How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

If a vacuum motor overheats due to poor airflow, the vacuum will automatically shut off. This is most commonly caused by an air passage that is plugged by hair or dirt. Refer to the leaky hose guide to remove the hose, then inspect for hair or dirt clogs.
Overheated Motor
If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.
NOTE: If the powerhead is blocked, the motor will switch off automatically. If this occurs, switch off the vacuum cleaner and remove the battery. Remove the blockage, and switch on the cleaner.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Blockages or dirty filters may cause this to happen, the safety cut off will activate and switch off the electrical supply. If the cleaner has cut out, simply unplug and check for a blockage or dirty filters.
Overheating usually occurs because the dust bag has not been emptied, filter has not been cleaned or there is a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bent hand piece. If your vacuum shuts down unexpectedly, make sure you turn the vacuum off and unplug it from the wall socket.
If you find that your machine is turning off intermittently, the filter in your vacuum is most likely full and covering the ventilation system. Remove the filter, then empty and wash it. Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry.
Turns off automatically
For a cordless miele stick vacuum cleaner, a temperature limiter switch automatically turns off the vacuum cleaner if it gets too hot. (Some models have a temperature warning light.) Overheating may be caused by a blockage in the vacuum, or due to a full dustbag and/or filters.
If the vacuum cleaner stops suddenly, the filters should be checked to make sure that they are not blocked or that they require changing. This applies to both bagged and bagless models. Also check if the nozzle or hose are blocked.
For best results the filters can be washed in warm water but check they are thoroughly dry before putting them back into place, this may take up to 24 hours. Hoover recommend that you fit new filters once per year to keep your vacuum cleaner in tip top working order.
A washable HEPA filter should be cleaned by rinsing it under cold water. You should be careful not to touch the filter material, only allowing it to come in contact with water. Allow the filter to completely dry before reinstalling it. Some filters have special instructions.
Twist the lid until the arrows line up and open up the container to get to the hepa filter. Take the filter out and brush the dirt out, once a month wash the filter in warm water. Please make sure it is thoroughly dry before popping it back in – this may take around 24 hours.
How Vacuum Switches Work. Once the switch registers a change in the negative pressure based on the preset sensitivity of the setpoint, the diaphragm of the switch will open or close the attached circuit, turning off or powering on a device. Vacuum switches can be used with NO and NC states.
Vacuuming once a month is not recommended. Carpet and rugs are typically vacuumed more than hard surfaces because they collect more soil and dust that can become damaging as it grounds deep into the fibers.
The suction motor creates vacuum pressure and suction by rotating a motor fan. The impeller rotates at an incredibly high speed of about 30,000 to 35,000 RPM. A suction motor`s power is measured by multiplying the rate of air flow and the vacuum pressure, which induces air flow from the brush through the hose.
One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.
It`s possible there`s a power consumption issue, with there just not being enough residual charge to run the machine. A new battery should fix this. My other thought is that it`s overheating. If too much power is pushed through the motor, which MAX power does, it could stop after a few seconds if it become hot.
The vacuum has a safety feature that turns off the vacuum when the vacuum gets to a certain high temperature or overheats. This happens because the vacuum has a motor protective thermostat. If the vacuum turns off due to overheating, the thermostat has to be reset before you can use it again.
You can think of the vacuum as an object that can hold energy (the radiation) and thus can have a temperature. As heat flows into it, that radiation temperature goes up. In the long run, the atoms also will reach thermal equilibrium, as some of them evaporate into the vacuum.
A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine continues to overheat, please refrain from using it until it has cooled down sufficiently and then carry out the performance checks.
Check Your Battery & Charger:
Batteries don`t last forever depending on age and use. You may need to buy a new battery if your Dyson vacuum is turning on and off after only a few minutes of use.
Check For Clogs or Blocks In The Vacuum Check the hoses, the filters, and throughout the vacuum, and clean out any blockages or clogs. Vacuums will likely also have a recommended cooldown time to ensure that the vacuum won`t overheat. You will need to wait for that time before you turn the vacuum back on.
Overheating can damage your vacuum. So if it starts to potentially reach a condition where it might overheat, it will shut off instead. Check for a few potential problems and let your vacuum cool down in order to use it again.
