How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

If the vacuum cleaner stops suddenly, the filters should be checked to make sure that they are not blocked or that they require changing. This applies to both bagged and bagless models. Also check if the nozzle or hose are blocked.
To do this, remove the base of the unit with a twist or by unlatching, then dump the debris and put a plastic bag over the bottom and shake the center-weighted cloth filter. On top emptying models simply open the top and remove the bag.

Possible Failures and Troubleshooting

Other reasons can be a faulty timer or start switch, a defective motor, or a problem with the main control board which may have shorted. If your Electrolux washing machine is not spinning this could be related to a kinked or damaged drain hose or the drain hose connection.

Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.

1 ) how do you open the body of the vacum ? 2) How to replace the power cord? Epic 6500 sr
ANSWER : Very Carefully! LOL! Disconnect the hose from the door. Open the door. Remove the bag. Flip the vacuum on its top. You will then need to remove the trim pieces from the sides by sliding them toward the front of the machine(bag opening). Usually they won’t want to go easily. The way I used to do it was by wedging a screw driver between the rear cover and the trim piece then gently tapped the side of the screw driver blade toward the front. Once you get enough hanging over you can grab and pull them the rest of the way. The vacuum should separate once the trim has been removed. ****I have to warn you. If you have never done this before it is extremely important to take note of how and where everything goes on an Electrolux. They are complex machines that are assembled in a fairly meticulous way.**** The best way for someone that has not had any training to replace the cord is by replacing the cord winder assembly that comes with a new cord. Otherwise you have to disassemble the cord winder. Not fun.

The motor on my Epic 6500 works, the hose is sucking, but the power head isn;t working… I tried the sidestep power head and that one works. Ive opened and replaced the belt and that is fine. The bulb was already burned out and wasn’t replaced so I cant tell if theres power to the head. What else could it be?
ANSWER : Connect the power nozzle directly to the hose and try.
.Check the terminals where the wand connects to the PN. If any are discolored or cracked, that may be the problem.
.Open the PN and check for loose or broken wires and connections. Repair or replace as necessary.
.The reset switch could be broken or worn out. You can check this with a continuity tester or multimeter.
.If none of these solve the problem the vacuum needs to be taken to your local Aerus Electrolux store for diagnosis and repair.

I have my vacume electrical cord tangled inside and disconnected (I can see the open end of the connection from the power cord collector wheel! I need to take the vacume apart so get access to the wire inside. I need to know if there is something else to open other than the 4 screws. Your help is highly appreciated in advance.
ANSWER : Since you did not provide a model number for your vacuum, it is difficult to provide any precise directions regarding disassembly.
.
.However, most vacuum cleaners are fairly straightforward machines, and as long as you unplug the unit before you attempt any maintenance, then you should not have any trouble with the repair.
.
.Just be sure to keep track of all the screws you remove, and if different sizes are used in different parts of the vacuum, keep them separated and labelled so you can reinstall them in the correct places later.
.
.If the unit has a cover over the collection bag compartment, be sure to remove the cover and the bag to check for additional screws in that compartment.
.
.Other than that, just remove the visible screws holding the cover in place and then carefully remove the cover. If you need to reconnect the power supply wires from the cord to the vacuum, you may need to use a soldering iron, depending on how they are connected.
