How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

To make sure that you buy the right dust bags, it is important that you know the make and model of the vacuum cleaner. This information can usually be found on a label on the product. It will also be referenced in the product`s instruction manual.
Not All Vacuum Bags Are the Same

The fundamental principle is always to use the bag recommended by the factory for your vacuum model. Hypo-allergenic and other HEPA high filtration bags clean the air and the inside of vacuums better than cheap bags.

The question is simple, but the answer is not. Obviously, there are different sizes of vacuum storage bags, but the real problem is that there isn`t a standard acceptance of what constitutes a particular size, so a Neusu Large might have the same dimensions as another manufacturer`s `Extra Large`.
Make sure the bag fits well and that it`s the correct size – a bag that`s too big or small or a different thickness from the branded one can affect suction. Check for excess dust in the compartment after the first use, as this is a sign of an ill-fitting bag.
Your suction will be terrible. Your clogged filter will also make the motor work much harder than it should be. This will therefor decrease the lifespan of your vacuum and can even make it cut out if it starts to overheat. The filter will also start to smell over time.
If you don`t have a vacuum sealer it is no problem! You can easily create a natural vacuum seal using just plastic bags and the power of displacement using the the immersion method. This is the most popular method to quickly vacuum seal because it requires no special equipment and is very effective.
Depending on what you are wanting to seal, you can use any size vacuum bags, or even vacuum sealer rolls to make custom sized vacuum bags. However, we are using our quart bags, because it worked well with some popular portion sizes.
A full bag will reduce the effectiveness of your vacuum cleaner, as well as contribute to poor air quality. It could even cause damage to the machine itself which could be expensive or impossible to repair. The take-home message is: check vacuum bags regularly and replace them when they are more than half full!
I used drawstring kitchen bags, but large black garbage bags would work very well, as they are less prone to tearing.
Leather, silk, cashmere, thick wool garments, and any natural fiber materials that could be damaged by compression should not be vacuum sealed. This may include woven items, hemp, or items with feathers. Basically, if a garment should not be compressed or squashed, it should not go into a vacuum-sealing bag.
32mm is the most popular size for vacuum cleaners, ducted vacuum cleaners, and backpack vacuum cleaners. Nevertheless, some fewer standard sizes are 35mm, 36mm, or 38mm. The best way to find out what size will suit your vacuum cleaner is to measure the INTERNAL diameter of one of your old vacuum cleaner tools.

And the sizes are equally as customisable. So. whether you need a variety pack, jumbo or large storage bags, you can get them here. And they even throw in a hand pump for good measure!

For most models, the lowest setting is optimal for bare floors or thin carpeting. The middle setting offers the best suction for slightly fuller carpets. The highest setting is best for plush carpets or area rugs.
Measuring vacuum, as with any kind of measuring, requires standard units of measure. Inches or millimeters of mercury, torr, and micron are three units of measure typically associated with the vacuum furnace industry. Other fields of vacuum use Pascals (Pa or kPa.)
How to Reuse Your Vacuum Cleaner Bags (Yes, It`s Possible!) In a pinch, a vacuum cleaner bag is actually reusable. The bottom end of the bag is usually folded over a few times and glued shut.
Neglect your vacuum filter bags, and you`ll swiftly lose suction power. This, in turn, places unnecessary strain on your vacuum`s motor. Eventually, your vacuum will become a lot more difficult to maneuver, not to mention less effective at cleaning your rugs, carpeting, or other surfaces.
Leather, silk, cashmere, thick wool garments, and any natural fibre materials that could be damaged by compression should not be vacuum sealed. This may include woven items, hemp, or items with feathers. Basically, if a garment should not be compressed or squashed, it should not go into a vacuum-sealing bag.
Put your linen, blankets or clothing into the extra strong garbage bag. Pull the open end of the bag together and form a small circle shape. Place the vacuum cleaner pole into the circle shape and hold it firmly around the pole. Suck out the air by turning on the vacuum cleaner.
Vacuum packing is a method of packaging that removes air from the package prior to sealing. This method involves placing items in a plastic film package, removing air from inside and sealing the package. Shrink film is sometimes used to have a tight fit to the contents.
In general, bagged models tend to work more efficiently than bagless vacuum cleaners because they have an extra layer of protection for their filtration system. If someone in your household lives with allergies or asthma, it`s in your best interest to choose a model that will filter out the air as best as possible.
The biggest suitcase size is 32”. These are extra-large checked suitcases that often measure 31-32” with the wheel and handle, and they are rare.
3 mil pouches are sufficient for most sous vide recipes, since sous vide cooking temperatures are generally below 180°F. 4 mil and 5 mil pouches are thicker and most often used for cooking in temperatures higher than 180°F for long periods of time. Pouches are only intended for use with chamber machines.
Vacuum Pouch Length: add the length of the product you are sealing to the height of the product plus 2 inches. Example: for a 6″ wide, 7″ long, and 0.75″ high piece of meat, a vacuum pouch that is at least 8″ wide and 10″ long would be a good choice.
It is often recommended, however, that dust bags are replaced when they`re around two thirds full or once a month. Daily and extensive use of vacuum cleaners will create a need to replace dust bags more frequently.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly
ANSWER : The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

While vacuuming the red light for the bag of the vacuum came on and the vacuum stopped. The bag was no where near full so I replaced it with a new bag – same problem. It vaccumes for a minute or then stops with bag light on. It is the correct bag for the machine – so what’s the problem?
ANSWER : I’m assuming this is the Epic 6500 or similar model.
.Detach the hose, turn vacuum on. If it runs, place palm of hand against inport hole. If it shuts off the problem is with either the control valve setting or the control valve assembly itself.
.For cvs, turn dial on top of vacuum all the way to the largest dot, and try above test again. If that doesn’t work, then it’s the CVA. It needs to be cleaned or replaced, which is an in shop job. Fro repair, take it to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store. I recommend a full clean and service to remove any dust/dirt from the motor, fan assembly, and other internal parts.
.
.Another problem, which relates to the dial setting, is that fine dust will quickly clog the pores of the bag, resulting in the machine “thinking” the bag is full. Turning the dial to the proper setting helps get the bag fuller. The middle setting is the normal setting, and is for areas without fine dust and sand.

Won’t start. My son was using the vacuum & Didn’t change the bag. The vacuum was making the full bag smell, but the light was’t on & it didn’t stop. I stopped him, changed the bag, checked the filter, closed the compartments & turned on the vacuum. Nothing happened. I checked to be sure that it was plugged in, that wasn’t the problem. I’ve let the vacuum “rest” for several days, It still won’t start. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : There is a reset button at the back of the powerhead. The user manual can be downloaded from the electrolux website, although I didn’t find it very useful. There was some info on how to change the powerhead drive belt.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

I would really like to wash the outer bag of my vacuum, but I have a problem. I can remove the outer bag from the vacuum, but the plastic ‘frame’ that is inside the outer bag is sewn to the bag. So what am I supposed to do about that if I want to put it in the washing machine? I have the Oreck XL Silver.
ANSWER : Hi,

you can wash the bag. However you cannot wash the bag in the wash machine. What you will want to do is look for the screw or depending on the model, untwist the cap down on the rod next to the machine. that entire pole section will come off of the unit below with the bag there.

I recommend if it is warm outside to use the garden hose to spray it and scrub inside the bag with a scrub brush and some dish soap.

I usually throw them into the laundry sink and let soak, scrubbing with soap and water.

To dry the bag, a hairdryer or hang to dry before putting the piece back onto the machine.

Good luck.

Clogged vacuum Rather stupidly, my boyfriend 1) were vacuuming without a bag and 2) vacuumed up a big piece of cotton from a sofa cushion. And now it’s making a horrible noise and I see it vibrating where the tube connects to the machine. When you look inside there’s a white thing sticking out but it looks like it’s part of the vacuum. If it’s a clog, how do you fix it? I tried unscrewing the tray the bag sits in but it won’t budge.
ANSWER : You can start by taking off the bottom plate or top cover, which ever comes off, that is where the inlet starts going in and hopefully the clog is there. Could be in the hose also. But without the complete model number I can’t look it up to see a picture of it.
