How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Locate the model number. This will often appear on the box or the back of the vacuum cleaner, hidden by cords and hoses. Once you have this information, contact a local store that carries vacuum cleaner bags and provide the associate with the make, model and model number of your vacuum cleaner.
The question is simple, but the answer is not. Obviously, there are different sizes of vacuum storage bags, but the real problem is that there isn`t a standard acceptance of what constitutes a particular size, so a Neusu Large might have the same dimensions as another manufacturer`s `Extra Large`.
The bag itself acts as a filter to trap pet dander, allergens, dust, dirt, and contaminants to protect anyone better. High-quality bags are airtight and do not allow small particles to escape back into the room and air.
Regular plastic or poly bags will not work for vacuum sealing. Even a thick six mil plastic bag will have a high oxygen transmittal rate and allow oxygen to enter the package after a completed seal. Home use vacuum sealers come with channeled or textured co-extruded bags.
Make sure the bag fits well and that it`s the correct size – a bag that`s too big or small or a different thickness from the branded one can affect suction. Check for excess dust in the compartment after the first use, as this is a sign of an ill-fitting bag.
Keep all vacuum sealer bags in a cool, dry place so they stay in top condition. It`s also recommended to let the air out and reseal the bags every few months if you`re storing things long-term.
Almost all storage bags are available in certain sizes: jumbo or extra large (approximately 30″ x 40″), large (24″ x 32″), medium (20″ x 28″), and small (16″ x 24″). They can be purchased one size per package or a combination of sizes per package.
Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
Bag vacuums have one major advantage: There is no dust plume when you empty, unlike with bagless vacuum cleaners, where there is almost always a dust plume because the dirt and debris is not contained in a bag. Sometimes, this particle-rich plume can be bad enough to irritate your sinuses.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.
Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)
I had a real heck of a time with the bag installation, because after the pop i zipped it up and started to use it and then the bag of the vac, not the replaceable bag fell off and i kept putting it back on but it kept falling off and when i looked inside the bag to reattach it to the vac cleaner i noticed that the dust was all inside. i haven’t even used it that much as i keep it to do the upstairs bedroom only. i love that it is so lightweight and easy to use and i hope that someone can co
Mary, I have some wonderful news for you and your Oreck XL2600 Vacuum, I called 1 800 989 3535 customer service and inquired about your bag attach problem, it seems to be a docking station problem that “may” be warranteed, however if it is missing then it is assumed not a manufacturers defect and therefore must be purchased, however they assured me the price is reasonable and inexpensive.
.Please call the 1 800 # above with the model XL2600 upright and they will assist you in locating a repair store nearest yoou or you may go online to www.oreck.com
and visit there store locator using your zip code, please dont try to glue…. I hope this works for you Mary, and please have a wonderful day!!!!
I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.
I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000
Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.
.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.
Won’t start. My son was using the vacuum & Didn’t change the bag. The vacuum was making the full bag smell, but the light was’t on & it didn’t stop. I stopped him, changed the bag, checked the filter, closed the compartments & turned on the vacuum. Nothing happened. I checked to be sure that it was plugged in, that wasn’t the problem. I’ve let the vacuum “rest” for several days, It still won’t start. Any suggestions?
There is a reset button at the back of the powerhead. The user manual can be downloaded from the electrolux website, although I didn’t find it very useful. There was some info on how to change the powerhead drive belt.
Overheated vacuum After I finished vacuuming the library last night I changed the bag and shook out both filters and vacuum would not restart. The canister unit felt real warm to the touch but I had been using it a least 1/2 hour non stop. The bag was pretty full but not overly so. It’s a Simplicity canister with power head. The carpet is long shag from the 70’s Did it just over heat? Thanks Shauna
It normally won’t over heat unless the bag is too full, the filters are clogged, or you have have a clog in the hose or down by the brush roll, the inlet may be clogged. Some will restart after a while, some others have a reset to push. If it won’t power on, then you have a problem and it will have to serviced.
