How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

The most common cause of loss of suction is that the filters have become blocked. They may require cleaning or replacing. Another cause could be that the vacuum cleaner hose is blocked.
Filters need to be cleaned

Rinse the filters with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Let the filters dry fully before putting them back into the vacuum. If your vacuum is still not picking up dirt, you may need to replace the filter.

If you`ve noticed that your Vax vacuum cleaner isn`t performing as well as it usually is and not picking up, the most likely cause would be a blockage. Remove the floorhead and place your hand over the tube. Turn the model on and see if the suction is stronger.
One of the easiest ways to increase vacuum cleaner suction is to empty the dust bag or container. Dust containers need to have enough space for airflow, otherwise, they could get clogged and have less suction power. Regularly check your dust compartment and empty or change it when it`s already 70-80% full.
Suction too high

If the vacuum is hard to push, the suction could be too high. Make sure the power button is on the right setting for the respective surfaces. Position I is for bare floors and position II for carpets and rugs.

There Is a Blockage

If there is anything blocking the floor nozzle, the vacuum will not pick up debris. To check for blockages, first, check all openings on the dust cup and remove anything in the way of the openings. Reinsert the dust cup. Next, remove the wand from the vacuum and look inside for any blockages.

Check the Rotator Brush and Wheels

Sometimes pieces of string or other objects get wrapped around your vacuum`s rotating brush or around the wheels of the vacuum. Unplug your vacuum. Turn it over and have a look at the wheels and brush. If you see any pieces of string or objects lodged there, remove them.

The two main indicators to determine vacuum power performance are water lift and airflow. The water lift is measured in mmH2O, mbar or kPa. It represents the suction force and is the reference parameter for vacuuming liquids and heavy materials. The airflow is measured in m3/h or in l/s.
Technology. A vacuum`s suction is caused by a difference in air pressure. A fan driven by an electric motor (often a universal motor) reduces the pressure inside the machine. Atmospheric pressure then pushes the air through the carpet and into the nozzle, and so the dust is literally pushed into the bag.
So, the usual areas that cause suction loss include the wrong height setting, stuck rollers, a faulty gasket, a broken vacuum belt, a filled bag, or a clogged hose.
Gravity and friction are the two main forces that make vacuum suction work. While gravity pulls molecules in the air toward the earth, creating an atmospheric pressure, the suction cup and vacuum pump cause a pressure difference, attaching both surfaces.
There can be a variety of reasons why your vacuum cleaner has low suction. It could be clogged filters, a dirty bag or container, or an obstruction in the hose. Check all these areas and replace any parts that need it to restore full suction power.
Often when your machine is not picking up it is due to loss of suction. If your vacuum cleaner turns on but won`t pick up on carpet or bare floors, something is impeding suction. You may need to change the vacuum bag, unclog the hose, replace/clean the filters, replace the hose, change the belt, or repair the motor.

My filter queen just had the motor rebuilt last year and was basically a brand new unit when I got it back. It is not picking anything up now when I vacuum. The beater bar on the carpet attachment is turning fine and when I take all the attachments off the hose I can feel the suction being created like it should be picking up debris just fine. I have emptied the canister even when it did not have much in it; however, it still will not pick anything up off the carpet. It picks up debris tempo
ANSWER : It sounds as if you have a clog inside the “Power Nozzel”. They mention that there are “no user serviceable parts within the Majestic® Power Nozzle” My advice would be to see if you can see a clog with in reachable distance and try to remove the clog. One way to check for a clog which may work for you is to remove the attachment and shine a flashlight on one of of the attachment and look through the other side and see if you see light, if no light, most likely a clog. Past that you might void the warrenty if you try and open it up the Power Nozzel itself. You may want to ask a Phone service rep about clog removal.

Wont pick up
ANSWER : Mine was doing this soon after I bought it. I had to cut the strings, and hair off the brush…cleaned the filter (plastic one) and then it seemed to do better. I still have problems with it getting clogged in the tube once in a while…I usually take a broom stick and push it through…I also have a Kirby, I tell ya I am thinking of spending the money to have it fixed because these cheaper ones aren’t very good.

My steamvac wont pick up the water. it is spinning and blowing out the water, but it wont **** it back in
ANSWER : The most common reason for lack of pick-up is that the lid is not seated firmly on the recovery tank. Lack of pick up is always caused by an air leak. A less common possibility is that the large round rubber seal that the recovery tank sits on has fallen out of place. If you look at the bottom of the tank, you will see a round hole. When you install the tank, this hole sits on top of a rubber seal on the motor shell. Be sure the seal is in place.
