How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Open the cap on the handle and slide the wand upwards until both the wand and hose release from the machine. Press the button on the end of the hose and remove the wand. Press the button on the bin handle and remove the bin. Press the tab on the base of the hose to remove it from your machine.
Some attachments may have a “Release” button–if so, hold down the button while sliding the attachment off. The back of the vacuum has slots to hold up to two vacuum attachments. To store, simply place the attachment onto the circular slots.
Firmly push the red bin release button. The bin will slide down, cleaning the shroud as it goes and the bin base will open. The bin base won`t open if the red bin release button isn`t pushed down all the way. Press the red wand release button and pull the wand away from the bin.
The hose is electrically attached to the other components of the vacuum. Removal of the hose will require electrical components.
Hold the floor tool as best as you can using your foot and twist the metal pipe.. this should `break the bond`. As soon as you have movement after twisting the pipe, you should find that it pulls free.
There are two ways to remove a spigot hose. One way is to hold the fitting with one hand and unscrew it with your other hand, counterclockwise. Another method is to use pliers or an adjustable wrench, turning them clockwise while holding onto the faucet itself so that you don`t damage the fixture itself.

5 yr. old Miele s514 Turbo plus’s power nozzle brush seems to disengage temporarily, stopping the spin. Then it seems to re-seat itself after a few seconds, then starts spinning OK. I keep the nozzle brush very clean, so there is no hair or yucky stuff to cause it to jam. Please help.
ANSWER : I had a White Pearl with same problem. As I moved the hose/wand the brush motor would start stop. Find out where the circuit opens up by holding one part and moving the part that connects to it – 1) where the hose plugs into the cleaner, 2) the swivel connection at the cleaner, or 3) the swivel connection where the wand plugs in. There are brass bands around the hose with brass “fingers” to make electrical contact. Mine had a bunch of gunk, dust, corrosion on the band at the end of hose that plugs into the cleaner. Pulled it apart and now it works like a champ. A bit tricky to get the pieces apart (hidden plastic clips which you don’t want to break), but it can be done.

No Water My Bissell rug shampooer does not eject water or saop whan I pull the saop trigger on the handle. I checked both filters and they are clean. Then, I removed the container that sucks up the water and pulled the saop trigger, water barely came out of the tubes. I tried to clean the rug in our family room and the rug was not wet when I finished, no water coming out to clean the rug. HELP HELP HELP!!! I live in Colorado is there a Bissell repair shop near Denver, HELP!!! Thanks Dominick ema
ANSWER : Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn’t squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle also, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can’t spray, just re-fasten it down.

The removable filter at the front is cleaned regularly, and is not clogged. However, the machine appears to be suffering from being clogged by dust, as it has started to make a high pitched noise, and I fear it may burn out. I can see some dust inside the front panel but cannot see how to remove the front to clean it out. (NB. I have located two screws – one on either side – but cannot see how to proceed further.) Please help! Thank you.
