How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Much like when you turn on a smartphone or laptop, when you first place Roomba® on its Home Base®/Clean Base™, it will take around a minute and a half to fully turn on and boot up. The robot`s light ring will swirl white clockwise, and a tone will then play.
Check the Battery

If your robot won`t start, it likely means the battery is not holding a charge. Plug the battery into a power outlet and allow it to charge fully, and then insert it back into the vacuum and try again. Still having issues? You may need a replacement battery.

You can easily check the status of the battery in the iRobot® HOME App. A battery icon will be displayed in the top-right corner, indicating the current status of the battery.
It may take up to a minute and a half for your robot to reboot. The reboot procedure is complete when the light ring shuts off. Note: For 600 series robots, see below. Note: A robot reset will reset the clock of a non-connected robot.
Factory reset on a Wi-Fi Connected Roomba® and Braava jet®

e Series Robots: Press and Hold the Home and Spot Clean and CLEAN button down for 20 seconds then release. 900 Series Robots: Press and Hold the Dock and Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until all LEDs illuminate.

Roomba is a user-friendly model. You can run your Roomba without an app by using the “CLEAN” button to start, pause or resume your cleaning job.
A red light is normal and indicates the battery is too low to start. The light on the Home Base® will go on for approximately four (4) seconds and then turn off and remain off while the robot continues to charge. The light ring on your robot will illuminate to signal that it is charging.
With proper care, your robot`s battery should last at least 2-3 years before it needs to be replaced. Here are some battery maintenance tips to extend battery life and keep Roomba® cleaning at peak performance: Only use iRobot® batteries.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Charging time under normal conditions is at least 2 hours. For best results, use only the battery type compatible with your robot and ensure that it is an authentic iRobot Lithium Ion/NiMH battery that comes with Roomba or purchased from iRobot authorized dealers.
Made by iRobot, these robotic vacuum cleaners use sensors to detect walls and items in a room, becoming smarter the more frequently they clean.
It told TechRadar, it largely comes down to personal cleaning preferences. “We often hear from our Roomba customers with pets, kids, or who live in areas with a high-allergen count and dust and debris, that the greatest benefit for them is that they can run Roomba as often as they need,” it said.
Your robot probably has optical sensors, which require ambient light to operate. If you find that your vacuum is getting stuck a lot, don`t schedule your cleanings at night.
While the iRobot® HOME App provides many benefits, a Wi-Fi or App connection is not required for Roomba® and Braava jet® to clean.
The new iRobot Home App is here. With it, enhanced maps, the ability to clean specific objects, custom routines, seasonal suggestions, and intuitive smart home integrations*. Every aspect of the iRobot Home App has been redesigned to give you ultimate control over your clean. YOUR LIFE.
Most owners believe that running their robot vacuums four times per week is sufficient to keep the floors dust-free. However, if you have children or pets, you should use your robot vacuum more frequently. Daily vacuuming is recommended if you suffer from seasonal allergies.
Behaviors. Roomba® should charge in the following manner: If you are using a charger, the charger should have a solid green power indicator when it is plugged into an outlet. If you are using a Home Base®, the power indicator should blink approximately once every four (4) seconds when plugged into the charger or outlet …
Solid white: Fully charged. Pulsing white: Charging. Pulsing red: Charging, too low to start cleaning.
Improved Cleaning Performance: A Roomba with a second battery will have double the running time, allowing it to cover a wider area and pick up more dirt. 2. Better Battery Life: By sharing the workload between two batteries, the life of each battery is extended.
Pulsing red:

The battery needs to be charged. Leave the robot on the base. If it`s still not fully charged after 3 hours visit Why does my Roomba® or Braava® not turn on or charge properly?

If the charging dock light turns off, it indicates that Roomba is docked and charging rightly. The turning off the dock light will not stay longer. So, there is nothing to worry about it. If you feel or think that something is unusual, you can check the charging status of Roomba through the I-robot app.

Roomba Discovery My Roomba turns on and moves but the brushes won’t turn. Someone told me that I had forgotten to put in the yellow and black end bearings, but I did. Help, I miss my Roomba
I have a Roomba 530, I have had it for 2 weeks and really loved it. I have followed all the cleaning instructions etc.. Then the Roomba wanted it’s brushes cleaning “please clean Roombas brushes” So thinking that something was stuck I removed and cleaned the brushes, (yellow tabs on and in place by the way)
ANSWER : I read somewhere that you need to clear the software in case there is a glitch. To do this, take the battery out and then, simultaneously hold down the “spot” and “clean” buttons for 30 seconds. Replace battery. This has worked for my Discovery model.

I have a roomba 530 pet series. It appears that the brushes aren’t turning. They are free of dirt and debris and move easily when manually turned. But, You can tell there may not be a motor turning, because the roomba is more quiet than normal when you turn it on. Also, the hair just collects along the bottom of the brush and doesn’t get pushed into the bin.
ANSWER : The belt either broke or has come off the track…. this should be easily accessable from the underside of vaccuum

My Roomba 560 does not automatically dock as advertised either..
ANSWER : You may not believe this, but the new 500 series lighthouse virtual walls have both infrared and radio frequency communication. How they work and associate with the Roomba is pretty complicated. The best posting I’ve ever seen about how they work is here:
http://www.robotreviews.com/chat/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11048

Check out that link to understand how the communication works.

If your Roomba is contained by the virtual walls, then you can assume the IR sensor on your Roomba us good….you should test that though. Then you might have to replace the “home base” which could have a bad IR transponder . New ones can be found for reasonable price at www.RoboticVacParts.com or you could order straight from iRobot for twice the price.

If the Roomba is not contained by the virtual walls, then the IR sensor on the Roomba is likely bad and you’ll need to change the bumper on your Roomba. Again ….parts are available through ebay, or www.RoboticVacParts.com. Follow this link if you need it.

was a breeze and it now works great. My question is; The last battery I
bought ( not from you) was a full cased roomba battery pack that didn’t
last a year. Roomba says leave the r Roomba charging all the time so
it’s ready when you need it, and that’s nice but I feel that leaving it
charging like that it will kill the battery faster as it is always warm
to the touch. These battery’s should last at least 5
ANSWER : Dave you are correct. You should never over-charge anything like a Roomba, Cel Phone, etc. That will kill a bettery very quickly.

Roomba Discovery Roomba is fully charged and cleaned with sensor wiped clean. When turned on it it sounds normal and commences to go, but it then acts like it is putting on the breaks, spins, tries to go and manages a short distance and breaks again, just not making any progress because it keeps breaking after a foot or so and turns and tries again. Sometimes is gets so stuck from moving forward at all, like it is stuck in one spot just trying to go while seemingly surrounded by barriers. Somet
ANSWER : I had the same back-up, turn, move forward a couple inches, backup-up, etc. problem. Try cleaning/cutting the hair, etc. out from around the brushes, as well as around the ends of the brushes. Also, try a Q-tip to clean out the four pair of sensors (on my Roomba there are four pairs of little lenses under the bottom of the bumper) that (apparently) can cause the Roomba to think it is going over a cliff so it backs up. I didn’t have a can of compressed air, so I turned it over on the grass and went after it with a leaf blower..up close. Lots of dust came out and it has worked fine since.

My Dyson DC07 will not turn on. I was just using it and moved to a new area and plugged it in and it turned on for a split second and then it turned off and now it won’t turn on at all. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Loose wire, bad switch, or thermal cut-out. In any event, you will have to use a voltmeter to troubleshoot the problem, there is no way of knowing the problem otherwise
