How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

You may be hearing excessive noise because your filters are dirty. To clean them, watch our Cleaning Filters video. A damaged Brush Roll could also be the problem. To fix, first make sure your vacuum is turned OFF and unplugged.
If your machine is making an abnormally loud noise it is likely due to the belt slipping or the brush roll being incorrectly installed, follow these steps to resolve: Turn off and unplug machine. Use a Phllips-head screwdriver to remove 3 screws, 2 in the belt cover and 1 on the brush roll mount. Remove belt cover.
Worn out bearings on the brush roll will make a vacuum much noisier. This is a good time to check them after cleaning and inspecting the brush roll. Try spinning each bearing by hand. Some brush rolls have only one bearing on the roll, and the other bearing is in the head where the roll is mounted.
With excessive use and regular exposure to dust and dirt, the filters attached to the vacuum cleaner get grime on them. This dusty layer closes the way for air to pass through the channel. Thus, the machine puts a lot of effort and generates noise in excess to pass the air throughout the system.
This means it is best to choose a vacuum cleaner with a noise output that is less than 70 dB. However, the noise levels of vacuum cleaners fall between 75dB to 85dB. Thus, continuous exposure to such noise levels affect a user`s health while also being a sign and source of inefficiencies in the equipment.
Sound enclosures, noise reduction blankets, sound curtain noise barriers, or sound barrier walls are a few options to consider when reviewing noise reduction materials. If the vacuum pump is indoors, a noise enclosure would be the recommended solution.
The majority of robot vacuums produce noise at a level between 70 and 80 dB, comparable to that of a garbage disposal or a noisy restaurant.
It could be that the motor is out of balance, (can be caused by build up of dust on the motor fans), Could be a mis-aligned or damaged seal, Could be motor bearings, or could be an air leak.
On average a brushroll should be replaced every year or two. If you`re not sure if the vacuum is working as good as it could or should be, replacing the brushroll can be an easy fix .
While bagless uprights may be a bit louder and heavier than their more expensive counterparts, they tend to come with all the essential attachments and features to clean your carpet.
Living room music (76 dB); radio or TV-audio, vacuum cleaner (70 dB).
Upright vacuum cleaners typically have a noise output of 75db to 80dB. They are often the loudest vacuum cleaners due to their powerful suction and motor size. Cylinder vacuum cleaners are a bit quieter than uprights on average, with a range of approximately 72dB to 80dB.
The suction capacity indicates how powerful the vacuum cleaner is, and the air volume indicates how much air the vacuum cleaner is able to move. The suction power adds up the suction capacity and the air volume and indicates how much power the vacuum cleaner has.
There`s a reason your vacuum, car, potato chips, are way louder than they need to be. Surprisingly it`s done on purpose. Engineers and designers manipulate the auditory element of products. Some of the biggest culprits are vacuums and cars.
ProSilence bagless vacuum cleaners.

Best In Test

The noise from Oxygen vacuum cleaner never reached above 75 dB in our test. Compared to the Dyson, which reached above 90 dB, the Electrolux Oxygen is without a doubt a more silent and better designed machine.

Instead, Dyson says Auto/Med mode is best for general cleaning. At around 73 decibels, this is considered to be around the standard for a vacuum cleaner.
What is the quietest robotic vacuum cleaner? The Zoozee Z70 Robot Vacuum and Mop is the quietest robotic vacuum cleaner thanks to its specialized, low-noise motor. It`s designed to work at 47.8dB on low suction mode and a maximum of 62.2dB on high suction when measured from a distance of 1.64ft (500mm).
Samsung – Jet Bot AI+ Robot Vacuum with Object Recognition – White. “I`ve had other robot vacuums and this one by far is the most quiet and easiest to clean! … The best and only LiDAR robot vacuum… Amazing technology!
The sound level at minimum flow rate is quieter than 35dB the sound level at maximum flow rate is 59 dB.
That`s nothing to worry about. The whooping noise is air coming between the post motor filter and it`s seals. This is very common on DC25, DC40, DC41 and DC55 machines.
While you should clean some individual parts more often, the Vacuum Experts say it`s a good rule of thumb to take apart the entire vacuum and scrub it down about once a year.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Brushes. According to iRobot, brushes should be replaced every 6-12 months. Robot vacuums like the iRobot Roomba j7+ have multiple brushes that allow it to clean.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

I have a Dyson vacuum cleaner …upright….all of a sudden my vacuum started making this awful sound…like a loud buzz…but only when I have it on carpet….when I have it on “floor” mode it’s fine….sometimes(although seldom) it has worked without buzzing…and it’s LOUD!!….I have only had this vacuum for a year….and no…I have never picked up any coins or hard stuff.only use it for 2 rooms.the rest of the house is wood floors…….what shall I do?
Thanks……Gloria
