How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Should the brush not rotate freely there may be debris tangled around the ends of the brush, carefully remove any obstructions or replace the brush with a new one. We recommend that you fit a new belt and brush once per year to keep your Reactive vacuum working efficiently.
Twist the lid until the arrows line up and open up the container to get to the hepa filter. Take the filter out and brush the dirt out, once a month wash the filter in warm water. Please make sure it is thoroughly dry before popping it back in – this may take around 24 hours.
First, test the power switch for continuity to ensure that the motor is getting power. If the power switch has continuity, ensure that the blower wheel turns freely and is clear of obstructions. If power is getting to the motor, and the motor turns freely, but the motor still won`t run, replace the fan motor.
Load is too small or unbalanced

For maximum performance, It is important that the load is evenly balanced inside the drum before the machine starts the spin section of the cycle. This will prevent the machine from excessive vibration and movement.

If you checked your brush roll, floor setting, and belt but your brush roll is still not spinning, that means you probably need a Shark micro switch replacement. This small switch tells the vacuums brush when to start spinning.
Clear the brush roll of any hair and debris and inspect by placing it on its end and spin. The brush should spin freely. If it doesn`t spin; it may be time to replace.
A washable HEPA filter should be cleaned by rinsing it under cold water. You should be careful not to touch the filter material, only allowing it to come in contact with water. Allow the filter to completely dry before reinstalling it.
HEPA filters are not designed to be washed and reused. Doing so will cause damage to the fibers which makes the filter ineffective and it will become void of its job. Once a filter has reached the maximum capacity of harmful particles, it will need to be replaced with a fresh, new one.
If you see a visible buildup of dust or particles on a HEPA filter (it may look gray or dirty) or observe reduced airflow through your portable air purifier, you may assume that`s an indication the HEPA filter needs cleaning. However, experts say HEPA filters should always be replaced rather than cleaned.
The Motor is not Spinning

Check to see if the belt is appropriately attached to the motor or broken. If it is not then place the belt in the appropriate position or replace it. If there is nothing wrong with the belt on the motor then the motor may be broken and will need replacement.

An imbalanced drum is a common reason for your machine not spinning. The easiest way to avoid an imbalanced drum is by making sure you don`t overload your washing machine, or if you have one large piece of laundry, add smaller pieces to balance out the load. You may also need to check that your machine is level.
A broken drive belt is the most common reason a dryer won`t spin. To fix this issue, turn the drum by hand. A working belt should provide some resistance, so if the drum turns very easily and loosely, the belt is probably broken.
The Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away has one rotatory belt. The belt is responsible for the mechanical rotations of the brushroll. Without it, the vacuum will not function.
Brushes. According to iRobot, brushes should be replaced every 6-12 months. Robot vacuums like the iRobot Roomba j7+ have multiple brushes that allow it to clean.
After a year or so, you may need to replace your vacuum`s beater brush. If the bristles seem to be squished, broken or are varying heights, it`s time to replace the brush. These can be found online with the vacuum`s brand and model of your vacuum cleaner.

WindTunnel HEPA Filter won’t spin
ANSWER : I just fixed my HEPA filter not rotating!!
.
.It involves taking apart the vacuum HEPA area. All screws are the same size. There are a LOT of ’em. Really straightforward putting it back together too.
.
.ok, once you take the HEPA canister area off the vacuum, careful with the wires! Unplug them from the controller board. You open up the HEPA chamber by removing more screws until you see where the motor that turns the filter is mounted on the side. Remove motor from the green chamber. Note where the washer goes. Once the motor is off, you’ll see that the center hub that drives the HEPA filter is rounded out. What I did was jam little bits of aluminum from a pop can into the space between the circle and the square to force the walls back to square. I started by folding a little piece of aluminum over and over so it was about three layers thick. Jammed that in. That wasn’t quite enough thickness so I shoved another piece with it. If you can find something that is about 4 times the thickness of a pop can aluminum, that’d probably work too. Slight wedge shape on the tip would help. Any sort of tiny shim.
.
.To test your work, just put a couple of holder screws into the HEPA cannister housing, plug in the cover/switch, plug in the HEPA moter. Turn it on for a few seconds to make sure the filter turns. Then you can add more thickness to the hub or put things back together.

.Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Typically the top filter of which is the sponge is washable but the HEPA filter is not, it can be brushed off and vacuum off with another vacuum, but the best filtration is to replace the HEPA filter and to wash the sponge filter, if the sponge filter get to bad then replace the sponge filter as well. Or, you can check with your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or to contact the manufacturer’s website and or phone #. Our problem with our Rainbow E Series is that it has sucked water up and blown it out through the lower part of the hepa filter, making the filter wet and dirty. This had happened before and the repair shop did not see any problems with the machine, so we replaced the filter and were very carful not to overfill the tank and to change the water often. Now it has happened again and ruined another filter. Do you know what could be causing this issue? Can the filter be cleaned or will a new one be

1. There is no reason to waste money on an EXPENSIVE replacement. While some people may like the fact that something that may be brand new may work better, this is not always the case.
.

2. You can easily set the filter out to try as long as there is NO WET ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, if so, you will be facing electrical damage
.

3. Once you have performed a natural or sun dry on the old filter, ensure to check your unit for anything that may have caused the back clog.
.

4. Back clogs for your model are often times associated with a BUILD UP of dirt and HAIR. YOU may always use pressure air for example at a gas station to flush out the build up.
.

5. Other occasions, users accidently build the vac WRONG causing continual backup and water going where it is NOT suppose to go.

Hepa filter stopped on Hoover Windtunnel 2 Model #U8361-900
ANSWER : This has a simple solution IF you have a air compressor with a high pressure nozzle. Outside the house, first remove the Dust bin completely and lay the unit down with the dust bin area up. now start blowing the nozzle at the hepa filter, Alot of dust will come out. Now start to rotate the filter while blowing the dust out. The filter will move one way easier, When there is no more dust reinstall the dustbin and check the suction and the rotation of the filter.

I have Hoover Widepath Bagless 12 Amp Windtunnel vacuum. Yesterday I was vacuuming and smelled smoke and it shut itself off. Today I cleaned out the filters (they weren’t bad) made sure nothing was obstructing the hoses or the spinning brush part. It turned on for 1 second, smells like smoke somewhere from the bottom and now won’t turn back on so I don’t know if anything is spinning or not. What can I do to fix this myself?
ANSWER : Hi There,
.
.When a vacuum cleaner smokes, it is usually only one of two possible problems.
.
.It could either be that your motor burned up, or that your belts burned. The belts on this particular model are notorious for breaking, but the fact that your machine doesn’t come on at all after this happened, sounds like it may be the motor.
.
.Both of these issues have a unique smelling smoke. If the smoke smelled like an electrical burning smell, this indicates it’s your motor. If the smoke smelled more like burning rubber, then it’s probably your belts.
.
.If the smoke smelled like burning rubber, here’s a video that we’ve recorded showing step by step how to inspect, trouble shoot, and replace the belts on your vacuum cleaner. If you open it up and the belts are still in tact, then this probably is a more serious problem of the motor burning out.
.

I had used Dyson DC08 to **** out a wet car carpet. A few days later when using the V/C, there was a burning smell. Subsequently I washed the flexible hose, changed the pre-filter and post filter , but I wrongly put the pre-filter in the spot for the post filter. When the V/C was next used, there was again a burning smell and sparks. The filters were switched, but the V/C would not re-start.
What shall I do?
ANSWER : Hi there,
