How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Poor Commutator or Ring Condition

A rough, out of round, or otherwise poor contact surface can cause accelerated brush wear. A poor commutator condition can lead to both electrical and mechanical wear of the carbon brush.

The typical life expectancy of vacuum motor brushes is around 800 to 900 hours of use; the bearings or the armature usually fails shortly after.
Many universal motor malfunctions are caused by wearing down of the carbon brushes, the soft blocks of carbon that complete the electrical contact to the motor`s commutator. When these brushes become worn, the motor will spark, and electrical contact may be incomplete.
Poor Performance

Your tool may need a little jolt now and then to get going, or perhaps its RPMs have started to slow down. If your motor is really hurting, the machine may stall out completely. Any of these symptoms may point to a worn carbon brush.

The good news is that buying electric toothbrushes is a good investment. Manufacturers advise that electric toothbrushes need to be replaced every three to five years. Most manufacturers offer a guarantee and allow you to return it if you`re not happy with the results, but this is dependent on the company.
Brushed motor life is limited by the brush type and can attain 1,000 to 3,000 hours on average, while brushless motors can attain tens of thousands of hours on average, as there are no brushes to wear. The limiting factor is the wear on the bearings.
Yes, Dyson vacuum cleaner brushes do wear out due to them continuously rubbing against the carpet. Just like a toothbrush, the vacuum cleaner roller bristles can flatten and get too soft. That`s why Dyson vacuum cleaner brushes should be replaced regularly.
Brushes being installed incorrectly or the wrong sized brush being fitted. Brushes experiencing damage due to electrical underloading or overloading. Winding faults. Voltage surges to the motor.
Generally, if the brush is worn down to 1/4th of its original length, it is time for replacement. If you need to replace your brushes make sure that the brush is the correct dimensions, type and grade for the motor. Typically you can find this information in your motor`s manual.
AC induction motors and BLDC motors do not depend upon the mechanical system (brushes) to control current. The AC and BLDC motors pass current through the stator (electromagnet) which is connected to AC power directly or via a solid-state circuit.
If washed regularly, makeup brushes should last much longer than makeup sponges. We recommend replacing your makeup brushes about every 1-3 years.
Bruises usually fade away in about 2 weeks. Over that time, the bruise changes color as the body breaks down and reabsorbs the blood. The color of the bruise can give you an idea how old it is: When a bruise first happens, it`s kind of red as the blood appears under the skin.
Carbon brushes typically last between two and ten years on most machines depending on frequency of use.
Irregular Spring Pressure

Springs maintain the all-important contact between the commutator and brushes, meaning that unequal spring pressure results in unequal wear.

Carbon brushes will on average last between 1 and 5 years in most power tools but this is all dependant on how much they are used in number of hours, the more daily use the power tool has the quicker it will wear over a certain period of time.
Eventually, if brushes are not replaced, they can continue to damage an armature and cause overheating or smoke.
Vacuuming every day, or even a few times a day, is not going to create any long term problems. `But,` you might be thinking, `doesn`t the brushes spinning over the carpet on a beater bar wear it out? ` Sure, but a very small amount.
A Dyson vacuum cleaner has a lifespan of around 10 years. This is considerably longer than most other vacuums. So, if you`re looking for a high-quality vacuum cleaner that will last you for a long time, a Dyson could be a good choice. However, remember that Dyson vacuums are expensive.
Low battery level

It sounds simple but a dead battery is the most common cause of the vacuum powering down while in use. Charge the vacuum battery for a minimum of 2 hours. After the battery is fully charged, power on the device.

If your motor brushes are sparking, it may be a sign excessive brush wear, a damaged or dirty commutator, or an incorrectly installed or incompatible brush. Some sparking is normal within a tool, but if it starts to get worse, it`s likely a sign that the carbon brush is wearing.
If the brushes are too tight in the holders, their proper motion will be restricted so that they cannot maintain contact with the commutator and sparking may result. If they are too small, they may wobble in the holders and thus tend to break contact with the commutator and bring about the same result.
Some manufacturers estimate 30,000 hours, while others state 40,000 hours. Some will say “it depends.” One thing is clear—a motor should last much longer with a conscientious motor systems maintenance plan than without one. Motor life can range from less than two years to several decades under particular circumstances.
There are two types of commonly used DC motors: Brushed motors, and brushless motors (or BLDC motors). As their names imply, DC brushed motors have brushes, which are used to commutate the motor to cause it to spin. Brushless motors replace the mechanical commutation function with electronic control.
A carbon brush is a really just a small square of carbon that is used to carry a current through your electric motor. Without a carbon brush, the electric motor wouldn`t work.

.(2) Remove the brush assembly by pulling/unlatching it from base on each side.
.(3) Does one of the brushes have the drive pin present? It should be about ¼ inch square, and two inches long. It attaches the brushes to the drive mechanism.

Now that I just fixed my Lux Legacy canister vacuum, I need help on my other Electrolux Regency Series upright! The vacuum works fine but the rotating brush does not work and the brush motor does not turn on. Tried cleaning the brush and hitting hte reset button to no avail. This upright has a triple setting switch and I checked the each of the wires seem to be attached. Tried rotating the brush by hand and it would not budge. Was going to “encourage” the brush to turn with a set of articula
ANSWER : There are a couple rectangular holes on the bottom of the power nozzle, beside the wheels. These have tabs in them that need released with a standard screwdriver.
.rogerpotts_10.jpg.Once they release, turn the vacuum over and lift cover of power nozzle at the back. This pulls the front of the cover out of the lip on the “bumper”.
.Once this is done, you’ll need to unscrew the screw at each end of the brush. Lift the brush out and thoroughly clean it, including the ends.
. rogerpotts_9.jpg.
.Check the wiring to make sure they’re connected to the terminals of the motor. Also, check the belt for wear and tear. These belts can last for five years or more, but if it looks bad a good time to replace it is while you have the power head apart.
.When reassembling the vacuum, ensure the belt is fitted properly around the motor shaft and brush.
.Insert the front of the cover first, ensuring the edge fits neatly beneath the lip on the bumper all the way around. It takes a little manipulating to press the back into place. Make sure both tabs click into the locked position. Turn the vacuum over and reinstall screws. Try to rotate brush by hand a few times.
.At this point, plug the vacuum in and turn it on. If the power head doesn’t run, press the reset button. If the power head motor still doesn’t run, it could be due to loose or disconnected wires that lead to the reset switch, a bad reset switch, or even a bad motor. The vacuum needs to be taken to the nearest Aerus Electrolux store for further diagnosis and repair.

Bissell PowerForce Turbo: The motor spindle becomes very hot while spinning, causing the new belt to burn and break. Is this because the motor is overheating?
ANSWER : Something is preventing the brush roller from turning even though it seeems to be OK when not in contact with the floor. The motor shaft is spinning on one spot of the belt, causing the heating, the smell, and eventual belt failure. I have had brush rollers that appeared OK but proved to have pet hair jammed between the end caps and the roller itself causing rotation to be very difficult
