How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

For a vacuum cleaner to glide easily on a carpet, air must flow into the nozzle and through the machine. Block the air flow and the vacuum seals itself to the carpet and is hard to push. And, unfortunately, that`s what many consumers have discovered when their new carpeting is installed.
Slide the suction control to suit your floor type. Select the right cleaning mode for the right task. Position the slider to the left for use on deep- to medium-pile carpets, delicate flooring and rugs. Position the slider in the center for low-pile carpets and large debris.
Check the Rotator Brush and Wheels

Sometimes pieces of string or other objects get wrapped around your vacuum`s rotating brush or around the wheels of the vacuum. Unplug your vacuum. Turn it over and have a look at the wheels and brush. If you see any pieces of string or objects lodged there, remove them.

First check the airflow valve located under the handle. Sliding this open may make it easier to push your vacuum. It could also be that your suction is set too high. To fix, use the suction controls on the canister to adjust the suction settings.
While extreme suction power may offer peace of mind to homeowners who want to feel confident that their vacuums are effective at sucking up dirt and germs, it can be very damaging to your carpet and should be avoided! For high pile and premium soft carpet, be sure to avoid vacuums with concentrated or sealed suction.
The level you set your vacuum depends on the height of your carpet. For bare floors, use the lowest or bare floor setting, for short and medium pile carpets use a medium setting and finally, for plush carpets use the highest setting.
When we contacted Dyson about your question, a representative told us that the machines can be hard to move across thicker-pile carpeting because of their “extremely strong suction,” but that there should be no severing of fibers.
The best mid-range vacuum for carpets is the Dyson Ball Animal 3. This bagless upright is less sturdily-built than the Miele Classic C1 and less easy to maintain, but it`s still very good when dealing with debris on carpets.
A 1/2 inch height adjustment should resolve this and be easily added by Dyson. Put a flip switch on the vacuum head itself that raises it up higher off the carpet.
The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
Blockage – when a vacuum cleaner becomes unusually loud, it is normally because of a blockage of some sort. This is a problem that is easily solved by turning off the cleaner, check for blockages in the pipes, and remove them. You can also check and empty the canister to remove any possible blockages there as well.
We have two possible ways of adjusting the pressure in a vacuum system: first, by changing the pumping speed (altering the speed of the pump or throttling by closing a valve); second, through admission of gas (opening a valve).
Take your time. Vacuuming slowly will allow your machine to suck up more dirt and dust, and ultimately get your rugs and carpets much cleaner. Slow vacuuming allows the brush to agitate the carpet properly and suck up the unclean bits that emerge.
Vacuuming carpets every day is OK. Some households might not need to vacuum as frequently. Still, it depends on the living arrangements, the carpet`s traffic daily, and the possibility of pets and kids treading the carpets. With the appropriate vacuum, you won`t damage your rugs.
How often should you vacuum fabrics, carpet, and rugs? Anything with fabric or upholstery needs frequent vacuuming. Dust settles deep into the fibers, holding onto pollutants, bacteria, and unwanted smells. Plan to vacuum carpet and area rugs at least twice per week, even if they don`t look dirty.
Direct-Drive Cleaner Head

This tool is found in mid-priced options, the V7 and V8. It`s Dyson`s earliest standard brush roll option with a stiff and soft bristle combination, excellent at picking up debris on carpets.

The Dyson V15 Detect is, without a doubt, the best cordless vacuum for cleaning carpets. It has the best balance between debris pick up and range, enabling consumers to clean carpets exclusively without using the max setting.
For most models, the lowest setting is optimal for bare floors or thin carpeting. The middle setting offers the best suction for slightly fuller carpets. The highest setting is best for plush carpets or area rugs.
Common causes of tense muscles include trauma, overuse or repetitive stress, and poor posture. A sudden traumatic injury from lifting improperly, a fall or an accident, sometimes referred to as “throwing out your back,” typically leads to pain, inflammation and muscle spasms. This is considered an acute muscle strain.
One of the most common reasons for a vacuum that`s hard to push is using the incorrect suction setting. Most people want to use the maximum suction setting all the time, when in some cases this isn`t necessary.
You can use the switch on the Dyson High Torque cleaner head to further adjust the suction. Slide it towards the `+` for maximum suction for ground-in dirt. And towards the `-` for light dirt on deep pile carpets and delicate floor coverings, such as vinyl and lino, plus large debris on durable floor coverings.
The Dyson soft roller head (Fluffy) is specially made for hardwood floors and coated with antistatic carbon fibre filaments removes dirt and fine debris. Use the right accessories. While it may seem like an effort to change tools mid-vacuum, this will help you remove dust you can see, and dust you can`t.
Which Dyson vacuum is the most powerful? In terms of sheer suction power, the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is the most powerful option in Dyson`s current lineup, offering 290 AW, or air watts, of suction power. Among the brand`s cordless stick vacuums, the Dyson V15 Detect is the most powerful, with a rating of 230 AW.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.

The suction is good, but it can’t pick up most of the stuff on the floor. The hand held hose works very well, but it doesn’t even pick up little fuzzies reliably when I push it along. And, the suction is too hard I think because it used to push easily and now I have to push really hard, even on flat carpet.
ANSWER : Check entire length of hose, including the piece in the power head, for clogs. Simply drop a marble in one end and allow it to roll out the other. If it doesn’t, then the hose is clogged somewhere.

My carpet cleaner (bissell proheat plus) is not steaming, dispensing cleaner. Seems like there’s a little thingy that should be spinning or turning….. When I work a small area of carpet, it just leaves behind dry blobs of carpet gunk like pet hair. I had to use a carpet sweeper to clean up. FYI – I filled the cleaning fluid container and after trying to clean the carpet, it did empty out but the carpet isn’t wet. Any tips? The manual doesn’t help.
ANSWER : You need to replace the pump belt. Here is the belt you need:

Dyson suddenly hard to push on carpet
ANSWER : I know this sounds silly, but it works. Turn it over and wipe all the black residue off the bottom of it (off the plastic on the bottom that rubs on the carpet as you push and pull it). I thought my husband was out of his mind when he told me that was the solution, but it really works.

We have a Bissell Proheat Cleanshot 2X Model 9500 Steam carpet cleaner. The first time we used it things were great. The second time we used it it left tracks in the carpet. We have no idea what caused this. We tried using the machine on an entirely different carpet and it did the same thing. After vacuuming the carpet about 10 or 12 times, the tracks are still embedded in the carpet – HELP!!!! We’re read and reread the manual and contacted customer service and received no help.
ANSWER : First things first. It’s only the second time you have used the machine, so it must be fairly new. If you have a receipt and the unit is less than a year old you should take it to an authorized Bissell repair center and have the machine inspected under warranty.
.
.Otherwise, The jets on this unit clog easily, there are two of them and you can locate them under the recovery tank towards the front of the machine, and blow them out with an air compressor. To prevent the jets from clogging in the future make sure to flush all shampoo out of the machine with clean water when done using it. That is most likely your problem.
.
.If it is leaving black streaks on your carpet it could be coming from a burnt belt or melted brushroller part, in which case inspect the belts and brushrollers and replace the damaged pieces.
.
.I hope this helped
.
.Good Luck

I have a Bissell Pro Heat 2X carpet cleaner and the brushes spin, then stop. I turn it off and when I re-start, the brushes do not spin until I push foreward. The it spins and stops again. Both belts are tight. The brushes spin if held above the carpet, but upon contact with carpet it stops. Same thing on a hard surface.
ANSWER : The reason for the brushes to stop when it is above any surface is there is a switch in the handle that stops the brushes so it dont burn your motor up it may have a faulty switch.
