How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

You may be hearing excessive noise because your filters are dirty. To clean them, watch our Cleaning Filters video. A damaged Brush Roll could also be the problem.
What should I do? If your vacuum cleaner whistles, this is usually a sign that your device can`t suck in sufficient air. Often, it`s the dust container or bag that`s full. Check these first and exchange them if necessary.
If your machine is making an abnormally loud noise it is likely due to the belt slipping or the brush roll being incorrectly installed, follow these steps to resolve: Turn off and unplug machine. Use a Phllips-head screwdriver to remove 3 screws, 2 in the belt cover and 1 on the brush roll mount. Remove belt cover.
Older vacuums may develop cracks in their plastic frame. If one of these cracks compromises the suction in a Shark vacuum, it will start making that high-pitched squeal as a result — even with the hose off. These cracks can be difficult to spot, but look for lines, gaps, or compromised areas with a careful inspection.
Overall, Bissell is a popular vacuum brand for a reason – these vacuums are dependable and last up to two years without issue. However, some models are better than others when it comes to cleaning different surfaces.
Overheating usually occurs because the dust bag has not been emptied, filter has not been cleaned or there is a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bent hand piece. If your vacuum shuts down unexpectedly, make sure you turn the vacuum off and unplug it from the wall socket.
This means it is best to choose a vacuum cleaner with a noise output that is less than 70 dB. However, the noise levels of vacuum cleaners fall between 75dB to 85dB. Thus, continuous exposure to such noise levels affect a user`s health while also being a sign and source of inefficiencies in the equipment.
If you listen very carefully, sometimes you can hear a “hiss” sound that is the signal of a vacuum leak. However, the most common way to notice this is when the engine loses fuel efficiency. The reason for this is due to the fact that vehicle exhaust is delayed on exiting the combustion chamber.
Sound enclosures, noise reduction blankets, sound curtain noise barriers, or sound barrier walls are a few options to consider when reviewing noise reduction materials. If the vacuum pump is indoors, a noise enclosure would be the recommended solution.
Noisy Motor

The motor may be dirty and needs cleaning. Your belt drive may be faulty. The fan may be loose or damaged. Parts in the motor may be wearing out.

You can eliminate whistling of the sump pump hose when using it for dust collection by distorting the hose with a heat gun. Keep distorting different spots on the hose until the whistling goes away.
Belt is Broken or has Debris

The main reason why a vacuum may be emitting a smell of burning rubber is a broken belt or an object is suck. Excess hair or fur caught around the roller brush can also cause this issue. Turn off your vacuum and let it cool before doing anything.

A vacuum cleaner can run continuously for 30 – 60 min each time. The vacuum cleaner has no suction power. For example, a hair cannot be sucked up.
Vacuuming carpets every day is OK. Some households might not need to vacuum as frequently. Still, it depends on the living arrangements, the carpet`s traffic daily, and the possibility of pets and kids treading the carpets. With the appropriate vacuum, you won`t damage your rugs.
Generally overheating is caused by overworking the pump. If your vacuum pump isn`t working as it should, you`re having to run it for longer, or at higher speeds, making the pump overheat and potentially seize.
If you`re smelling rubber, the belt has either burned out and snapped or the belt has become so stretched out that the roller is not moving and the vacuum belt is getting super heated from the motors RPM.
Locate the brush reset button on the lower back right of the vacuum. Press the button to reset the brushroll To ensure the brush has been reset, plug the vacuum back into the electrical outlet.
A high pitch whistle could indicate a seal is damaged or the machine is blocked. If the noise occurs without the Wand and Cleaner head, it is likely to be caused by either the bin or cyclone.

Worn out bearings on the brush roll will make a vacuum much noisier. This is a good time to check them after cleaning and inspecting the brush roll. Try spinning each bearing by hand. Some brush rolls have only one bearing on the roll, and the other bearing is in the head where the roll is mounted.

My vacuum sounds like it is screaming the entire time it is on. We have cleaned out every possible area, but it is still extremely load. Any suggestions?
ANSWER : Is it cleaning as good as it used to? 1) If not there may be an air leak.
A crack or a hole will allow air to rush in. The motor will make a louder noise when not under load. 2) Have you changed house locations, ie Country? Diffferent house voltage will cause this screaming.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

High pitch My Hoover fusion vacuum cleaner began making a high pitch sound that makes it very annoying to vacuum. I cleaned all the things I could clean. I even cut out all the hair that was entangled in the brushes. Any idea what is causing the sound. It sounds like an siren is going off.
ANSWER : The Hoover Fusion has design flaws in the motor, including a metal plate that is too thin to contain the forces acting on the motor, particularly the constant strong tension from the drive belt, and a plastic plate that is attached to the metal plate by two screws that gradually loosen over time. Assuming the filters and canister are clean, a high-pitched noise coming from the motor indicates it is about to fail as a result of these problems. You can replace the motor after it fails, but the problem will eventually occur again. For those very mechanically inclined, when the motor first starts making the high-pitched noise, you can dismantle it and tighten all screws.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Vaccum overheating I have a hoover u5458-900 wind tunnel and the auto shot off has kicked in for overheat protection. i’ve cleaned the entire thing and let it sit like i was supposed to but it still won’t fully turn on and stay on. it will turn on for a few minutes and then shut off and just cycle like that for a few times. is there anything i can do to fix this or should i just clean it more (if possible)?
ANSWER : Either the motor protector is bad, or you have a clog in the hose or the dirt inlet by the brush roll. Are the filters clean? It is also possible that there is a problem with the motor.

Floormate noise Floorscrubber is only 6 mo old. It is making a grinding noise. Sounds like popcorn at times. I don’t know why? It still cleans but the noise sounds like it is going to stop at any time.
ANSWER : The motor sounds bad. Use the Hoover web site to locate a shop near you for warranty repair. hoover.com

Vacuum smells I have a 6 year old rainbow vacuum model E and it smells terrible everytime I use it. Probably because often times i don’t remove the water basin after vacuuming and just let it sit. It’s my own fault however now I don’t know what to do to get rid of this terrible smell. I’ve water cleaned the hepa filter, not able to remove the separator screw to clean. Can you give me some suggestions?
ANSWER : In addition to vinegar, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is also an excellent remedy for many odour problems.

Try generously sprinkling baking soda on a rug you wish to clean, and afterwards, vacuum up the spot.

Rugs, and dirt may be broomed beforehand, and you may want to spread the soda over a large enough area to avoid having a small “clean spot”.

Repeat as necessary, and buy the bigger boxes of baking/washing soda. It has many more great uses that you can discover.

I have no power on a brand new Electrolux Oxygen canister vacuum. This is the second time. After the first time, I took it back to Sears where I bought the vacuum and they gave me a brand new vacuum. This is the second time it’s happened, basically on both units after the time that i brought them home.
ANSWER : Ensure that the tools and the bucket are installed properly, if the bucket is not well in place, the unit wont start.

If the electric power does not come on, disconnect from mains
and check plugs, cable and fuses where appropriate.

If you use always the same socket there may be a problem withthe AC socket, and this may be bloewing the fuse.
