How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Check for a plugged hose:

Plugged vacuum hoses are sometimes the reason for a loss in suction. Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it.

To power on the machine, step on the red Power Switch Pedal located on the back of the vacuum by the bottom.
Check to make sure the Vacuum Suction Knob is turned towards “Floor Suction.” Or there could be large debris clogging the brush roll rotation. Your dirt container may not be seated properly or may be full. Press the Tank Release button and remove.
You may have stalled the brush motor. To reset, turn off and unplug, then plug back in and turn on. The brush roll may have lodged debris or other entanglements keeping the brush from rotating. To fix, you`ll need to remove the brush roll to inspect.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
Locate the filter found on the left side at the bottom of the bag compartment. The filter can be hand washed with warm water. Once clean, let it dry completely.
If your vacuum cleaner keeps turning off, this could be due to the following reasons: Blockages – check the hose and head for any obstructions. Filter – always check your filters, if these are clogged this could be causing the vacuum cleaner to work harder and lose suction power.
Overheated Motor

If your vacuum was working fine and then suddenly shut off, it may have overheated. Most vacuums are equipped with a thermal protector safety switch that won`t allow the motor to run when it becomes overheated. You will need to wait for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your machine, to try again.

A strong odor from the shellac that coats the copper coil windings is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out. If the motor is still running, even if it turns on and off by itself as it is heating and cooling, you can still run the motor until it gives up for good.
The most common cause of vacuum pump failure occurs due to broken belts, electrical problems inside the unit, or vacuum hoses that fail.
Make sure the power switch is turned OFF. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws on the battery cover. Gently lift the battery cover then lift the battery out of the compartment and rotate it around so the battery rests on the bottom of the robot. It will still be connected by the wires.
Make sure the power cord and the plug are not damaged. If either are, contact our Consumer Care team. Make sure the outlet works by plugging in a cell phone charger or small appliance. If it doesn`t work, check another outlet.
Your CrossWave brush may have stopped working in the middle of your cleaning. It is likely that there is an obstruction. Don`t worry, we`re here to help. Unplug your machine to reset the brush.

The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
Water Can Ruin Your Vacuum Motor

If water invades the motor, you may have a completely failed vacuum cleaner. Again, not only will the water be inside your motor, but it will be carrying dirt and grime with it, making it unlikely (or at least very difficult) to restore the motor to a safe condition.

It is recommended to clean or replace your filters every 3-6 months depending on use. This filter is washable – Clean by hand washing in warm water. A mild detergent may be used if desired.
Make sure the power cord and the plug are not damaged. If either are, contact our Consumer Care team. Make sure the outlet works by plugging in a cell phone charger or small appliance. If it doesn`t work, check another outlet.

To power on the machine, step on the red Power Switch Pedal located on the back of the vacuum by the bottom. If there is still no power, unplug your machine from the wall. Check the entire length of the power cord, and discontinue use if there is any damage.

My Discovery 4210 Roomba will run normally for about 20 minutes on a smooth, wooden floor. It then begins the following sequence: run forward a few inches, turn in a tight counter-clockwise circle a few revolutions, stop, power off a few seconds, power up, repeat cycle from forward run. The sequence can be repeated seemingly endlessly if I don’t turn off the power manually. I’ve replaced the motor, and led revolution sensor system on the left drive wheel. ANSWER : Dear Michael_Stad,

I am going to sound like a broken record but here is my same answer to another person with the same problem.

I have I had the same problem with my Dyson DC16, where it only runs for a few.seconds at a time with each trigger pull. My husband called Dyson.(Canada) and without hassle they shipped us a replacement part which I.just received this morning. The replacement part sent to us is: DC16.Main Body with Rating Plate. It is also under warranty for 1 year. The.great customer service makes up for the flaw in the machine. Also,.Dyson is aware of the problem. Hope this helps.

I have a new Dyson upright vacuum. The vacuum will not stay on. I used it a couple of hours ago with no problem, but now it won’t stay on. It seems to be sucking and running normally otherwise. What can I do. Thank you. Donna Eakman
ANSWER : Hi Donna, My name is Don.
.
.When you say it wont stay on could you please advise the following:
.
.1. Does it cut out suddenly as you are using it?
.2. How long can you use it before it cuts out?

The motor running the beater bar on ny Electrolux canister vacuum cleaner runs intermittently. It runs about 2 minutes and then cuts off and automatically starts again after a 1 to 2 minute interval. I have tried taking it apart and removing the dust and grit in the beater bar attachment but with no change in operation. What would you suggest?
ANSWER : Check all the wiring connections to make sure they’re tight.
.1/2. Wiring to power nozzle motor or reset switch is loose.
.1. Cord from power nozzle to upper wand. If the plastic portion of the wand is cracked near the cord connection, or the connections are blackened, they need replaced.
.2. Wiring connection from hose handle to upper wand. Check for cracks and discoloration as in 1 above. Replace if necessary.
.3. Hose connection to vacuum. Not likely, but possible.
.4. There could very well be a break in the hose wiring.
.You may need to take your vacuum, with hose and power nozzle, to an authorized Aerus Electrux service shop. They can try a new hoze to see if that’s the problem. If there is a break in the wiring, the hose is probably worn in other areas as well, and should be replaced.

My Dyson DC-17 Absolute Animal does not stay running after I push start button. It will only run if I hold the start button down all the time.
ANSWER : Switches always fail on the dysons. its a pretty simple fix though. let me know if you need parts and/or instructions on repairing it.

I have an electrolux epic 6500 sr. The change bag light came on, I changed the bag, now it won’t run properly. If the bag is out and the hose attached it will run or if the bag is in and the hose is off it will run, but not if the bag is in and the hose is attached. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : First, if it runs without a bag, there’s a problem with the bag lock-out switch or wiring. This needs to be replaced/repaired by an authorized Aerus Electrolux technician.
.
.First, turn dial on top of vacuum counter-clockwise so the smallest dot lines up with the arrow. See if it stays on. If not, detach hose and turn vacuum on. Place palm of hand over intake. If it turns off, it’s possible that the tubes connecting to the CVA are clogged and simply need cleaned. This is most often caused by using “made to fit” Electrolux bags. Dust is sucked through the bags and into the motor compartment of the machine. All interior parts get covered in dust and need to be cleaned. If this is the cause, the vacuum is best cleaned and repaired at an authorized Aerus Electrolux store. If the vacuum shuts off, or won’t turn on before placing hand over the intake, it’s probable the control valve assembly is bad and needs replaced.

Another cause is an overheated motor due to clogged screen at back of bag well, full or clogged bag, dirty afterfilter, bad wiring/connections, clogged hose, clogged power head, or bad motor. It depends largely on the type and model of cleaner. Clogged wands are also a possibility, but unlikely.

Check and clean screen at back of bag well.

Replace bag. Make sure it’s a genuine Electrolux bag made by Home Solutions.

Check and replace afterfilter if necessary. These should be replaced after every six bags.

Broken and worn wiring connections are often found in the hose ends due to abuse and normal wear and tear. You can check the continuity of the hose using a continuity tester or multi-tester. If a multi-tester, turn dial to one of the Ohm settings. Place one probe into one of the terminals on the end of the hose. This will be referred to as T1. Touch the other probe to each of the terminals/connections on the other end of the hose. These will be T3 and T4. One of them should read zero, the other should read infinity. Repeat this with the other terminal, which will be T2.

Drop a marble in one end of hose and let it roll through. If it doesn’t roll through, the hose is clogged and needs to be cleared. Plug hose into the exhaust port of the vacuum, place other end in the in port. Turn vacuum on. This provides a blowing and sucking action which should clear the hose.
Detach hose from power nozzle (PN). Drop a marble into the wand end of PN. If it rolls through, it’s clear. If not, there’s probably a clog behind the brush where the intake opening is. You may be able to reach this through wand end with needle nose pliers, or either end with a knitting/crochet needle or a bent coat hanger.

If none of these “fixes” provide the answer to the problem, it should be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for diagnosis. Repairs or checks involving disassembly of the vacuum should always be done by an authorized Aerus Electrolux service technician.

The store nearest you can be found by following the instructions at the below listed link:

Hoover Recalls Self-Propelled Vacuum Cleaners

Consumer Complaints
Hoover Company Inc. has agreed to pay a $750,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that it failed to report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) the sale of vacuum cleaners with defective on-off switches that can overheat and cause the vacuum cleaner to catch fire.
.In April 2005, Hoover conducted a recall of 636,000 Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners because of defective on-off switches.
.In June 2004, after CPSC received notice of several vacuum cleaner incidents, the Commission staff requested Hoover provide a full report of incident information. In July 2004, when Hoover submitted a full report, it had notice of 260 consumer incidents, of which 141 involved reports of fire. Additionally, there was one report of a minor burn injury.
.Hoover first learned of a vacuum cleaner switch on one of these units overheating and melting in April 1999.
.Federal law requires firms to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial risk of injury to the public, presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or violates a federal safety standard.
.These Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners are plastic, upright vacuums with the brand name Hoover and words “Self Propelled” printed on the front of the product.
.Only those Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners manufactured between May 1998 and November 1999 are included in the recall that is the subject of this penalty.
