How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

When a central vacuum continues to run without a hose plugged into a vacuum wall port then there is a short in the system. Be sure to unplug the central vacuum unit to stop the vacuum from running and then follow these steps to determine where the short is and what to do about it.
Why won`t my power unit shut off? Make sure the unit is in the Auto mode and that there is not a hose plugged into a wall valve. Unplug the low volt wire at the side of the unit, if the unit continues to run, the relay in the pc board is faulty and the entire pc board needs to be replaced.
NuTone® PurePower™ Series Central Vacuums combine powerful suction and unmatched filtration, to remove dust and other allergens from your home. Central vacuums exhaust the vacuumed air outside of your home unlike a traditional vacuum that recirculates air back into your living area.
The Low Voltage System consists of a small wire that follows the pipe from the inlets all the way to the Power Unit. Similar to a doorbell, closing the circuit activates the device on the opposite end. The inlet valves have two small contact points inside that mate with the hose.
Without a vacuum system, air and other noncondensable gases would severely reduce the heat transfer in the condenser, and the plant would require a condenser with significantly more surface area for the same thermal load.
A Central Vacuum relay or contractor is an electrically operated switch assembly that allows the Central Vacuum to turn on or off by completing the circuit and sending power directly to the central vacuums motor.
Broan-NuTone™ exhaust ventilation fans allow your home to exhale, eliminating humidity, odor and airborne particulates from your bathrooms, closets, mud room, laundry, work out space and more.
Filters maintenance

Your central vacuum is equipped with two filters. The anti-clogging filter (thin fabric) stops the larger particles, and the Cyclofiltre (thick fabric) catches the microscopic particles.

8) How does the central vacuum system turn on and off? From the hose handle you have a switch that turns on or off the electric floor brush and/or the central vacuum motor. Each inlet is wired back to the central vacuum unit with low voltage wire.
Central vacuum without a bag

A central vacuum that does not use a bag, has other perks just as attractive. First, the cyclonic suction assures a constant suction power while preventing the motor from overworking. Also, saving on dust bags is significant and eco-friendly!

Ultrasonic Acoustics (UA) method can be used to detect air ingress into the condenser. As air is drawn into the condenser creates turbulence with strong ultrasonic components and which can be identified by specialized detection equipment.
Pulling a vacuum is a common part of air conditioning repairs. Vacuums are used to evacuate ACs, a process by which they pull out all air and moisture from the refrigerant system prior to testing, repairs, and recharging.
A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.

My home has a central vacuum system hook-up but no vacuum installed. My friend upgraded his central system and gave me his Eureka Mega Boss central vacuum system and the accessories, including the pow
ANSWER : The power head requires 120 Volts. Some hoses have a receptacle in the handle for the power head plug, and the hose has a cord at the wall inlet end that plugs into a receptacle. Some hoses have a plug at the wall inlet end that plugs into a 120Volt receptacle built into the inlet. The hose plugs into this receptacle when you push the hose into the inlet. The power for this built-in receptacle is wired with line voltage when the system is installed.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

I have a central vacuum system. When I disconnect the hose from a wall outlet the central canister does not shut down dispite my turning off the vacuum at the handle of the hose. The only way I can get the system to shut down is to pull the plug at the canister.

What gives?

Rob

ANSWER : What I’m hearing is the canister(Not the Powerhead) portion of the unit is running all the time unless you unplug it. this problem could be caused by a short in one of your low voltage lines running through the house. To determine that just unplug one/both low voltage lines from the canister, and plug it back into the recepticle. If it doesn’t start up then you figured out that it is in the house somewhere and not the unit. If it is in the house I would check for water in the valves, or you’re just gonna have to chase down the short. If the unit is still running with the low voltage wires disconnected then it is probably the relay on the board, which means you will need a new board unless you’re expereinced at soldering and want give it a try replacing just the relay. Which you’ll probably need a new board by the time you’re done anyhow. LOL

.Good Luck

Bissell 37604 Bagless Upright Vacuum. Hose keeps clogging every time I vacuum. Is there a way to prevent this?
I am ready to buy a new vacuum, but it does do a great job picking up hair…until it clogs. It clogs at top of hose. Could the hose be kinked? It does not look like it.
ANSWER : That is a defect in the design of that style of vacuum. I went back to my old vac because I got so tired of having to unstop it. The sharp turns in the hose and the molded plastic causes it. Find one without the turns.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

Kenmore Progressive canister model 116.27514700
Problem: Vacuum motor won’t turn on. The power head operates, but nothing from the vacuum. Have checked all areas of airflow: hose, bag, motor filter and hepa filter. All are fine. Have checked and rechecked all electrical connections, all seem to be in working order. Vacuum hasn’t run for a week or so, so it’s not the thermal protector, unless it’s defective. Vacuum was running fine last week. Didn’t stop operating when using. Went to v
ANSWER : Hello! The culprit is the PCB Assembly;
Part # KC86WBZR3000…Cost is $6.99. I would remove and inspect for burnt components, or broken wires…Then clean connections both male/female using an eraser, toothbrush and alcohol…Using a bright light and a magnifying glass inspect solder joints for “bridges” or cold joints. If you detect a problem during this procedure (to the exclusion of burnt components) fix, reassemble, and test. If problem still persist: Order a new part.
