How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If an unusual smell is emitted from your Dyson vacuum, it may be due to a clogged filter. As the filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odor. Remove the filter by twisting the purple dial labeled “filter” located at the top of the vacuum.
Maintain and clean your Dyson on a regular basis. Don`t hoover up obvious dirt that`s going to cause problems and bad smells. Allow the parts in your Dyson V6 to dry properly before reassembling the pieces. Remove the dirt from your Dyson V6`s bin often.
If there is a strong burning smell coming from the motor area of your Dyson DC14 or DC07 then it is most likely that your motor has burnt out.
Check the brushes – the brushes should be cleaned about once or twice a year at least. Make sure that the cleaner is unplugged when seeing to the brushes. 4. Wash the hose – dust and dirt particles get stuck in the hose and decay over time, causing your vacuum to smell.
`Get some pure peppermint oil and add a few drops on some paper towel, does a great job and is super cheap. `
Wash filters in cold water only

(don`t use detergent or wash in a dishwasher or washing machine). Rinsing under the water supply then gently squeezing the water out of the filter. Repeat until the water runs clear.

The Dyson DC07 was introduced in 2001 with brand new Root Cyclone technology.
The DC07 had a long production run from 2001 until 2008, and came in many different colour combinations.
Most Dyson vacuum have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked.
The air freshener is attached to the back of the vacuum cleaner where the vent is. Once the vacuum cleaner is switched on, the air suction will rotate the lovely-scented smell inside, eliminating any bad odours.
Larry recommends a “light spray or mousse” before using the Dyson Airwrap. He said: “If you want to use the barrels to create nice curls I would say it`s best to use a light volumising spray or a very gentle soft mousse.”
You can buy commercial carpet deodorizer powders, but you can also make a simple carpet powder at home with baking soda. This household item neutralizes odor, which can make your carpet smell better. You can use plain baking soda or stir in essential oil to add a pleasing scent.
Rinse the filter

Any fine dust remaining in the filter can usually be removed with a gentle rinse under a cold tap – hold the filter under the running water until the water runs clear. You shouldn`t need to use any detergent – just water.

Depending on your Dyson model, you may be surprised by the amount of dust and debris you`ll find inside it. So, `detach the hose from the wand, then clean its insides using a cloth pushed inside with the help of a broomstick or anything similar. `
We recommend replacing your air purifier filter every 12 months. That`s because over time, filters can get clogged with pollutants, and even let unpleasant odors back into the room.

Eventually, the filters will be clogged and the air flow going through the machine will be dramatically reduced. If no more air is going through the product, the air won`t be cleaned anymore.
I can confirm that Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde units are designed to filter out and remove 99.95% of pollutants and allergens as small as 0.1 microns. This will include things such as dust, gases, odors and domestic fumes.
There are two filters on a DC07, the first is the pre-motor filter, which are washable and is recommended by Dyson to be washed at least every 6 months. The pre motor filter also acts as a protection to the motor, trapping the smallest of dirt or debris from travelling to the motor.

There`s an additional model category sold by Dyson labeled “Outsize.” This is the most expensive kind of Dyson vacuum, with a price tag of $800 or more. Dyson`s Outsize vacuums offer a bit more suction power and a larger dust bin.
To recycle your old machine, you can bring it in to a Dyson Demo store or Dyson Demo Zone within 28 days of purchase of your new Dyson machine, show us the receipt or order confirmation email, and it can be recycled free of charge.
As the cleaner head and filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odour. You may need to remove and clean out the vacuum`s filter. We need to advise you to stop using your machine and request that you contact your local customer support team.

I had used Dyson DC08 to **** out a wet car carpet. A few days later when using the V/C, there was a burning smell. Subsequently I washed the flexible hose, changed the pre-filter and post filter , but I wrongly put the pre-filter in the spot for the post filter. When the V/C was next used, there was again a burning smell and sparks. The filters were switched, but the V/C would not re-start.
What shall I do?

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. My Dyson Animal has good suction and works fine for actually picking up dirt, but when I use the vacuum with the roller, I hear a grinding/rumbling noise. Its only when I use the vacuum with the brush rotating. It does not happen hen I shut the roller brush off. The belt is fine. I cannot figure out what is wrong as there are no clogs, debris, or foreign objects stuck in the brush or in the belt. The noise seems to be the only issue. The vacuum picks up fine. It just doesn’t sound right a
ANSWER : Trace the path of the suction into the tank and see if there is anything loose or ingested..Also, remove the brush and clean as best you can. Perhaps there is something caught in it. Lubricate where it makes sense with some WD40.

Have a Centralux Aerus about 5 years old. Don’t see a model number. There is suction but beater brush quit working. Was using for a few minutes, shut it off for a few minutes, turned it back on and suction only. Tried the reset button also. Tried the sidekick attachment and it works fine. There was no smell like something was hot. Belt is fine. Are there any fuses or anything else to try? This vacuum cleaner has not really been used that much, it is hard to believe the motor would need replaced
ANSWER : There probably is a loose wire in the handle near the switch or a wire off near the swivel elbow near the vac power head. With the right fastener tool to remove some screws you can fix it yourself

Problem: Vacuum motor won’t turn on. The power head operates, but nothing from the vacuum. Have checked all areas of airflow: hose, bag, motor filter and hepa filter. All are fine. Have checked and rechecked all electrical connections, all seem to be in working order. Vacuum hasn’t run for a week or so, so it’s not the thermal protector, unless it’s defective. Vacuum was running fine last week. Didn’t stop operating when using. Went to v
ANSWER : Hello! The culprit is the PCB Assembly;
Part # KC86WBZR3000…Cost is $6.99. I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Bissell lift off pet revolution vacuum smells bad when I vacuum!
ANSWER : Put a BOUNCE sheet inside the filter

My eureka vacuum won’t suction and starts to smoke when I try to use it. It sounds like it is suctioning when I first turn it on, but after about 20 seconds it begins to smell like burning and does not suction at all. I have tried cleaning and unclogging the filter and everything. It’s bagless so I don’t need a new bag.
ANSWER : The problem is that your belt is stretched and worn. This causes that burning smell and it also causes the vacuum to not pick up well. You need to replace the belt. Here is the belt you need and the manual with instructions:
