How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Upright vacuum cleaners are lightweight, slim and are designed to be used in an upright position. They feature an easily manoeuvrable head and a long handle that eliminates the need for you to bend close to the floor, enabling you to stand or walk comfortably while operating the cleaner.
The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan. The impeller rotates at an incredibly high speed of about 30,000 to 35,000 RPM. A suction motor`s power is measured by multiplying the rate of air flow and the vacuum pressure, which induces air flow from the brush through the hose.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
Both upright vacuum cleaners and stick vacuums can both tackle carpets, hard floors, stairs, above floor and car interiors. However, uprights can do it all with the floor head and the long hose, whereas cordless vacuums can easily convert to handheld mode.
Suction is the air pressure differential between areas. Removing air from a space results in a pressure differential. Suction pressure is therefore limited by external air pressure. Even a perfect vacuum cannot suck with more pressure than is available in the surrounding environment.
The Science on How a Suction Cup Works

When you press a suction cup against a wall or window, you push out the air inside it, eliminating the pressure inside the suction cup and creating a vacuum which seals the cup tightly to the surface you want it to stick to.

Hint: If there is suction from the hose but not the main base, there may be a blockage in the base connecting tube or the beater bar may not be rotating. Inspect the base of the vacuum cleaner for blockages and ensure that the belts are not broken.
Suction Hose is a specific type of fire hose used in drafting operations, when a fire engine uses a vacuum to draw water from a portable water tank, pool, or other static water source. It is built to withstand vacuum, rather than pressure, abrasion, and heat.
The Suction Control Valve or SCV is responsible for the control of fuel pressure inside common rail engines. It allows only the required amount of fuel to be pumped through the system.
We have two possible ways of adjusting the pressure in a vacuum system: first, by changing the pumping speed (altering the speed of the pump or throttling by closing a valve); second, through admission of gas (opening a valve).
A vacuum is a space devoid of matter. The word is derived from the Latin adjective vacuus for “vacant” or “void”. An approximation to such vacuum is a region with a gaseous pressure much less than atmospheric pressure.
A vacuum is a volume empty of matter, sometimes called `free-space`. In practice, only partial vacuums are possible.
Compact and lightweight, stick vacuums are great for a quick cleaning, but they don`t match the deep-cleaning prowess of upright or canister vacuums.
Low-cost upright vacuum cleaners are frequently of Type I, whereas more expensive vacuums are of Type II. Canister-type vacuum cleaners are usually of Type II.
The first consideration when picking a vacuum is the type of flooring in your home. If you have a lot of carpeting, you`ll need an upright or canister vacuum for deep cleaning. If you have mostly hard-surface flooring, you might be able to use a stick or robotic vacuum for light cleaning jobs.
Performance. While a good quality upright vacuum that comes with a HEPA filter is effective at cleaning, most central vacuum systems are simply more powerful. That means they do a better job at picking up dust and allergens that are not visible to the human eye.
Corded Vacuums

However, while they generally have reliable suction power, lithium-powered, cordless stick vacuums can perform just as efficiently. Corded vacuums will typically have more suction power than cordless options with non-lithium batteries.

No suction vacuum won’t pick up — I’ve checked the bag, hose…and it seems to have no sucking power. The internal hose may be jammed (I vacuumed up a lot of shredded paper), but nothing as far as I can stick in fingers in. I don’t have a metal coat hanger to slip down, but I’m afraid that might tear the hose and then the darn thing won’t work anyway. :o(
ANSWER : If it is plugged, try using a tape measure, i know it sounds stupid but it will work to unplug your line and will not tear your hose..

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

No vacuum suction during normal floor cleaning operation
ANSWER : That door is called a valve door, and it may have broken, part #38718013. Or the valve arm, rear broke, part number 38719048. The spring part # is 38358001. Usually it is the valve arm that breaks. You would have to take the top cover off, then you can see the parts.

My Hoover Z 400 collapsible vacuum won’t lock in the upright position. I pull the pin to change from a cannister to an upright, but the unit won’t lock into position
ANSWER : This just happened to me. i took the vacuum completely apart and found that there is a locking plastic “tooth”. this had snapped off but still it the track. the damage was bad but i was able to wash of all the lube off it and used a 2 part epoxy glue to put the tooth back into place. it works ok now. Not like new but it will hold. this was sorta easy but i enjoy fixing things. If your not handy i wouldnt recommend you try it. i am in the process to making an aluminum version of the tooth so it wont break again.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.
