How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Vacuum cleaners blow air out to keep the motor cool and this may feel quite warm. There is a safety cut out to switch the product of if there is a problem. If the product is not cutting out then it is ok! The warm air is perfectly normal.
Why is the vacuum is blowing dusty air out of the back? Simple: the bag or canister is full and the vacuum has nowhere to store the dust it is collecting. Empty the canister or bag. If that doesn`t fix it, the vacuum filter needs to be cleaned or changed.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
Vacuum emissions include salmonella and other bacteria that “have potential to spread infectious or sensitizing aerosols,” they concluded.
It will diffuse into space. Space is a near-perfect vacuum — its pressure is nearly zero and it has extremely little matter (in the empty parts, at any rate).
If the leak is located near the end of the hose, use a pair of pliers to remove the plastic connector from the end of the hose. Then, use a utility knife to cut off the end of the hose above the leak. Replace the connector and reattach the hose to the vacuum cleaner.
The most common problems found in vacuum cleaners are low suction force, excessive noise, burning smell, vacuum not turn on, and overheating. These issues can be fixed by either cleaning the device or replacing some parts of the device. At times, it is best to seek a professional to fix the cleaner effectively.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.

Answer: The vacuum has no air. Sound does not travel in vaccum.
All vacuum cleaners operate based on air flowing from the opening at the cleaning head or tool, through the vacuum cleaner and the bag and/or filter system and then out the exhaust port. This airflow is created by the vacuum motor, which also may be referred to as the suction motor.
Vacuum means the absence of all matter including air. As there is no air in the vacuum, air pressure will be zero.
It`s not advised to drive with a vacuum leak unless absolutely necessary. Aside from the dangers of having your car stall while driving, a vacuum leak can cause severe damage to your engine`s internals. This will lead to further costly repairs down the road. It`s best to fix a vacuum leak as soon as it`s detected.
Dangers of Ignoring Vacuum Leaks

As the vacuum pressure spurts out of the leaking hoses, it can overheat the engine, disable the engine systems it powers, and even create a damaging compression and timing issue.

We recommend dusting before vacuuming, this is because dust particles usually get moved around the room when you dust, meaning all your hard work will go to waste. A top tip is to wait at least 2 hours after dusting to get the vacuum out.
Fine particles. Fine particles are no match for even the strongest vacuums. Construction dust, makeup, used coffee grounds, fireplace ash, and other fine particles can burn out the motor and be released back into the air. It`s best to sweep these items up to keep your vacuum – and yourself – safe.
You don`t have enough ventilation.

But if your filter is dirty or clogged up with pet dander, dirt, or other air pollutants, it won`t do a good job of collecting new dust that pops up—which would end up settling on your bedroom`s surfaces. The fix is simple: Change the air filter.

A buildup of dust in your home is often the result of poor airflow. A combination of poor airflow and infrequent cleaning can lead dust and dust mites to settle comfortably into several areas in your home. “Dust mites live in mattresses, pillows, and upholstery,” Dr. Cajigal says.
For starters, keep your windows closed to help prevent pollen and other outdoor pollutants from infiltrating your rooms. To prevent dust, you should also consider placing doormats in front of every entrance and vacuuming often if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, which tends to trap dust.
Broken vacuum tube or hose: The most common cause of a vacuum leak is a broken, torn or disconnected vacuum hose or tube. Because of the extreme heat generated by an internal combustion engine, these plastic and rubber tubes can deteriorate or break and cause a vacuum leak.
If you don`t vacuum your carpet, the dirt will break down carpet fibers and create a breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria. In addition, your home will begin to smell musty from the dirt, mites, and other organisms settling into the fibers.
It depends on what needs vacuuming. Carpeted areas that aren`t used by four-legged fur-friends should be vacuumed twice every week. Hardwood and tile need the least amount of upkeep and should be vacuum cleaned once per week.
A vacuum is a space devoid of matter. The word is derived from the Latin adjective vacuus for “vacant” or “void”. An approximation to such vacuum is a region with a gaseous pressure much less than atmospheric pressure.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

When vacuuming floor the air release opens on its own
ANSWER : Sounds like you have a clog in the throat of the floor head. The air release assures air continues to feed and cool the motor.

Check the floor head for a restriction.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

My Hoover vacuum is not vacuuming the carpets or floors. When I release the tube to use the smaller end the suction works perfect. So i believe the problem is in the rods on the floor or in the part that vacuums the floor! Can you tell me how to fix it , or where can I take it to get it fixed?

thanks

ANSWER : Ive just had the exact same problem. In the very back lower portion of the vacuum You will need to take it apart. I guarantee there is a clog. You might also check your belts to make sure they are still on track.

I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner – MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I’ve had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. I checked with different outlets, used both front attachment and hose attachment. Checked the front part of the motor/ spiral case. This

Unbeknownst to me, someone took the bag out of my Kenmore Progressive vacuum and failed to replace it. I have been vacuuming without a bag for months, and today the vacuum stopped sucking. When I opened up the front to replace the bag, tons of dirt and dust came pouring out. I thoroughly cleaned the vacuum, put in a new bag, but still no sucking power. Just dust coming from the rear vents where one of the filters is. Is the vacuum ruined, or is it a simple solution of buying a new filter?
ANSWER : Sounds like you need to buy a new motor. All that grit and dust will ruin a motor and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did.
.This is where a vacuum that won’t run without a bag would have been nice. (Aerus for one)

The beater brush on my vacuum appears to roll when I turn on the vacuum however, you only hear the actual sound of it on occasion and the vacuum is not vacuuming thread off the floor.
ANSWER : Greetings from GoVacuum,
.
.Your belt has probably been stretched to a point, the brush no longer spins when it touches the carpet. You probably can turn the machine over, and see the brush spinning, but it’s probably stretched to a point where as soon as the agitator brush begins feeling any resistance created by the carpet, it just is not enough tension to spin the belt.
.
.Replacing the belt of your vacuum cleaner will most likely need to be replaced. Even though the belt might not be broken, we do recommend that you replace the belt every 6-12 months to ensure optimal performance.
.
.Usually you can find manuals on how to replace the belt, and what type of belt you will need in your owners manual (most manufacturers have these manuals available on line as well).
