How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

A possible cause might be that the tank is not properly seated. To assure the tank is seated properly, pick it up and re-seat is so it sits snugly on the unit. If this doesn`t fix the problem, make sure the tank is assembled properly. To make sure they are both latched properly, pick the tank up by its handle.
If your carpet is damp, but there is no dirty water collected in the white recovery tank, check the dome filter on the top of the machine. Check the wire mesh filter for any blockages, you should be able to see light through the filter. Clean under a tap if the filter is clogged.
WHY WON`T THE MACHINE PICK UP? The float in the dirty water tank may have been activated. Empty the dirty water tank and wait for the float to settle before re-starting the machine.
The spray tip may be clogged. Use a paperclip and insert it into the spray tip to remove a clog. Now plug back in, making sure you are using a working outlet. You will know, as the Ready light will begin to blink when plugged in.
Check your hose for any cracks or holes that can cause loss of suction. You may also have a clog in the lower hose. Pull down and at an angle to disconnect. A clog in the main hose could also be the problem.
If you don`t use the right detergent and clean water, residue can be left on your carpet after washing. The traditional method of cleaning and rinsing your carpet will leave soap and shampoo residue that will turn into mildew over time. As a consequence, it will quickly become covered in dust and dirt.
Clean the filter screen located at the back of the dirty water tank. To re-fit, tilt the dirty water tank and line the front of the tank up onto the carpet washer. Push back until it clicks into place.
Multi-Surface Hard Floor Cleaning

The Vax Glide is suitable for cleaning sealed wood floors, laminate, lino, vinyl, stone & tiles. A trigger on the handle allows you to dispense water & solution, and high mode helps to tackle tough & stubborn stains.

Heating Element. A common cause to your cleaner not producing steam can be a failed heating element. As the heater is used to heat up the water, if that has ruptured or burnt out your steam cleaner will not produce any steam. With the water tank filled and switched on the steamer should sound like a boiling kettle.
First, check to make sure the unit is plugged in and is in a working outlet. Next, check to make sure there is water in the tank. It is very important to make sure you are ONLY using water to fill the tank. Other solutions may cause breakdown of the gasket and/or other parts of the machine.
Mild dish soap, diluted with water: Dish soap (ideally dye-free) will gently remove stains without damaging rug fibers. Avoid using too much soap, especially on wool.
Sprinkle baking soda onto wet carpet areas, then let it dry for at least 24 hours. For tough stains, mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups water and pour onto the area before letting it dry for at least 24 hours. This will help remove odors and kill bacteria in your carpet.
Baking soda is the perfect main ingredient for any homemade carpet cleaning solution. The reason baking soda is so effective at removing stains from carpet and various other materials is because it`s an alkaline product that produces carbon dioxide gas when it has a reaction.
Broom and Dustpan

You can use a small dustpan or one with a handle to reduce the need to bend. Start at one end or corner of the carpet and work toward the other end to avoid missing areas. Use short, quick strokes. If debris begins to pile up, sweep it into the dustpan before you reach the end of the job.

Carpets that still look dirty or have stains reappear after cleaning is a result of something called wicking. This is due to over wetting the carpet, the backing, and pad which causes them to return back to the surface once dry.
Yes, you should keep cleaning the carpet until the water is clear. This will ensure that your carpets are clean and free of dirt, dust, and other allergens. However, you should be careful not to scrub too hard or use too much water. Doing so can damage the carpet and lead to more stains in the future.
Moisture can facilitate mould and mildew growth in wet carpets and the spores can trigger allergic reactions if inhaled. The mucous membranes and nasal passages start to swell up, resulting in symptoms like excessive coughing and sneezing. In some cases, it can even cause eye irritation and breathing difficulty.
Use a solution of hot water and detergent, and scrub all interior surfaces. Sediment, algae, rust, and biofilm can be gone with a pole-mounted brush or a power washer. All hoses, pumps, and pipes used to fill and empty the tank should be cleaned and rinsed.
The only vinegar that works for cleaning floors is distilled white vinegar. The simple kind. It has an acidity of 5 percent which is perfect for cutting through grease, grime, and dirt. It is also cheap enough that you can use tonnes of it in cleaning all your surfaces, and still not break the bank or your budget.
Use baking soda to create a powerful cleaner for tile and other types of flooring. Mix ½ cup of baking soda in a bucket of warm water, mop the floors, and rinse. Note: this method should not be used to clean floors that have been treated with wax, such as hardwood flooring, as it can damage the finish.
Mix your purchased descaler or mix 1 1/2 oz. of baking soda with one quart of clean water. Fill the empty tank with this mix. Seal the unit and turn the steam cleaner on so that it begins heating.
– Be sure to clean your water tank regularly – excessive buildup can block water passages causing water to spill out of the body of the steamer instead of flowing smoothly to the boiler. Use a 50% distilled water solution, 50% distilled vinegar solution regularly to prevent buildup of mineral deposits.
There is condensation in the stand steamer`s hose

To solve this, lift your stand steamer`s head to straighten the hose vertically and hold your steamer in an upright position: This will allow any condensation and steam to flow again. After this, your stand steamer should steam again.

No Water My Bissell rug shampooer does not eject water or saop whan I pull the saop trigger on the handle. I checked both filters and they are clean. Then, I removed the container that sucks up the water and pulled the saop trigger, water barely came out of the tubes. I tried to clean the rug in our family room and the rug was not wet when I finished, no water coming out to clean the rug. HELP HELP HELP!!! I live in Colorado is there a Bissell repair shop near Denver, HELP!!! Thanks Dominick ema
ANSWER : Does water squirt out of the hose nozzle, if it does, then check the heater inside the handle asm. Make sure that where the tubes hook up to it are not clogged. If water doesn’t squirt, check for the seal at the bottom of the tank, it needs to be on the tank, not in the hole, this is for the soap bottle also, there is a seal on the bottom of it as well. The flow indictor cap is leaking air or maybe is too tight. If you had the top cover off, make sure that the tubes are routed right so as not to get pinched when the cover is put back on, the smart mix knob should be in the water setting and that the piston is on the bottom of the smart mix knob. Pump is bad. Try running a mix of vinegar and water to see if that unclogs the lines. Is the top cover and the base tight together in the back, sometimes the top breaks loose and it will raise up and it can’t spray, just re-fasten it down.

I have a Bissell Pro 2x carpet cleaner. The water heats properly as well as spraying the cleaning product. However, when I go to suction the water from the carpets, the 2 in 1 water tank bladder works properly but there is no dirty water outside the bladder. I have only used this carpet cleaner ~ 5 times and in the beginning I had to empty the suctioned water quite frequently as it was dirty and it could not not hold any more water. So I have done 1 room and all the dirt remains in the carpet
ANSWER : Check that the suction cone is not blocked. Check that the filter or hose to the bladder isn’t blocked as well.

The Hoover Steamvac Widepath will NOT pick up water. The dispenser with cleaner DOES have water. The TANK that would receive the dirty water is NOT full. All tanks are on properly and the machine will still not pick up the used water. I found a tear in the interior hose leading to the receiving tank and repaired throughly with electrical tape. Still will not pick up the water. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Sounds like a clogged air path (no vacuum action) from the floor pick-up to the collection tank. Take the tanks off and deal with the vacuum problem alone. The collection tank should have a air exit vent–is it clear? Check the interior hose that you repaired–is it clogged? Remove the bottom plate and inspect the air path from it. Because this machine deals with water, clogs can become like concrete! Hope this helps!

We have the water hooked up at the back of machine. there is a spout for the water to come in and fill the ice tray.but is does not. If we turn the water on it fills up the space under the ice basket. I keep getting red light and then the two smal llight one ice and one water come on. We can hear the motor trying to fill the ice try and then lights come on. Please help me this so I can use this product. It did not come with a manual.
ANSWER : The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice maker needs water. If the valve doesn’t seal good because of sediment or wear it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube it will freeze blocking the fill tube.. You can take the water line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.
With the fill tube blocked with ice the water can drip down the back wall or drip into the ice bin or just stop up. You can use a hairdryer to thaw the tube out.
