How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

You`ll find the model number on a metallic silver-colored rating plate, which is usually located on the back or bottom of your vacuum.
If the cord itself is frayed or has exposed wiring, you`ll need to replace the entire electrical cord. Replacing only the plug could leave you open to electrical shock.
Electrolux vacuum cleaners are known for their superior quality, suction power, and durability. Some customers noted that their old Electrolux vacuums lasted them over 30 years— that`s no small feat!
The manufacture date is represented by the numerical digit in the 3rd position of the serial number. Please note! In some cases the year digit in the example above covers decades. So it could be for 2014-2004-1994.
They use a spring mechanism to provide the retraction force. As the cord is uncoiled and pulled out for use, tension builds up on the steel torsion spring. Once the electrical power is no longer needed, the stored energy in the torsion spring is released, retracting the cord back to the reel.
They work on a pair of rotatable wheels inside a storage space that houses the entire length of the cord. When a user pulls the cord, extending it, the ratchets lock automatically, preventing the cord from rolling back up into its original storage position.
An adapter cable is a mechanical accessory and is also called a connector. A connector connects two connectors. An adapter cable is in short a connector that converts different voltages to the right one voltages. The junction converts signals into other voltages.
The simple explanation is that it is a standard cord (sometimes referred to as a polarized plug) that includes a third grounding wire. The grounding prong is an added safety feature that protects you in the case of a malfunction within the appliance being used.
Using a heat gun, some soldering wire, and a cutting tool, you can fix the faulty or broken wires, and restore your laptop`s charger to working condition.
The model number as well as the serial number to your WORKSHOP Wet/Dry Vac can be found on the serial label. This label is placed in a different location depending on the model, however most will be found on the power head. To the left there is a close-up example of a serial label.
The details about your model and serial number can be found on a sticker on the underside of the vacuum. The serial number is printed on the label on the right side of the unit. The serial number is located on the outer right side of the unit.
RIDGID is printed on the front of the vacuum. The model number can be found on a silver product identification label on the back of the vacuum`s powerhead assembly.
Aerus is the successor to Electrolux USA, the iconic manufacturer of vacuum cleaners.
Founded in Sweden in 1919 by entrepreneur Axel Wenner-Gren, Electrolux has shaped living for the better for 100 years by reinventing what great taste, care and wellbeing experiences for our consumers.
Model Five, the V, which was launched in 1921, was the first vacuum cleaner produced in Electrolux`s own name. It was also the first adapted for a normal home.
Beginning in 1910, Electrolux has been manufacturing quality vacuum cleaners. From the earliest model, the Model I, to the latest Ultra Collection series, each of these machines is extremely durable and very powerful. Until recently, locating replacement parts for these models was a difficult task.
A simpler, and cheaper fix, is to wrap your frayed cord in electrical tape. Wrap the frayed area first, then wrap outward along the cord a few times to prevent further damage.
An extension cord essentially is a bundle of insulated electrical wires with a plug on each end. Electrical current flowing through wires generates heat, and when too much current flows through a wire, it can overheat and melt the plastic insulation of the wires, causing short circuits and fires.
The better the filtration, the fewer allergens escape back into your home. Bagged vacuums often have HEPA-rated bags, replaceable exhaust filters or both. Bagless canisters usually have permanent, washable filters, some with HEPA ratings.
So how does it work? , these bags have a valve that allows air to exit but not enter. They are designed to release air, not seal it. As you squeeze the air out of these containers, you compress everything that`s inside them. The vacuum bag is the perfect choice for storing moisture-sensitive items.
The brush roll or its bearings may be clogged with hair, threads or dirt. Make sure they are clean and the roll spins. The belt may also have slipped because it was loose. Check the fit of the new belt when it is installed.
There are two types of adapters: object adapters and class adapters. The object adapter uses composition to wrap the adaptee with the adapter, effectively producing the interface that the client expects.
The big difference between an adapter and a converter is electricity. While the purpose of an adapter is to simply help the plugs on your electronics fit into (or more aptly, adapt to the shape of) foreign outlets, a converter`s job is to change the voltage found in an outlet to match that of your devices.
If only the plug prongs are bent or snapped, start by replacing the plug. If the cord itself is frayed or has exposed wiring, you`ll need to replace the entire electrical cord. Replacing only the plug could leave you open to electrical shock.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums

Vacuum not running; do I have to replace the cord winder or just cord?
ANSWER : Typically, the cord and winder are supplied as a unit.  It is possible to fit new cord to an existing winder, but the amount of labour involved will make the job more expensive than simply exchanging the complete unit.  Even if you’re going to do the job yourself, it’s simply not worth planning to just fit new cable (unless you are a masochist with unlimited time and patience).  Pay that bit extra for a complete unit – you’ll be glad you did (or you’ll be sorry if you don’t!).

My older Dyson DC14 (the purple one) early model with a clutch on the beater bar belt needs a clutch replacement. The bar has been cleaned and there are no worn or damaged parts so I conclude that the clutch at the motor end of the belt needs to be replaced. I can find the part online but no instructions on how to disassemble the vacuum to get to and replace it. Dysons only advice is to give me the address and phone of the nearest service center. Can you help me?
ANSWER : Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com which has some very useful info on dismantling and repairing Dysons.
.
.Although this site doesnt actually cover the DC14 yet, the DC14 is very similar to the DC07 so as regards dissassembling the machine, and replacing the clutch, my experience is that the DC07 info will enable you to do the job.

Kirby Vacuum Hi Bruce, In my opinion, yes the Kirby would be worth it, as long as you are not replacing the motor. The switch would be the most expensive part besides the motor that would need to be replaced. The switch costs USD 49.99, the cord is roughly $39.99, and the carbon brushes are $29.99. I can easily walk you through any of these repairs should you need help. Kirby’s are great vacuum cleaners, that usually last 30+ years. Brand new these machines sell in the US for $1600 or more,

I had the vacuum cleaner question about the canister and the wand/powerhead… the Kenmore Progressive Vacuum canister model 116.25812 and the canister not powering off without unplugging the vacuum. The solution I received that they both run on their own switch so it is normal makes sense. However, is there a power switch on the canister anywhere? The only way for the canister to be turned off is by unplugging it. Any ideas? One would think there would be a switch. I am new to fixya and hope
ANSWER : Hi. On some models, one switch controls all of the power. Your issue, which is no working switch is almost certainly a blown triac on the circuit board in the canister – kenmore part number KC86WBZRZ000

Looks like a common fault with this particular model judging by the number of complaints on the web.
.
.Take it to your local vacuum repair shop and they should be able to fix it for a nominal fee.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.
