How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Verify there is no debris build-up on the charging contacts. If found, clean the charging contacts on both the Roomba® and the Home Base® with lightly dampened melamine foam. Examine Home Base®/Clean Base® line cord and check for any damage such as cuts, or fraying. Ensure the plug is securely inserted into the outlet.
If your Braava jet® m Series Robot Mop will not charge, it`s very likely the power cord is not fully inserted into the Home Base®. First, confirm that the outlet is working, by plugging in another device such as a lamp and confirm it works. If it does not work, move the Home Base® to a known working outlet.
You may want to reset your robots charging system by removing the battery and then pressing the power button for at least 15 seconds. Then reinserting the battery and charging it for 72 hours. This refresh charge may help your robot.
One of the most common reasons the battery light comes on and the car battery stops charging is because of corrosion. Whether the corrosion is on the battery cables or cable terminals, it is still a problem that needs to be addressed. Another common culprit for the battery not charging is a problem with the alternator.
Troubleshoot your cable, charger, outlet & case

Check that your charger and cable work. Try them with another device. Check that the cable is securely connected to the charger and to your phone. Check that there`s nothing in the port of your phone, like dust or lint.

A1: Confirm you properly installed the included battery pack and battery door. A2: Confirm the Charging Stand is properly connected to a powered USB port. A3: Confirm you pushed down when placing the controller on the Charging Stand.
Roomba® should charge in the following manner: If you are using a charger, the charger should have a solid green power indicator when it is plugged into an outlet. If you are using a Home Base®, the power indicator should blink approximately once every four (4) seconds when plugged into the charger or outlet.
For the Roomba`s nickel-based (not lithium ion like smartphones) batteries, it`s best to keep the unit charging whenever you`re not using it. However, don`t leave it in its dock for days at a time — lots of vacuuming will keep its battery healthy.
You can easily check the status of the battery in the iRobot® HOME App. A battery icon will be displayed in the top-right corner, indicating the current status of the battery.
Charging time under normal conditions is at least 2 hours. For best results, use only the battery type compatible with your robot and ensure that it is an authentic iRobot Lithium Ion/NiMH battery that comes with Roomba or purchased from iRobot authorized dealers.
AC Adapter Specifications: Input: worldwide 100-240V 50/60HZ Output: 22.5V 1.25A 9.8Ft Power Cord enough to use and longer than original.
Most robot vacuum cleaners find their charging station with infrared light, but some use stored virtual maps of your floorplan. Ensure your charging station is in good condition and has enough clearance space so your robot vacuum docks appropriately.
Turn the ignition off on both cars. Connect the positive cable to positive terminals on both batteries. Connect the negative cable to the negative node of the functioning battery. Connect the other end of the negative cable to the ground on the dead battery.
Perform a power reset (or hard reset) to clear information from the computer`s memory without erasing personal data.
Using recovery mode

This method works on Android devices only, for this, you need your Android phone to be turned off. Simply plug in your USB cable and keep holding down the volume down/volume up button to enter the recovery mode. Here when the menus appear, simply tap exit, and reboot the device.

If the charging dock light turns off, it indicates that Roomba is docked and charging rightly. The turning off the dock light will not stay longer. So, there is nothing to worry about it. If you feel or think that something is unusual, you can check the charging status of Roomba through the I-robot app.
Reason #1:The Roomba Battery Is Fully Charged

The most common reason for the Roomba`s charging dock light turning off is that the battery has reached full charge. If the Roomba`s battery is fully charged, the charging dock`s light will turn off automatically.

Most owners believe that running their robot vacuums four times per week is sufficient to keep the floors dust-free. However, if you have children or pets, you should use your robot vacuum more frequently. Daily vacuuming is recommended if you suffer from seasonal allergies.
If its battery gets low before finishing a cleaning cycle, Roomba® automatically returns to the Home Base®/Clean Base™ to recharge, providing that it was started from its Home Base®/Clean Base™.

On average, a well-maintained robotic vacuum cleaner can last up to 4-6 years, but some models may last even longer.

I purchased a brand new Eureka Pet vacuum, sorry don’t know exact name but it the one that has the self cleaning duster on it. Last night I used the vacuum on my carpet, it was working fine until I accidently sucked up the corner of a scarf that was hanging off a couch. I shut the vacuum off, pulled out the scarf and and resumed vacuuming. Much to my dismay the suction on the vacuum had ceased. Can you tell me if there is a reset button on the vacuum? The vacuum does not appear to be damage
ANSWER : If the motor is running, there should be suction. Possible problems depend on whether it’s a canister or upright and are:
.A clog in the hose, UR or canister. Detach hose. Drop small coin in one end and lift hose causing it to roll out the other. If it does, no clog in hose. Drop same coin into hose opening on power head. If it rolls out, no clog in PN.
.Broken fan blades, UR. Needs to be taken to shop for repair/replacement.
.
.A reset button is for use if the motor isn’t running, so won’t have anything to do with the suction.

Dirt devil vacuum cleaner–trouble vacuuming dirt and pet hair on carpeting –is the problem with the spinning brush which contacts the floor,  not contacting the carpeting??  I thought (when I bought this vacuum) that the aforementioned brush was adjustable to various heights of carpeting.  Sometimes, it seems like nothing is being vacuumed up –unless I have just put a new bag on the vacuum… Do I need or can I replace the spinning brush on the bottom of the vacuum so it kicks up and vacuums
ANSWER : Try replacing the belt. Rubber belts stretch out after about a year.

I purchased a brand new P113 Ryobi charger about 2 years ago. It has never worked. If I put a P104 battery in for a charge, it looks like it works correctly. I push the battery tester on the battery itself, and it says full charge, but when I go to use the bateery, it dies right away. I have tried three new P104 batteries. The batteries charge on my charger at work with no problem. The funny thing is, I don't need a battery in the charger and the charger does the same thing, It runs the test
ANSWER : If you have your receipt, check with Ryobi to see if it is still under warranty. It comes with either a 2 or 3 year warranty, depending on when it was purchased. If it is still covered, get it replaced/repaired. If it is not, buy the P117 charger. $30 at Home Depot. It has a 90 day satisfaction guarantee. If it charges your batteries properly, you’re good. If not, bring it back if you don’t like/want it. My P113 won’t get out of test mode now, or charge Lithium batteries anymore. So I bought the P117 yesterday. Works great, and it’s a lot cheaper than new batteries! And it has a 3 year warranty.

The original belt on my upright Kenmore Progressive broke and I replaced it with the spare that was in the vacuum. The vacuum and spare belt are about 10 years old. Then the spare broke after one vacuuming session and there was a burning smell coming from the vacuum. I ordered new belts and replaced it with the new belt. It seems to be working fine with no smell. I checked the belt after I vacuumed the family room and although it was in tact, the belt was very hot. Is that normal? Should t
ANSWER : The belt heats up due to the friction, as well as being in contact with the shaft of a hot motor. It is normal.

Suction Problem I was vacuuming and stopped to empty the cannister. When I started vacuuming again – the suction wasn’t working properly. The vacuum was just pushing stuff around the floor. I cleaned the hair out the brush on the bottom and it still isn’t working. It was working fine before I emptied the tube 🙁 I can’t figure out what happened.Help!
ANSWER : Greetings from GoVacuum,
.
.I believe what may have happened is that your vacuum cleaner belt has either broken, or been stretched so far that ithe brushes are no longer spinning fast enough.
.
.Here’s what you should do to diagnose this problem.
.
.1. Take the suction hose out of the back of the vacuum (assuming that your vacuum has on-board tools), and see if you have any suction coming from the hose. If you do, this indicates your belt is bad.
.
.2. If you don’t have suction coming from the hose, then it may be something as simple as replacing the filters, to a clog in the vacuum, or to your motor going bad.
.
.In my professional opinion though I would say from what you stated that the belt is mostly likely going to be your issue. If you can provide me the model number of your vacuum cleaner, I can walk you through step by step on ow to replace the belt.
.
.I have posted a short YouTube video on a vacuum belt change, this is not for all vacuums, but it will give you some idea of how to change a belt;

I have a Dyson DC35. It has just stopped working. The green light on the charger is on and the vacuum is plugged into the charger, but it is like the vacuum is completely dead.
ANSWER : Aside from mechanical issues or broken wiring, ALL rechargeable batteries have a finite life; measured in the number of times they are charged, the temperatures they are exposed to, the charging currents / voltages they are exposed to, and so on. ALSO, unless the charging instructions specifically state that the charger can remain plugged in all the time, the charger should be unplugged when a full charge is indicated. Some charging circuits do not protect the battery from over-charging damage. AND, some batteries — Lithium for example — should NEVER EVER be fully discharged as this _will_ permanently damage them.
