for your Miele to not power on: The power switch has failed. The cord reel is damaged. Your motor has gone bad.
With average use, a Miele vacuum cleaner bag should last for around three months. However, this can vary depending on your home and how often you vacuum. If you have a large home or wall-to-wall carpets, budget to replace your bag every month.
Should you ever need have your Miele vacuum cleaner repaired, simply stop by a Miele Vacuum Repair Centre. Regardless of whether your vacuum cleaner is still covered by Miele warranty or not, you can expect outstanding service at one of our conveniently located Vacuum Repair Centres.
Durability & Warranty – If you`re looking for a vacuum cleaner with durability and longevity, look no further than Miele. Miele vacuum cleaners are designed and tested to last for 20 years. Miele vacuum cleaners come with a 7-year warranty on the motor and a 1-year warranty on parts and labor.
Neglect your vacuum filter bags, and you`ll swiftly lose suction power. This, in turn, places unnecessary strain on your vacuum`s motor. Eventually, your vacuum will become a lot more difficult to maneuver, not to mention less effective at cleaning your rugs, carpeting, or other surfaces.
How long do vacuum cleaners last? According to Consumer Reports, vacuum cleaners last a median of eight years. But the lifespan varies wildly by not only brand but your own personal use.
Miele Washing Machines are vigorously tested to last the equivalent of 20 years use. Miele Washing Machines are ecological and consume only the amount of water and electricity needed for excellent cleaning and rinsing results.
Before we go any further, let`s remember that all Miele Vacuum Cleaners share some basic features: All Miele Vacuums come with a Quiet 1200 W motor. That means They all have the same suction power. They are all made of ABS Plastic, which makes them extremely durable but very lightweight.
The exhaust filter, which could be either the Miele Active AirClean SF-AA50 Filter or the Miele HEPA AirClean SF-HA50 Filter, should be changed once every 50 hours of use. To make things easy for you, each of these filters comes equipped with an indicator strip that changes from green to red as the year marches on.
Overheated Motor

If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

It might sound simple, but lack of power is often the cause of a vacuum cleaner that won`t work. Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
With 11 employees, 4 lathes, and a drilling machine, Miele and Zinkann launched their first cream separators and butter machines in 1899 in Herzebrock, Germany. Their guiding principle, “Immer Besser” – which translates as “Forever Better”, still shapes the company today.

Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

To do this, turn on the vacuum and press the reset button. The service indicator light will turn off and then be reset to its original position. This will only work if the indicator light has already come on, not if the reset button has been pushed between filter changes.

Vacuum not running; do I have to replace the cord winder or just cord?
ANSWER : Typically, the cord and winder are supplied as a unit.  It is possible to fit new cord to an existing winder, but the amount of labour involved will make the job more expensive than simply exchanging the complete unit.  Even if you’re going to do the job yourself, it’s simply not worth planning to just fit new cable (unless you are a masochist with unlimited time and patience).  Pay that bit extra for a complete unit – you’ll be glad you did (or you’ll be sorry if you don’t!).

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

How to replace power cord on Hoover WindTunnel upright vacuum
ANSWER : The aforementioned solutions probably never even attempted this fix on this model. The handle does NOT need to come off. but the 5 screws on the front housing DO: 2 above the light and 3 below it. Then to get the colored housing off you need to access 2 screws on the underside that are beneath the agitator roller. To do that, obviously the 4 screws holding the bottom plate need to come off too. Here’s a link to a schematic that might help as you attempt to do this, (assuming that you still do!) http://www.elkypro.com/hoops2005/vacuum_parts/hoover/U5461-900.html

Once you have the main body housing cover off, then you can access the 2 screws atop of each trunnion cover that holds the motor assembly cover halves together. If you’ve made it this far, then gently pry apart the motor halves keeping even as yo do. Now you can see all the wiring necessary to cut and splice. Happy cord replacing! As for me, I am headed for the store, as I am not so sure I can remember how to get the darn thing put back together. But it was fun taking it apart!

I own an Oreck 2310RS upright vacuum cleaner. The cord is too short for my needs. The cord I need is a two wire 25 to 30 foot cord. Where can I buy this vacuum cord and how do I connect it? Thanks, Don
ANSWER : You can buy one at a oreck store but i would tell you to use an extention cord

We bought a new cord winder for our Electrolux 1205 Canister Vacuum cleaner and we are trying to install it is not turning on. We get it all connected but it doesn’t turn on. Is there a reset button or some advise you can give me to get it working? I used a voltage detector to see if there was power running through the cord winder and there is.
ANSWER : Did you put a bag in the vacuum?
.I suspect there’s an improper wire connection somewhere, but there are other things that could cause this I strongly recommend taking it to an authorized Aerus Electrolux dealer and letting a trained tech check it out.
