Vacuum packaging refers to the technique of removing air from a pack prior to sealing and it predates the use of gases as a means of food preservation. Its principal purpose is to remove oxygen by pulling the packaging material into intimate contact with the product.
Chamber Vacuuming– A popular form of vacuum packaging to package various products, especially liquids. A flexible package is placed in a chamber that uses negative air pressure to remove air from the container. Vacuum Bag – A bag with three enclosed sides used to contain products to remove some or all oxygen.
Vacuum packaging can preserve food products for up to 3-5 times longer than conventional storage method. It reduces the growth of aerobic bacteria, mold and fungus as the absence of oxygen inhibits their growth cycle and proliferation.
Vacuum packaging is commonly used to store dry foods over a long period, such as cereals, nuts, cured meats, cheese, smoked fish, coffee, and potato chips (crisps).
A skin packaged item has a thin surlyn film shrunk around the product and is vacuum-sealed to the backing board. A blister pack features a hard plastic “blister” containing the product but is not vacuum sealed to the backing board.
Status food vacuum bags are made of polyamide and polyethylene. Polyamide (PA) ensures oxygen impermeability. It is important to note that Status vacuum bags have the thickest layer (30 µm) of PA on the market. Polyethylene (PE) ensures quality sealing.
A vacuum sealer removes the air from a bag or container and seals it closed. This is done using a combination of suction and heat. The suction removes the air from the bag, and the heat is used to seal the bag closed.
Extruded vacuum sealing bags are made from film, manufactured by large extruders. Pellets of plastic are melted in this extruder and then blown up in to a bubble. The film will be cooled down and then cut into rolls of film. Normally, 20% of the pellets are barrier material, making these bags into vacuum sealing bags.
A vacuum can be created by removing air from a space using a vacuum pump or by reducing the pressure using a fast flow of fluid, as in Bernoulli`s principle.
Eco-friendly packaging FAQ
These alternatives include renewable packaging, compostable poly mailers (bioplastics), recycled kraft shopping bags or filler, biodegradable packing tape and stickers, recycled corrugated cardboard boxes, and other packaging materials that contribute less waste.
Vacuum packaging is a method of removing oxygen from packaged food. Another name for it is reduced oxygen packaging (or ROP). Using a vacuum suction, the air is removed from the bag, thus removing oxygen, and the package is then sealed off so air cannot get into the package.
Empty the vacuum cleaner, discard the contents in the outside trash and use an anti-bacterial wipe to clean the vacuum. Let it dry thoroughly. If your manufacturer says your vacuum cannister is washable, wash it out with warm, soapy water and then rinse it and let it dry.
The chambers have one or more sides open ends of the bag, or bags can be placed. Once the lid is closed and the machine starts, a vacuum will form within the chamber to remove air from the bag. After the bag is placed into the sealer, air can be removed.
Examples of a Vacuum
The inside of an incandescent lightbulb is a vacuum. Space is a near-perfect vacuum. The thin atmospheres of the Moon, Mercury, and Mars are a vacuum (at least compared to Earth). Suction from a vacuum cleaner forms a vacuum.
In practice, industrial vacuums are produced using different kinds of vacuum pumps. Vacuum pumps can be based on a number of different principles: Compression-expansion of the gas (piston pumps, rotary pumps, Root`s (dry) pumps) Drag by viscosity effects (vapor ejector pumps)
Vacuum-formed plastics are plastic materials that went through a process called Vacuum Forming. Vacuum Forming is a simple and rational type of thermoforming. It is a process where a sheet of plastic is heated to a forming temperature, stretched onto a single-surface mold, and pressed against the mold by a vacuum.
Sustainable packaging is important because it diminishes the ecological footprint in all the product`s life-cycle steps. It supports both producers and consumers to reduce their environmental impact.
Sustainable packaging is packaging that is effective, efficient, safe, and circular. Sustainable packaging design considers the full life cycle of the product – your packaging design must balance the needs of your product, requirements of your customers, and environmental impact, as well as your business goals.
Don`t be tempted to reuse vacuum cleaner bags. Your motives may be pure, but your air won`t be, and your vacuum cleaner may bite the dust (pun intended) years before its time.
Freezing vacuum-sealed food is a great way to save time and money. If put to good use a vacuum food sealer can be a highly beneficial kitchen tool to have. Using a vacuum sealer can generally extend your food`s shelf life by 3-5 times.
