How to Identify and Fix Common Vacuum Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced Vacuum Technicians :

Most robotic vacuum cleaners use one or two spinning brushes along with a rolling brush. These brushes collect dirt towards the center of the room, where the electric motor creates suction. Dust, hair, and everything else collected by the vacuum cleaner is sucked and stored into a removable dust container.
The first consideration when picking a vacuum is the type of flooring in your home. If you have a lot of carpeting, you`ll need an upright or canister vacuum for deep cleaning. If you have mostly hard-surface flooring, you might be able to use a stick or robotic vacuum for light cleaning jobs.
To release the wand on the Hoover® REACT™ Powered Reach™ Plus press the Powered Reach™ Mode button on the top of the canister. This will allow you to remove the canister and access the wand release. The wand release button is located on the spine of the vacuum directly behind the dirt cup.
Push harder than you pull.

Many people naturally exert more force when they`re pulling their vacuums back than when they`re pushing them forward, but this can leave dirt on the floor. Vacuums are designed to be pushed forward at a rate of about 12 inches per second and pulled back at a rate of 6 inches per second.

Central vacuum wands are the extension pieces either metal or made of ABS plastics that connect the handle of your central vacuum hose to your cleaning attachments. On this page, you can choose wands to fit your central vacuum hose.

Placing the handle of my Dyson DC07 into its upright and locked position causes the beater bar to stop turning. It will not start turning until the handle is first lowered to the working position and the Carpet/Bare knob is moved to the Bare Floor position and then back to the Carpet position. Then the beater bar turns until the handle is placed into the upright position. What might be the problem?
ANSWER : Hi its Darran at Dyson.

The brush control is designed to switch the brush bar off automatically when you stand the machine back into the upright position. It is designed this way to protect any delicate floor surfaces when you have the machine switched on and upright and when you are using the hose.

If the brush control should be in the centre position and move forward to the “on” position when you release the head. If it is not doing this, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards

My Oreck Upright will not stay upright! The handle falls over everytime I leave it stand on its own.
ANSWER : What you are in need of is what they call a detent. There is a possibility that is has broken off from the housing which means that the only way to repair it properly is to replace the entire housing. It may have just had the screw come loose and has fallen off and just needs to be re-attached and possibly needs a larger screw if the hole is stripped. You will need to take the bottom plate off and remove the screws holding the motor and the right angled air tube and then remove both of those so that you can see where the detent is supposed to be located. When removing the motor, be sure you mark where the wires are attached on the motor so that you wire it back up properly. Hope this helps!

Hoover on off switch won’t turn off. I have to unplug the vacuum to stop it. I have dismantled the handle and now I can’t get the inditation in the handle to fit over the little silver knob. I saw there was an on/off switch under the handle that is controlled by a piece of the handle.
#1 question for the manufacturer is why don’t they put the switch on the outside instead of having gimicks that turn it on and off… arghhhhhhhh
ANSWER : Don’t know what model you have, but sounds like you will need to replace the switch. As far as your question, you will have to contact the manufacture for an answer. We only provide solutions to your problem and a model number would have helped.

My Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright does not click to stay in an upright position. It works but the handle falls to the floor.
ANSWER : This is a common fault with the Dyson DC07 (and other Dysons) unfortunately the clip that holds the handle upright hs broken. It can be repaired, but will cost a reasonable amount to have done… I would just live with the problem and prop the vacuum cleaner against a wall when not in use.
