How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

To reset, remove the Powered Head from the reach wand/handheld and clear any obstruction. Wait 1 minute before refitting the Powered Head, switch the slim vac on and press the brushbar on/off button. Check the user guide for the specific steps for your model.
Make sure the Brushbar on the Powered Head has been activated by pressing the Brushbar on/off button. Check there are no blockages in any of the pipes. Disconnect each section from the slim vac and carefully remove any blockages. If Low Suction has been selected, activate the boost mode to increase suction.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
The safest and most environmentally friendly way to dispose of a vacuum cleaner is to recycle it. Most vacuum parts, such as rubber, plastic, and metal components, can be recycled.
To fix a clog in the hose, feed one end into a garbage bag, and poke the other end with the back of a mop pole, until you push the clog material out into the garbage bag. To fix a clog in the vacuum, whether it is a canister or bag, use your finger to feel for a clog. Pull as much of it out as you can and discard.
Gravity and friction are the two main forces that make vacuum suction work. While gravity pulls molecules in the air toward the earth, creating an atmospheric pressure, the suction cup and vacuum pump cause a pressure difference, attaching both surfaces.
All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
Vacuum means the absence of all matter including air. As there is no air in the vacuum, air pressure will be zero.
If your vaccum cannot be repaired at a local vaccum repair shop, you can put it in the garbage or take it to a recycling site listed below. Best Buy has a free recycling program for certain types of vaccums. Visit their website for more information.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.
WINNER: When it comes to low prices while still offering impressive features, the Vax wins out on this round. But Dyson deserves an honourable mention as its higher price is justified by build quality, performance and that long warranty.
The suction power is measured in Watt (W) and is typically between 250 W and 450 W for machines with 1 motor. The suction power is to be measured at the end of the tube of a complete vacuum cleaner (i.e. with tube, hose and filters – but without nozzle).
Suction is the air pressure differential between areas. Removing air from a space results in a pressure differential. Suction pressure is therefore limited by external air pressure. Even a perfect vacuum cannot suck with more pressure than is available in the surrounding environment.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
What Is A Suction Control Valve? The Suction Control Valve or SCV is responsible for the control of fuel pressure inside common rail engines. It allows only the required amount of fuel to be pumped through the system.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
The most common reason for vacuum motors failing is overheating. Most `dry` vacuums have a flow-though motor. These motors use the air they have sucked up the dust with, to cool themselves. When there is a blockage, flow-though motors are unable to cool themselves due to the lack of airflow.
Any negative pressure significantly below standard atmospheric pressure (760 Torr/mmHg, 29.9 inHg or 14.7 PSI) is considered a vacuum.
In 1860 a manual vacuum cleaner was invented by Daniel Hess of West Union, Iowa. Called a “carpet sweeper“, It gathered dust with a rotating brush and had a bellows for generating suction. Another early model (1869) was the “Whirlwind”, invented in Chicago in 1868 by Ives W. McGaffey.
A senior test project leader stated that one of his top tips for lengthening a vacuum`s lifespan is “Don`t let the bag or bin get filled to the brim, which can clog the machine.” In addition to the extra work, dust escaping from a reused bag tends to go right back into the motor, causing damage.

Hi my dyson dc18 has great suction from wand but when you got to use the vac for floors little suction but wand still got suction even while vacuming floors is it suposed to stop suction from wand
ANSWER : My Dyson dc18 had the same symptoms. The wand worked well and the floor bar had no suction. After removing pieces & shoving my fingers into the machine (no blockage) I found the suction pipe rotates between two positions (floor and wand). It looks like a piece of plastic broke on the outside housing, so it no longer rotates positions when the wheels are raised or lowered. My son found we can move the suction by sliding a finger into the mechanism behind the wheel cover, and rotating the plastic piece clock-wise or counter clock-wise until it locks into position. It’s a big pain but it works for now. I wish I could find a replacement piece online. Patty

Base suction and tool suction both have stopped working
ANSWER : On the top of the water reservoir (under the handle that you use to lift it off) is a large dial. The top says “hose” and the bottom says “floor”. Turn it to where it says floor. If your brush is not working than you going to have to take it apart, if not mechanical incline, take picture and note and you will do fine, or take it to the repair shop and to have it done, it should be no more than 25-30 to get the belt replace. Belts tend to wear quickly depend on the carpet length due to friction cause turning the brush rubbing the floor. the brush may still spin but wont have a strong pick up spin due to worn belt. If the belt is spinning and the motor run strong, you going to still have to take it apart to see where is clogged. The Vac doesn’t have many parts, taking picture step by step and some note you probably can do it yourself.

No suction I am getting no suction on my central vac at the vac. I do not believe that the piping is plugged up, the vacuum is not creating suction. What are the causes of no suction at the vacuum and how do I take the top half of the Nutone central vac off?
ANSWER : Use the guide at builtinvacuum.com/flowchrt.html to find the issue and solution. Most likely you need to test it without any filter and be sure the bottom of the unit is attached 🙂 To get access to the motors you need to unbolt the very top sides.

Suction button Although my Hoover Spin scrub is working perfecting dispensing the solution, when I go to suck up the solution from the carpet–I am having problems with the RED suction button that keeps popping up. I have to stop the cleaner and lift up the dirty water container to break the suction. Ive tried cleaning the netting that is encased around it, but still no luck.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

ANSWER : This happens when the filter on the inside of the lid for the dirty water tank is pushed all of the way up. You need to leave a 1/4 in. gap from the top to the top of the filter

Poor Suction Heya! So I just picked up a used Dyson, but when I vacuum with it, the suction is pretty weak and it spits all kinds of stuff out the back and into my feet. When I pull the hose I have good suction, but in regular mode it hardly picks up anything. The brushes are spinning, and it eventually will clean an area if I go over it again and again. Maybe a clog somewhere? Please tell me that Dysons have better suction than my $50 Dirt Devil! Thanks!
ANSWER : I recently bought a second hand Dyson DC07. Its suction was poor. I removed all the un-clipable pipe bits and to remove any blockage but it all looked clear. The Final Sponge and hepper filter did have a lot of dust in it and the rotating brush was full of hair but nothing bad.
.
.I eventual gave in to curiosity and removed the three screws in the top or the yellow removable dust collection tube and cyclone bit to see what was in there. The mechanism to release the flap at the bottom of the collection tube does not allow you to remove the lid completely but it does open far enough to get inside. I found the whole top section of the yellow plastic bit blocked by a big plug of compacted dust and a champagne cork. If you are willing to take the risk and have a torx 15 screwdriver handy it that part may be blocked. It did get a bit messy.
.
.If I was going to attempt the same procedure I’d remove the dust collection unit from the vacuum cleaner as I did before, but leave the clear tube attached and the emptying flap firmly closed to reduce the mess from the dust falling out the bottom while cleaning the top part.

Lost suction my DCO7 lost suction in the hose I started taking it apart and cleaning it and looking for clogs (probably more than I should have) and when I put it back together it has awesome suction in the hose but no suction in the base. It just pulls the pine needles up (christmas tree) but they never appear in the “bag” compartment and when I look they are just all gathered in a clump in the bottom by the brush.
ANSWER : Hi.
.
.Remove the sole plate turn the 3 plastic screws to unlock & lift off.
.
.Now remove the blockages that have accumilated from the oppening of short clear hose.
.Check you can turn brush roller & check belt.
.
.Now reassemble switch on pull handle back & look under machine is brush spinning ?
.
.If not check the knob on side of machine is in drive (D) position.

Suction Cover The suction cover of my Eureka Deep Steam 2575A is broken – the tabs snapped off of the cover so I am unable to screw the suction cover back on. I need to purchase a new suction cover but can’t find one anywhere. Anyone know what I can do? thanks

No Suction My two year old Kenmore Progressive stopped working in January. The guy at the Sears service center convinced me that buying a new one would be cheaper than getting it fixed. So I bought the exact same model and now this one has given out in the exact same way! I’m so confused. When I press on, it lights up and makes the whirring noise. Everything seems to be working but there is no suction anywhere. Not in the main part or the hose and there’s no “cyclone effect” in the chamber. All
ANSWER : Try looking within the vacuum to see where the suction is getting stuck at. You may have to do some disasselbmeing but this is a manufacturers problem. You should also try to speak to the manager at the support and make a big dispute until you get your way. (usually works with those people) If possible, return the vacuum.
