How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If your machine is making an abnormally loud noise it is likely due to the belt slipping or the brush roll being incorrectly installed, follow these steps to resolve: Turn off and unplug machine. Use a Phllips-head screwdriver to remove 3 screws, 2 in the belt cover and 1 on the brush roll mount. Remove belt cover.
Blockage – when a vacuum cleaner becomes unusually loud, it is normally because of a blockage of some sort. This is a problem that is easily solved by turning off the cleaner, check for blockages in the pipes, and remove them. You can also check and empty the canister to remove any possible blockages there as well.
Worn out bearings on the brush roll will make a vacuum much noisier. This is a good time to check them after cleaning and inspecting the brush roll. Try spinning each bearing by hand. Some brush rolls have only one bearing on the roll, and the other bearing is in the head where the roll is mounted.
Check the hose for any cracks or holes. You may be hearing excessive noise because your filters are dirty. To clean them, watch our Cleaning Filters video. A damaged Brush Roll could also be the problem.
Sound enclosures, noise reduction blankets, sound curtain noise barriers, or sound barrier walls are a few options to consider when reviewing noise reduction materials. If the vacuum pump is indoors, a noise enclosure would be the recommended solution.
What really happened was a tiny rock got stuck in one of the little crevices of the brush roll in between the bristles. It was grinding against one of the rug strips on the bottom plate. That`s what was making the vacuum sound like a chainsaw! So I dug out the rock, and now the vacuum works like new again!
If the cleaner becomes noisy or starts vibrating, it may be because some debris has got tangled around the brush roll or agitator situated in the bottom of the cleaner.
If you listen very carefully, sometimes you can hear a “hiss” sound that is the signal of a vacuum leak. However, the most common way to notice this is when the engine loses fuel efficiency. The reason for this is due to the fact that vehicle exhaust is delayed on exiting the combustion chamber.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
If the fan is loose on the assembly, tighten it with a ratchet. As the motor cranks, a loose fan makes a rattling sound. Clean the engine`s frame of dirt and grime. Large amounts of dirt or dust in the vicinity of the motor might cause it to overheat, resulting in vibration and loud noise.
Overall, Bissell is a popular vacuum brand for a reason – these vacuums are dependable and last up to two years without issue. However, some models are better than others when it comes to cleaning different surfaces.
A. There is a foam disc that closes the opening where the drain tube comes out to reduce the noise from the ultrasonic cleaner.
Check for smooth action by spinning the brush roll by hand. Please call BISSELL Consumer Care if the noise is excessively loud or unusual. With both the brush and vacuum motors turned on, the CrossWave may produce up to 80 decibels.
If you find that your CleanView vacuum is hard to push, you may need to adjust the height adjustment dial. The highest setting should be used for high pile and most shag carpet.
The vacuum of outer space has essentially zero air. Because sound is just vibrating air, space has no air to vibrate and therefore no sound. If you are sitting in a space ship and another space ship explodes, you would hear nothing.
If you find that your CleanView vacuum is hard to push, you may need to adjust the height adjustment dial. The highest setting should be used for high pile and most shag carpet.
Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
What should I do? If your vacuum cleaner whistles, this is usually a sign that your device can`t suck in sufficient air. Often, it`s the dust container or bag that`s full. Check these first and exchange them if necessary.

How do I install brushes on Hoover V2 Windtunnel? Does a right and left go on the right side and vice versa on the left side? That is how it orignally came? Or do I put both rights on the right and both lefts on the left? Thanks for your help and advice.
ANSWER : Both right with right left with left.

I have a 2 fluorescent light fixture in my bathroom. The right side light quit working. I took the starter out of the left side and put it in the right and it worked. Starter, right? I bought a package of 2 Leviton starters FS 2 15w. They didn’t work. Thinking bad, I returned it for another package. Still not working. The original starter is a Sylvania FS 2. Is it possible to have FOUR bad “new” starters? Do I need to replace it with the EXACT same starter? This light fixture is 38 years old. No
ANSWER : It is not likely that you had 4 bad starters.I assume you have more modern lights in it too(not 30 yrs old). Here is a link to Sylvania. It may be just that it requires certain something(who knows what)that only Sylvania has.It seems strange because they are all basically the same and a generic one seems like it would work.I also googled flourescent light starters and under one that talked about operation,it did refer to some older models. But like I said,it probably has newer lights so who knows what the heck.Well, here you go.You may also just want to call Sylvania and ask where you can find a replacement instead of paying $5 to ship $2 worth of parts.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The belt is in good shape but your brushroll could be froze up or the bearings are shot in the ends of the brushroll or you may have a dirt, thread and hair buildup in the ends on both sides, or you may have to replace the brushroll depending on if it is a wood or metal brushroll. The best way to see if the brushroll is good is to stand it on end and spin it to see if it spins freely m if not try the things that I mentioned above or replace it. Also, the recommended belt change on any vacuum cleaner is every 4 to 6 months for the best cleaning. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

I have a Hoover Steamvac model #f5888-900. Recently, after finishing use, it leaks a lot of water from the bottom of the unit onto the recently cleaned carpets. Do you know what would cause this spewing of water after completion of use?
ANSWER : Either the rod in the handle is holding and not releasing the resevoir asm, this where the tank sits on, is bad. So water is not being shut off completely when off.

BEATER BAR OUR CLEANER IS ONE YEAR OLD AND HAS BECOME VERY NOISY WHEN THE BEATER BAR IS ON … HAVE CHECKED THE BELT AND MOVEMENT OF THE ROLLER .. DOESN’T SEEM TO BE THE ISSUE. ANY SUGGESTIONS
ANSWER : The newer models have plastic end caps that will melt when the bearing heats up. This will cause the cap to go “off-centre” and the roller will vibrate badly. If this is the case, you will have to replace the roller.
.If the belt is a geared drive, check the belt for any missing teeth.
