How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

This usually occurs if the dust cannister is too full or the filters are clogged and the motor wasn`t getting enough cooling air passing over it.

First, test the power switch for continuity to ensure that the motor is getting power. If the power switch has continuity, ensure that the blower wheel turns freely and is clear of obstructions. If power is getting to the motor, and the motor turns freely, but the motor still won`t run, replace the fan motor.
Check for a plugged hose:

Hoses can get clogged with hair, dust bunnies, string, or anything else that can`t pass through the other end of the hose. Airways inside the machine should be looked at as well. Wherever there is an air passage, check it. If it`s clear, move onto the next item.

During wind tunnel testing, the tunnel walls restrict the flow field around the vehicle and cause a local flow acceleration. This effect is called solid blockage.
How Do Wind Tunnels Work? Wind tunnels usually have powerful fans to move the air through the tube. The object being tested is placed in the tunnel so that it will not move. The air moving around the still object shows what would happen if the object were moving through the air.

Blockages or dirty filters may cause this to happen, the safety cut off will activate and switch off the electrical supply. If the cleaner has cut out, simply unplug and check for a blockage or dirty filters.
The most common reason for vacuum motors failing is overheating. Most `dry` vacuums have a flow-though motor. These motors use the air they have sucked up the dust with, to cool themselves. When there is a blockage, flow-though motors are unable to cool themselves due to the lack of airflow.
Why is the vacuum is blowing dusty air out of the back? Simple: the bag or canister is full and the vacuum has nowhere to store the dust it is collecting. Empty the canister or bag. If that doesn`t fix it, the vacuum filter needs to be cleaned or changed.
Another reason the vacuum is not turning on may be that the circuit breaker may have tripped. Check the breaker on the unit and if it continues to fail it usually means the motor is going bad. Another reason can be the bad signal from the unit to the wall inlet.
Start the engine and spray

Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.

Some vacuums have an in-line thermal fuse (often located between the switch lead and the motor coil). If the fuse is blown it will need to be replaced. – Check your home circuit breaker – it may have tripped. – Some vacuums have a brushroll on/off control.
A wind tunnel that is open on both ends and draws air from the room into the test section is called an open return tunnel. The tunnel at the lower right of the figure is an open return tunnel. A wind tunnel that is closed and re-circulates the air through the test section is called a closed return tunnel.
Traditional wind tunnels are classified by the speed of the air passing through the test section relative to the speed of sound (Mach 1). They are divided into four categories: subsonic (Mach <0.8), transonic (Mach 0.8 – 1.2), supersonic (Mach 1.2 – 5.0), and hypersonic (Mach >5.0).
A wind tunnel is a structure that has air flowing through it — usually in the form of a duct through which the air is set in movement by electric-powered fans (or another mechanism to the same effect).
Depending on test conditions in the tunnel, the motors can consume from 20 to 200 million watts of electricity per hour. Raw power alone is not enough to generate the supersonic speeds needed. The air from the compressors must be channeled through a nozzle and accelerated.
3.0 The Wind Tunnel Components

The wind tunnel is comprised of five main parts, listed in order from front to back: the settling chamber, the contraction cone, the test bed, the diffuser, and the fan housing with a variable speed motor.

Tunneling is a quantum mechanical phenomenon when a particle is able to penetrate through a potential energy barrier that is higher in energy than the particle`s kinetic energy. This amazing property of microscopic particles play important roles in explaining several physical phenomena including radioactive decay.
Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
Simply plug the product back in or restore the power and then switch off the appliance using the button on the control panel. The door will now unlock.
Vacuum cleaners are fairly simple machines. They need power to be transmitted to the vacuum to create a suction force that lifts debris. So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
Vacuum System Failures:

Reduces or eliminates effectiveness of the turn coordinator, attitude indicator, and heading indicator. Discovered by a low indication on the vacuum gauge or unusual instrument indicators. When the primary air inlet is blocked, the backup inlet automatically opens due to pressure.

Test that by turning the motor off and pushing on the center shaft, the armature. If it has any play, besides spinning, then replace the motor. If solid then replace the brushes – motor brush replacement instructions.

ANSWER : I had the same problem and used a tool to clean out the suction tube on my Windtunnel Series T. It was full of junk packed in tight. After cleaning it out there’s no more turning off or overheating. It actually works better than when I first got it (used from a friend).

I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner – MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I’ve had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. I checked with different outlets, used both front attachment and hose attachment. Checked the front part of the motor/ spiral case. This

The brush on my Hoover Windtunnel T series won’t turn when I’m vacuuming carpet. It does, however, turn when I’m vacuuming bare floor, and I didn’t think it was supposed to do that.
ANSWER : 1) test the belt +brush for worn and replace

My machine (Hoover Wind Tunnel – bagless) is only 1 yr. old. The agitator brush doesn’t turn all the time. I know it’s not supposed to turn when in the upright position. However, it only seems to work when I have the setting on high. When I stop, but have not put the machine in the upright position, it stops again and then slowly starts moving. Could the V-belt be worn out already? In the owner’s manual it states that this belt is not normally replaced. The exact same thing happened with my old
ANSWER : Sounds like you should do two things:.1- Remove and clean the beater brush of all debris as best you can. At the end of the brush you will see a hard rubber piece, at both ends, that holds it in place in the body of the vacuum..Add some WD40 between the brush and these pieces and turn until they move freely..2- When you reassemble, put a new belt on..

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I have a Kenmore canister vacuum – model 25614506. Some time ago, I was not able to turn the vacuum off with the on/off switch, but could still use the vacuum. Turned if off/on by pulling the plug. The other day when I went to plug it in, I heard a pop. Now the sweeper runs but the vacuum cleaner does not **** – no air flow. What could be the problem. The cleaner is only 4 years old.

Infinity Vaccum by Shark, model number NV31COS, will not start. The vacuum was running just fine until it grabbed the edge of a curtain. Turned it off to release the suction. Turned it back on and was working fine. About a minute later the vacuum was making an odd noise. Every 2 seconds or so it would “heave” (lack of a better word) then go away, then come back and so on. ANSWER : Place handle in low position and turn cleaner over so bottom side is up.
.Remove the 4 screws in bottom plate and lift off.
.Look on the left side of the agitator brush. You should see the belt there. Remove agitator brush roll and used belt.
.Discard belt.
.With lettering on outside of belt, slide new belt over motor pulley.
.Insert agitator though belt and place belt in belt guide on agitator.
.Grasp agitator firmly and fit it onto position by first sliding end opposite the belt into the rectangular slot on side of cleaner.Pull other side of agitator into place
.Turn agitator making sure belt is not pinched between agitator and agitator shield.
.If this does not take care of your problem, then check your filters for dirt and your entire vacuum for blockages. Both filters do come out. If you can’t get a new filter right away you can gently clean the paper filter and remove a lot of dirt. (I recommend outside)! The other filter is washable.
