How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

A few things you can check to try and solve:

Turn off the vacuum cleaner – then check if the nozzle, tube, hose or filters are blocked and/or dirty. Let the product cool down for a minimum of 2 hours on the charging stand before starting it again (stick vacuum cleaners only)

Check that the vacuum cleaner is plugged into a working power outlet and that fuses and breakers don`t need resetting. An activated thermal cut-out due to a blockage is the next most likely cause of the problem. Check for blockages in the hose and filters, and remove any obstructions that you find.
If the vacuum cleaner stops suddenly, the filters should be checked to make sure that they are not blocked or that they require changing. This applies to both bagged and bagless models. Also check if the nozzle or hose are blocked.
Electrolux Stick Vacuums

The filter assembly is not washable and should be placed every six months. As with the canisters and uprights, an excessively dirty filter leads to motor noise, loss of suction, and overheating.

the vacuum system may be dirty, the pumping line may be restricted or too small in diameter, the pump may be dirty or with too little capacity, the pumping speed may be restricted due to other causes.
The most common problem with a vacuum cleaner is also the easiest to remedy: clogs in the hose or attachments. Also the electrical cord, motor, switch, fan, brushes, and motor bearings can all need repair or replacement. The drive belt may need replacing; and the attachments, hoses, and filters may need unclogging.
If all you hear from the vacuum unit is a click at the when you try to start the vacuum motor from inside the house, then the motor in the unit is dead and has to be replaced. A strong odor from the shellac, which coats the copper coil windings, is an indicator that the motor is about to or has burnt out.
Pause the programme and make sure the garments are spaced evenly in the tub. Very small loads can cause balance problems with the spin phase leading to a lack of spinning. Pause the programme and open the door. Manually redistribute the load so that the items are spaced evenly around the tub and add some laundry.
The device is not correctly positioned in the charging station. The charging plug is not connected. Incorrect suction cup connected or no suction cup connected (some models) To protect the battery and electronics, the charging function is deactivated if the ambient temperature is below 5 ° C or above 35 ° C.
If the vacuum system runs hotter than 200˚F, it is usually caused by high ambient air temperature, lack of airflow across the heat exchanger (air-cooled units only), lack of water flow across the heat exchanger (water-cooled units only) or lack of oil flow.
Remove the filter and empty out any loose contents/rubbish. Rinse under warmer water for 1 minute (max 400C). Leave out to dry, making sure it is completely dry before refitting to your vacuum.
If there is something that has become caught in the hose in another part of the system, the airflow will be reduced and can cause overheating and a shut down. Clear out hoses, attachments, and brushes of any hair, dirt, and debris. This will allow for restored airflow and should get things going again.
Electrolux and Frigidaire – push the reset button on the water dispenser and hold until you see the green light flash (this can take up to 15 seconds). GE and Hotpoint – press the Reset Water Filter button on the dispenser and hold for 3 seconds.
Although you should leave some vacuum pump repair to an expert, there are things you can do to diagnose and fix faults in the equipment. A vacuum pump repair facility may offer services to train you internal maintenance men to do various levels of pump repairs.
Look at the factory specifications for your pump and ensure that it is receiving the correct electrical power supply in order to work properly. Ensure that all electrical wiring is in good condition, that there are no loose connections and that the electrical current is reaching your pump in the first place.
As a general rule, if the repair is going to cost less than half the cost of a new vacuum cleaner, it`s best to go ahead and get it repaired. When the service tops half the price of a new machine, it`s probably best to invest in a newer model.
The average life expectancy of a mid-range vacuum cleaner is about six years. You can fix or replace things like blocked filters, jammed brush rolls, frayed hoses, worn-out stick vac batteries and broken accessories yourself.
Start the engine and spray

Scope out all the vacuum lines under the hood. Then start the engine and spray each connection with a light stream of water. If a connection sucks in the water, you`ve found your leak. A vacuum leak can cause a rough idle, high rpm, poor gas mileage and even trigger a check-engine light.

Here are a few common reasons a washer won`t spin: The washing machine is too full. The load is improperly balanced. The washer itself isn`t balanced correctly.
Power issues, overloading, or restricted airflow are all possibilities for an Electrolux dryer not drying clothes. Fortunately, most can be resolved with some simple maintenance or changes to your dryer use and care.
A few common causes of your washer not spinning include: The laundry in the drum is unbalanced, or there`s too much of it. You could be having power issues with your washing machine, or the circuit breaker itself. You might be using the wrong type of laundry detergent.
Most cases of a jammed or stuck brush bar are quick and easy to fix, simply pulling the debris gently from the brush bar. Alternatively, if you need to clear a problematic blockage, you can take the brush bar out of the housing easily, for quick maintenance.
The BMS doesn`t only consist of the actual battery but also the circuitry and other components; together, they ensure the right range of voltage and current reaches the battery for a duration of time. So, in that respect, you can`t overcharge your handphone or vacuum cleaner.
A damaged vacuum hose, clogged motor air filter or bad suction motor can cause the vacuum cleaner to shut off during use. A tripped overload on the vacuum suction motor can shut off the vacuum cleaner during use. If your vacuum has a reset button, push it; if the vacuum seems hot, let it cool off first.

My Kirby G3 diamond series won’t turn on
ANSWER : Hi There, The most common problem by far is that the cord is faulty. This is a pretty easy repair to do at home. If your machine was randomly cutting out before it stopped altogether then the cord is likely the culprit. If however it stopped all of a sudden with no warning then it is possibly a switch or motor issue which is a much harder repair to achieve for a novice.
The kirby cords are not terribly expensive (and I have linked a how to video showing how its done) so if you need a new one I would say DIY is the go, otherwise spend the $25 get a pro to take a look.

I was replacing the belt on my Eureka Smartvac 4870 and one of the felt gaskets (or part of it) popped out. I thought I put it in correctly, but the first I used it after replacing the belt, the gasket got mangled by the brush. I’m wondering how important it is to get fixed; is it a part I can pick up anywhere and fix myself? Thanks for the help.
ANSWER : I’m no expert but if you mean the felt on the roller, you have to replace the roller (expensive, esp. for such a minor part). So. I found some felt with adhesive in the craft section at Wal-Mart, trimmed it to fit and done deal. Felt reduces friction.

ANSWER : The switch is definitely a possibility, but other problems can also cause this.
.Bad switch, needs replaced.
.Broken wiring in power nozzle, wands, hose, or canister.
.Bad PN motor.

My Hoover vacuum is not vacuuming the carpets or floors. When I release the tube to use the smaller end the suction works perfect. So i believe the problem is in the rods on the floor or in the part that vacuums the floor! Can you tell me how to fix it , or where can I take it to get it fixed?

thanks

ANSWER : Ive just had the exact same problem. In the very back lower portion of the vacuum You will need to take it apart. I guarantee there is a clog. You might also check your belts to make sure they are still on track.
